Testing for nickel

Nickel is a metal used to improve the hardness of alloys, particularly associated with a bright
metal finish. Nickel sensitivity when in contact with the skin may lead to allergic reactions
(nickel dermatitis). These reactions can be severe and distressing to the person wearing the
product. REACH compliance is required on all metal components that may have prolonged
contact with the skin.

Testing for heavy metals

Lead and its components are toxic, they accumulate in living organisms and are harmful to
human and animal health. Lead is used to increase hardness in items such as beads, trims, etc
and also in coatings.
Cadmium is a known carcinogenic (causing cancer), also can cause genetic defects and is toxic if
ingested. Cadmium is a metal used to stabilise plastics, used to colour products and used in
coatings when laminating products such as fabrics.

Testing for phthalates

Phthalates are a known carcinogenic (causing cancer), also effect metabolic, growth and disrupt
development. They have a toxic effect on reproductive systems, with specific concern for infants
where products can be placed in the mouth.
They are found in flexible plastics used in vinyl, polyvinylchloride (PVC), polyurethane (PU) and a
mix of both.
