Headteacher’s Letter As we draw to the end of another school term, I would like you all to join me and reflect on many of the achievements and activities that our students have taken part in. Highlighting a few, the start of term involved Year 9 students visiting the Olympic Park, they then had the opportunity to visit East Surrey and Reigate Colleges in preparation for their GCSE options next year. Year 11 students took part in the “Mock interview” process, where they sat with a member from our team of volunteers, who carried out a mock interview with every student. Many Year 11 students commented on how useful they found this as it helped prepare them for future college and job interviews. It was also pleasing to see our school ski trip happen this year with so many students having the opportunity to take part. It is lovely to see the planning and preparation already underway for next year’s trip. As always our annual Gym and Dance show proved to be a huge hit with so many students and children from our local primary schools. These are just a few of the highlights for this term, with many more theatre trips, competitions and information evenings happening. Of course, I could not write without acknowledging our recent SIAMS inspection, which we are extremely proud of. I would also like to express my gratitude and appreciation to students, staff and yourselves for the support and dedication given to the school. We take pride in the fact that when students attend The Priory School, they flourish, and this is from us working together as a community, enabling it to happen. This term we say goodbye to the following staff: Mrs Rose (PSHCE) Mr Meadows (Maternity cover for Science) Mrs Flanders (Art teacher) Mrs Hall (Study Centre Manager) Please join me in saying thank you to them for all their hard work and dedication to supporting students whilst they have been with us. Congratulations to the following staff: Miss Lister is teaching PSHCE from Monday 17 April and will be the new Form Tutor for 8A3. Mrs Bullen is our new Home School Link Worker and will continue to oversee internal interventions to support our students. Mrs Sterling will continue as our EAL coordinator but will also start her new role as the Study Centre Manager. We welcome Mrs Brown and Mrs Gokhale as new members of our community. Mrs Brown will teach RE and Art. Mrs Gokhale will be teaching Science. Have a peaceful Easter and I look forward to seeing everyone on Monday, 17th April. Dear parents and carers Mrs Trimnell Headteacher

Snow, Fun and Memories: Our Unforgettable School Ski Trip! After an early morning arrival to our home for the week, the Wiederkehr Jugendhotel, we were welcomed by our fantastic returning Club Europe Rep, Maria who joined the Ski team of Mr Loader, Mrs Brundish, Mr Sherringham, Mrs Freeman, Miss Parkins and Mr Larkin. The Saturday kicked off with collecting all our ski equipment and then once set up for skiing we relaxed with a Pizza lunch at the restaurant under the gondola. Mini-golf followed to get our sporting week underway. Sunday saw the first of our 6 sunny days of skiing and was our first meeting with our four fantastic ski instructors, Yvana, Natalia, Elleke and Johanna who were amazing with our students all week. Evening entertainments also added to the trip with curling on the Sunday, games night and swimming on Monday. Tuesday saw the famous ski trip quiz in the hotel’s sports hall. Wednesday was a particular highlight as we went to see the Zell am See Ice bears in action (EK Zeller Eisbären) for an all action ice hockey match where they came out on top 4-2. Thursday, as is Priory tradition, was fancy dress ski day with the theme of Movies and also the race day! Students took to the slalom course to try to set the fastest time. The overall winner was Dan Head but it was amazing to see the progress of all of the students throughout the week. This was recognised at the awards ceremony that night where the ski instructors and teachers gave out their awards. Friday saw the last day of skiing and an outing to the Wasserwelt swimming pool for a swim, slide and relax before dinner and our journey home. Many thanks to all the students, staff, ski instructors, ski rep and of course our two amazing coach drivers Dean and David. Mr Loader

The Priory Gym and Dance Show is always an eagerly anticipated event in the school calendar, and this year's show did not disappoint. With a theme of 'The Queen's Reign,' students showcased their talent to sold-out crowds on the 7th and the 8th February, as well as a matinee performance for local primary school. The show featured a variety of dance styles. The students also displayed their vocal talents, with year 11 student Bella delivering a stunning rendition of 'Defying Gravity' from the hit musical 'Wicked.' The energy and enthusiasm of the performers were infectious, and the audience was captivated from start to finish. The show was a true testament to the hard work and dedication of the students, as well as the tireless efforts of the show's organisers, Mrs Harrison and Mrs Hastings-Holland. The Gym and Dance Show provides an excellent opportunity for students to showcase their talents and to gain valuable performance experience. It is also a fantastic way for the school community to come together and celebrate the achievements of its students. The success of this year's show is a testament to the talent and hard work of the students and staff at The Priory. Congratulations to all involved in putting on such a spectacular event! 8 Year 8 celebrating Fairtrade Fortnight 2023 During Fairtrade Fortnight, Year 8 students were given a challenge to design a project containing Fairtrade products as part of their studies around poverty. The challenge sparked creativity and inspired students to come up with innovative ideas. They had gained an understanding of the importance of fairtrade in alleviating poverty and promoting sustainability. We certainly seem to have some ethical entrepreneurs in The Priory! Innovative Fairtrade Projects: Year 8 Students Rise to the Challenge Mr Harrington

Year 9 visit the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park Year 9 students were given the opportunity to visit the Olympic Park in January as part of their study of urban inequality an regeneration. It was the first time the trip has been able to run since 2020, so there was much excitement. The group assembled outside the Copper Box Arena, before walking through to the London Stadium and Aquatics Centre. Primary data was collected looking at the environmental quality, before heading in to Westfield Stratford City to see how the shopping centre has been designed to compliment the regeneration of this part of East London. Callum Brennand said 'It was a really enjoyable day’. Mr Harrington

Priory students make the most of our college partnerships Reigate and East Surrey College are like our 'off-site' sixth form. This year they have continued to provide a range of opportunities that our students have been taking full advantage of. Back in January, our Year 9 students arrived in school ready for their trip to Reigate and East Surrey College to have a look at the wide range of opportunities offered by our partner colleges. Unfortunately, a mistake by the coach company meant that it was a disappointed group of students who headed off to period 2 having been told the trip had been postponed. They had to wait until March 1st to eventually be given the chance to make the trip. There is much for Year 9 to consider at this time and to help them make good GCSE choices this visit is invaluable. Reigate College and East Surrey College kindly rearranged the day for us, providing tours of their sites and presentations on the different kinds of courses they offer. They also spoke to our students about the need for hard work, dedication and progress throughout Key Stage 4 and how this can impact on their future choices. At ESC, the students had a presentation on apprenticeships, (something that many of them had not explored before), got to see their impressive motor-vehicle, construction, plumbing, science, art and fashion facilities and had the opportunity to look at the vocational pathways the college offers. At Reigate, they were again treated to a tour of the campus, had a presentation from the vice-principal on A level and BTEC courses, a discussion on applications and explored how our likes and dislikes can impact on our motivation and progress. Both colleges were very complimentary of the behaviour of our students and many students asked important questions about how they can maximise their opportunities in the future. In June we will welcome representatives from the colleges to talk to our Year 10 students before they too get a chance to visit the colleges for taster sessions in subjects they are interested in applying for. In addition to these whole year group initiatives, our students continue to benefit from a range of masterclasses. Back in December some of our best Year 9 Mathematicians attended a masterclass and our top performing Year 8 and Year 10 students were invited to investigate the possibility of a career in medicine, dentistry or veterinary science. Not to be left out, Year 11 students with the highest academic profiles attended a session on the potential of making an application to Oxford or Cambridge in the future. As ever we are truly thankful to our partner colleges for investing their time in our students' future and living out our values of Community, Wisdom and Hope. Mr Harrison

"You're Hired!" Year 11s step up for interview practice. On Friday 10th February we welcomed over 40 volunteers on site to deliver our Year 11 Mock Interview day. Volunteers came from a variety of sources including local businesses, parents, school governors and the Rotary club. Each individual gave up their day to provide every Year 11 student with the chance to practise their interview skills and techniques in a safe environment. Year 11 began this build up before Christmas in their PSHCE lessons and tutor times. They have been creating and refining CVs as well as discussing positive interview skills such as eye contact and body language. In addition, Year 11 were encouraged to consider ‘typical’ interview questions around themes such as independence, problem solving and teamwork. Teachers and tutors led discussions on how students would be able to demonstrate their skills by using real life examples from school, Duke of Edinburgh, extra-curricular activities and their hobbies. On the day, each student met with one of our volunteers who, where possible, had been matched to the student in terms of possible career ambitions. The volunteer led a 20 minute interview with the student before offering verbal feedback on their answers and performance. In addition, each volunteer provided a written feedback sheet to be returned to the student so they had a reminder of their strengths and areas for improvement. We have had some amazing feedback from our volunteers, students and even some parents about the whole day. Parent ‘Thank you to all involved for the recent mock interviews. Our son gained so much from that experience and came away with some valuable and positive feedback.’ Students ‘It's good practice, and interviewers who have the same career that you’d like to do in future can help with apprentices.’ ‘You can overcome any worries with real interviews and it's good practice, especially for people who are usually more on the quieter, shy side. It pushed me out of my comfort zone and boosted my confidence to realise that it wasn't as bad as I had expected. I feel prepared and more confident for real interviews in the future.’ Volunteers ‘I thoroughly enjoyed the 2 interviews I did. They were both excellent, confident, well presented and we had a good conversation.’ ‘Was great seeing so many local businesses supporting the day.’ ‘I thoroughly enjoyed coming back to my old school to help out in such a positive way. It was really well organised and the children I met were so polite.’ Catherine Young, Independent Careers advisor at the Priory School.

This year we celebrated British Science Week from March 13th-20th with the theme ‘Connections. Science Week 2023 ‘Connections’ All students in year 7-9 completed a poster on this theme. We received a huge range of ideas on this topic. From Genetics to Space; from the World Wide Web to the Wood Wide Web (the underground connections between trees); from the Human Body to Technology, from Human Impact to Quantum Entanglement, to name just a few. The quality and creativity was of a very high standard. To judge the poster competition we had two STEM ambassadors supported by 4 year 10 students. There were some tough decisions but the top 5 were finally identified, chosen for their creativity, presentation and the detail included within the poster. There were many that were also highly commended for the thought, time and effort that was put into completing this work. The winning posters are now displayed in the Science Corridor. Below are the 5 winners the STEM ambassadors selected. Nicole Barnes 8B1 Daisy Beavon 9A2 Kaitlyn Crispin 8A2 Betsy James 8A3 Poster Competition Tilly Barnes 8B2 Mr Ironmonger

A big thank you to everyone who handed in a poster. A massive Thank you to our two STEM ambassadors; Linderlee Ross from UK Power Networks and Andy Higgins from CampbellReith. Both gave up their own time, voluntarily, to support us with judging the posters and with supporting the year 7 event. Year 7 Spaghetti Towers The year 7s were set the challenge of connecting spaghetti and marshmallows to build the tallest structure that they could. It was great to see some interesting plans and then some ingenuity with problem solving as issues arose. The tallest tower recorded was at 79cm by a team in 7A1. Well done to other groups who perservered despite being less successful. Year 8 Bridges The year 8s investigated connections by building bridges with limited paper and sellotape. The initial challenge was that a toy car had to cross a 20cm gap. There were additional challenges of raising the base off the ground level and to make the strongest bridge possible. Other activities During the week there were other opportunities with experiments, a quiz, looking at STEM careers and other amazing ‘Connections’ including the London ‘Super Sewer’. This is an amazing project that is nearly complete, 16 miles of tunnels below London to ensure processing of waste and making the Thames a cleaner river. Mr Ironmonger

STEM in the PARK Taking place in the Memorial Gardens, Crawley Saturday 20th May from 11am to 4pm STEM in the Park is a FREE family fun packed day of STEM activities which include a pop-up planetarium, interactive engineering rigs, drones to fly, a solar powered car to explore and much more. 16 Battle of the Brains: Ben’s triumph in the Chess Final Year 11 Raise Over £70 with Valentine Rose Grams Fundraiser for Prom On the 10th February, our Year 11 students organised a Valentine Rose Grams fundraiser to raise money for their upcoming Prom. For just £1, students were able to purchase a beautiful red rose with a personalised message to be delivered to their friend. The response from the school community was incredible, inn just a few days, they were able to raise over £70 towards their Prom! Well done Year 11! We had an exhilarating final match in our chess tournament between two of the best players, Ben and Harvey. It was an intense game of strategy and skill, but in the end, it was Ben who emerged as the winner. Congratulations to Ben for taking home the grand prize of a £25 Amazon voucher and having his name etched onto our prestigious chess tournament trophy. A big shoutout to Harvey for winning a £15 voucher as a runner-up. Thanks to Daniel who organised and ran the tournament as part of his DofE award and to everyone who participated.

The Priory Food Technology department has been successful in gaining funding from the Savoy educational trust. This generous donation made it possible for us to buy 12 new ovens in the food technology room and one state of the art combination Convotherm Maxx oven. These new resources are a valuable addition to school and provide students studying Hospitality and Catering a useful insight into the use of different equipment used by the trade. Having the new equipment provided Ronnie and other students with a good platform to enter Springboard competitions. The ovens are also heavily used by key stage 3 and 4 students during daily lessons and also for the after school cookery club which has been an incredible success and is well supported as well. we are very fortunate to have been given this funding by the Savoy educational Trust and would always welcome any generous funding for future equipment for the Food Technology department. 18 Meeting Author Helen Rutter: Students Create Their Own Stories We had a special guest visit in February: author Helen Rutter! Excitement was in the air as Year 7 awaited the arrival of the author of the best-selling book, "The Boy Who Made Everyone Laugh" and the sequel, "The Funniest Boy in the World". Helen spoke about the characters in her books and how she came up with them. Then it was time for the fun to begin! Students were tasked with creating their own story, and with Helen's guidance, they let their imaginations run wild. They created characters, settings, and plot twists that left us all in stitches. It was an interactive session that encouraged creativity and storytelling. Thank you Helen for visiting our school and inspiring our students to embrace their creativity and imagination. Congratulations to Matthew Y8, for achieving the Priory Silver Literary Canon Award! Our literary canon programme is designed to challenge and inspire students to read a range of books from classics to contemporary literature, and to promote inclusivity and diversity. At the Priory School we believe that reading opens doors to new worlds, ideas and perspectives. We look forward to seeing Matthew continue to thrive in his literary journey. Canon loyalty cards are available from the Study Centre. To achieve this award, Matthew has read the following books: • Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins • A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L'Engle • Norhtern Lights by Philip Pullman • The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis • The Owl Service by Alan Garner Matthew Y8 Achieves Silver Literary Canon Award Ms Browne

Celebrating World Book Day In celebration of the school’s Priory Canon initiative and to encourage students to read more, Mrs. Hall, Study Centre Manager made cupcakes with edible book covers, which were given to students who could talk about one of the displayed books. It proved to be a popular challenge and was enjoyed by all. The event was a fun and engaging way for students to celebrate their love for books and reading, while also encouraging them to explore new titles and authors. Students were also invited to bring in their own homemade cakes, decorated to depict a book or a book character. The entries were judged on their creativity and originality, with Year 9 students Sophie, Millie, and Annabel taking the top prize for their stunning cake based on A.F. Steadman's "Skandar and the Unicorn Thief". Runner up was Brooke Boundy With a simple but very effective ‘The Hungry Caterpillar’ book cake. Ms Browne

If you’ve been enjoying the delicious food at the school recently, there’s a good reason for it. Independent Catering is proud to introduce new Catering Manager, Marlene Makinson, who has been working hard to create tasty and nutritious meals for the students and staff. Marlene has only lived in the UK for 6 months, moving from South Africa and now lives in Dorking. Her extensive experience in the hospitality industry, including 25 years as a professional chef in hotels and restaurants, has helped to elevate the quality of the school’s meals. Marlene loves working as part of a team and makes a mean curry, her favourite meal! Having only lived in the UK for a short time she says there are some things she need to get used to that are quite different to home; people’s accents, the weather and roads to name a few!! Marlene commented ’What I love since joining Independent Catering at Priory School are working with the team and producing tasty, healthy meals for the students and staff and I look forward to seeing them try my food every day.’ Whether you’re a student or a staff member, you can expect to enjoy tasty and healthy meals every day. Introducing Marlene: The New Catering Manager My name is Jemimah Taylor, I’m a year 9 student and I’m doing my bronze DofE. I’m really loving it especially the volunteering section. I am volunteering at Rainbows in my village. It is really fun because I get to help younger children start their girl guiding journey. I have been working on my leadership skills, helping others and my communication skills. I haven’t finished the 3 months yet which is good because I love going there every week. I would really recommend doing DofE as it is great fun, good to try something new and a great challenge. A Year 9 Student’s Perspective on Volunteering for DofE
