DOMESTIC OVEN GLOVES
FORTHCOMING CHANGE

PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT (PPE)

Under the forthcoming change to the PPE Directive
(which will be an EU Regulation), domestic oven gloves will come
within the scope of the PPE Regulation from 21st April 2018.

Oven gloves will be Category II PPE, meaning that EU type
examination via a Notified Body will be required.

There has been a British Standard for many years – BS 6526.

There is currently no EU standard that specifically addresses
domestic oven gloves.

There is a need to create an EU standard, or amend an existing EU
standard, to include such gloves.

EN 407 (using the test method described in EN 702) is an EU standard for “Protective gloves
against thermal risks (heat and/or fire)”, but does not really address domestic oven gloves as it
is believed that this standard was intended more for industrial heat protective gloves.
There have been meetings of the applicable CEN Working Group and it is understood that a
revision of EN 407 to include specific oven glove related clauses is going ahead. The group are
fully aware of the need to do this as soon as possible. EN 407 currently has a number of
different performance levels associated with each test to ensure that it is suitable for a variety
of applications.
The (contact heat) test method for heat protective gloves usually involves placing the glove
material against a heated metal block for a specified time and measuring the temperature
transmitted through the glove material. Standards for heat protection usually specify block
temperatures, contact times and maximum permitted temperature rises, depending upon the
desired performance requirement.
When a manufacturer has obtained a test report or other documentation to demonstrate
compliance with the appropriate PPE requirements, the complete documentation for the oven
gloves will need to be submitted to a Notified Body for approval and issue of a formal EU type
examination certificate.
