We Honor
Veterans
A Program of Hospice of Northeast Georgia Medical Center
When Bob Kopp’s wife died from Alzheimer’s disease in 2013, he didn’t need
to ask her where she wanted to take her last breath. She lived in the same
home for most of her life, and it only seemed the most fitting and traditional
place.
“Her doctors recommended we put her in hospice care,” Kopp said. “She
was too far gone to talk about it … but I think that’s what she wanted.
Because of Hospice of Northeast Georgia Medical Center, we were able to
keep her home and take care of her.”
Kopp said he was so grateful to Hospice for allowing his wife the
opportunity to pass away peacefully at home with her family around her
that he decided to become a volunteer. Once he began volunteering,
he realized he was well-suited for one specific program in particular.
As a World War II veteran, Kopp was able to provide a special
touch to the We Honor Veterans program. Hospice of Northeast
Georgia Medical Center has been participating in the national
project, developed by the National Hospice and Palliative Care
Organization in collaboration with the Department of
Veterans Affairs, since 2011.
Hospice of Northeast Georgia Medical Center Manager Rhonda Rogers said the program Above: U.S. Army Veteran
“provides a way for hospices to begin to think more specifically about veterans, what their Bob Kopp
needs are at end of life, and to provide education and make changes to our programs so we
can better serve our veterans.” At Left: A certificate and hand-
made blanket are given to each
One of the first things care providers do is ask about a patient’s military experience. “For veteran during a special acknowl-
some patients, it’s a huge part of their lives. For others, it’s not,” Rogers said. “We don’t edgement ceremony.
make assumptions about that.”
For patients who are interested in the We Honor Veterans program, Hospice provides a
ceremony recognizing and thanking them for their service. They are also given a handmade
blanket and commemorative coin marked with military insignia.
“We sit with the patient, provide companionship and participate in a ceremony of ac-
knowledgement,” Rogers said. “We honor them verbally and with gifts.”
She credits the community’s many volunteers and donors for helping to provide for the
needs of veterans who have limited resources.
Hospice of Northeast Georgia Medical Center is part of a nonprofit, community health
system, which means it sees all patients regardless of their ability to pay. These ceremonies
for veterans are made possible only through our community’s generous donations to The
Medical Center Foundation.
But the program isn’t just a benefit to the patients. Families and friends of the patients
are often comforted by the recognition of their loved one’s military service. Rogers said vol-
unteers and staff who participate in the ceremonies
frequently come back feeling blessed by it as well.
Kopp, a U.S. Army vet, agreed. “It’s rare that vet-
erans are honored with parades and confetti,” he
said. “They just come back home and try to fit back
into their lives. I think this is important because
some of these people have never been recognized.
And before they leave this world, someone needs to
thank them and appreciate them.”
In addition to We Honor Veterans, there are
many programs and services offered that make
Hospice of Northeast Georgia Medical Center
unique. These programs are only possible through
the generous philanthropic support of our commu-
nity. For more information, contact Rhonda Rogers
at 770-219-8888.

blocks An educational display to share NGMC Braselton’s sustainable initiatives for better healing
and healthier living with the community was made possible through a signature gift to The
Medical Center Foundation by Jackson Electric Membership Corporation. It highlights the hospi-
tal’s journey to become Gold LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certified
and is located on the hospital’s ground floor main corridor adjacent to the education center.
The general public, school and civic groups, businesses and healthcare organizations alike are
invited to visit the philanthropy-funded display. Come learn what it means to be a good steward of
the environment and explore simple ways to bring green ideas into homes, schools, businesses
and the community. This unique educational tool provides an interesting and visually appealing
