Assalamualaikum Wa Rahmatullahi Wa Barakatuh,
Planting trees are the most sustainable way to save the Earth. It aims to slow the connected
crises of climate change and biodiversity loss. Trees provide a lot of advantages to our daily
lives such as filtering the air, providing fresh drinking water, help control climate change,
remove carbon and create homes for thousands of species of flora and fauna. According to the
Global Forest Watch, tree loss in the most critical tropical areas has increased by 12 percent in
2020 as compared to the year before. This has accumulated 2.6 billion metric tons of carbon
dioxide or the equivalent of annual emissions from 570 million vehicles. An increasing demand
for housing and agricultural produce to fill the needs of a growing population are amongst the
cause of the issue. Therefore, tree planting initiative is a noble act and an efficient mitigation
step to combat climate change. As part of the Greening Malaysia programme, the 100 million
Tree-Planting Campaign 2021-2025 was launched which aims to conserve the country’s
biodiversity while improving the quality of the natural environment and rivers.
As a campus that takes the tagline of “Garden of Knowledge and Virtue”, IIUM regard trees as
part and parcel of the campus landscape in the context not only knowledge but also virtue. The
latter focuses on the human being in a metaphorical way to a “good tree” as mentioned in
Surah Ibrahim verses 24-27. The verses made mentioned of a human person that is well-rooted
as compared to one that is weakly rooted to the ground. The former is regarded as someone
who is upright and trustworthy as the khalifah or the vicegerent.
In conjunction to the above-mentioned matter, IIUM and Malaysian Timber Council (MTC) join
hands to empower our future leaders in the campus by organizing a tree planting event which
supports the efforts of environmental sustainability, conservation, and climate action. This
effort should be applauded and supported by various fraction of the IIUM community in the
campus and might be the steppingstone for future and impactful collaborations. Climate
change is real and the current rise in global average temperature are also fact-based. Let us
continue to play a role as a khalifah to conserve and preserve this 4.5 billion years old planet as
an Amanah given by Allāh Subhānahū wa Tacālā.
Once again, I thank MTC and the IIUM community for being a part of the sustainability agenda
in the campus to promote a better and environmental-friendly place of living to our future
generations. Let's lead the world with our Sejahtera way.

Assalamualaikum Wbt.
Brothers and Sisters,
Alhamdulillahi Rabbil ‘Alamin Wassalatu, Wassalamu ‘Ala-Asyarafil Anbiya’e Wal, Mursalin
Saidina Muhammadin Wa’ala Alih, Wasahbihi Ajma’in
I am truly happy and grateful that IIUM which is my alma matter has been able to conduct this
programme. The Tree planting program that we will perform today, will not only be good for the
environment but it also to educate the mankind to seeks Allah’s blessings and Rahmah.
In August, the Malaysian Timber Council (MTC) was awarded the “Government Council of the
Year Award for Excellence in Environmental Sustainability and CSR Initiatives”. This is the
second time that the Council has won this award.
When we give, we are displaying the grace of God and MTC’s involvement in Community
Farming, Tree Planting Programmes as well as the CSR projects allow us to show that we are
socially accountable to our stakeholders, and the public.
Community Farming is also in the spotlight. At the recent Malaysia International
Agricommodity Expo and Summit (MIACES) 2022 and with the Market Research Visit on
Community Farming to Indonesia, MTC is proud to play a crucial role in promoting this.
Community Farming and the Industrial Tree Plantation (ITP) will help the industry in addressing
raw material shortages while improving the livelihoods of communities involved in this project.
Insha’Allah, I will pray to finishing the year strong with the support and collaborations from all
of you.
“LET’S POWER PROGRESS TOGETHER!”
