Kamala Harris, Attorney General

Kamela Harris is a practicing political leader, a fighter for working men and wom-
en and a visionary – an all too unusual combination. At her swearing in ceremo-
ny after being elected California State Attorney General in 2010, Ms. Harris told
the gathered audience that “Every Californian matters,” and “that the law stands
for everyone.” Throughout her legal and political work, Attorney General Harris
has he remained faithful to those commitments.
During her tenure as California Attorney General, Ms. Harris has tackled some of
the most difficult questions confronting Californians. She has fought to reduce
chronic truancy among California’s elementary school students, pointing out that
our most vulnerable students face a lifelong learning disadvantage when denied
their constitutional right to an education.
Attorney General Harris has also launched a campaign to reduce the recidivism
rate for inmates who are caught up in our criminal justice system. She has cam-
paigned – against sometimes-fierce opposition – for preventative initiatives that
would keep people out of prison in the first instance, and help them break the
cycle of reoffending after release.
A fighter for fairness, Attorney General Harris has fought for sever economic and
criminal penalties for banks who violated the rights of homeowners by failing to
disclose critical data. When others were willing to acquiesce to smaller fines,
she refused to go along, thereby increasing the penalties for banking malfea-
sance exponentially.
Attorney General Harris has also fought for working people in California by beef-
ing up the underground economy unit in the Attorney General’s Office. That
office prosecutes unscrupulous employers who violate wage laws, misclassify
employees and subject their workers to unsafe working conditions.
Kamala Harris was born in Oakland, California and raised by her mother Shya-
mala Gopalan, a breast cancer specialist. She attended Howard University, the
oldest historically black college in the country, and then graduated from the Uni-
versity of California, Hastings College of Law. Harris has practiced as a court-
room prosecutor in the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office before moving
to the San Francisco District Attorney’s Office in 1998.
Harris was elected in 2010 as the first woman, the first African American and
the first South Asian to hold the office of Attorney General in the history of Cal-
ifornia. She was re-elected in 2014. Earlier this year, Attorney General Harris
announced that she was running to succeed Barbara Boxer as U.S. Senator from
California.
Attorney General Harris has asked us to “Remember our history,” so that we will
not forget the struggles that those who came before us have waged. She under-
stands that the first principle of a robust democracy is whether the law works for
everyone.
