The UK Food Information Amendment

Also known as ‘Natasha’s Law’

Governments across the UK have introduced new legislation which will require the packaging, or labels
of prepacked for direct sale (PPDS) food sold in England, Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland to
display the following information clearly:

• the name of the food; and
• a full ingredients list with the 14 allergens required to be declared by food law emphasised (in bold,

upper case, contrasting colours or underlined) on the ingredients list if present.

What is a PPDS food?
This is food that is packed before being o ered for sale, by the same food business, to the final
consumer on:

• the same site (which would include a building complex, such as a shopping centre or airport
terminal in which the same food business operates from more than one unit within the building
complex); or

• the same premises; or
• if the food is o ered for sale from moveable and/or temporary premises and the food is o ered for

sale by the same food business which packed it.

The Food Standard Agency’s (FSA) updated technical guidance seeks to clarify the definition of PPDS
(which currently has no legal definition in the EU or UK legislation). According to the technical guidance,
for a food to be PPDS, it must meet the following criteria:

1. Is the food presented in packaging?
2. Is it packaged before the consumer selects or orders it?
3. Is it packaged at the same place it is sold?

All three must be met in each case for food to be PPDS.

When will it come into e ect?
• 1 October 2021

Who does Natasha’s Law apply to?
• Businesses of all sizes including, but not limited to producers, manufacturers, packers, distributors,
wholesalers, retailers and caterers involved in prepacked and non-prepacked foods.

Single Use Carrier Bag Charge Increase (England)

Ready to Burn Scheme (England)

Requirements for Manufactured Solid Fuel & Wood Fuel

From May 2021, where wood is sold in volumes of under 2 cubic metres for burning in
domestic properties, and where authorised manufactured solid fuel is sold, all packaging must
include the approved logo, the supplier’s name and the unique certification number.

Guidelines

produced to support the change. The guidelines provide you with the necessary information
to ensure that all a ected products carry the correct logos. (A clear and distinctive identity for
the Ready to Burn Certification Logo has been established).

Suppliers have until 1st May 2022 to ensure all packaging if fully compliant. As long as retailers
display the supplier logo certification (see link below)
next to where the products are being sold, they will be
compliant with the regulations and be able to continue to
sell the products in the current packaging.
