จากคำบอกเล่าเดิมวัดหนองบัวตั้งอยู่ที่ริมหนองบัวซึ่งเป็นหนองน้ำประจำ
หมู่บ้าน ต่อมาได้มีการย้ายวัดมายังตำแหน่งปัจจุบัน วัดหนองบัวสันนิษฐาน
ว่าสร้างตั้งแต่ปี พ.ศ. 2405 โดยการนำของครูบาหลวงสุนันต๊ะร่วมกับชาว
บ้านหนองบัวสร้างวัดขึ้นมา
