12 August 2023 S ay it isn’t so! How is it August already? This summer is just flying by! We hope you are enjoying every minute of it! And from the looks of it, you are! Last month was a busy one, and in case you missed out on any of the fun, we have it all covered for you in this month’s issue. We look back on Blue Seas Med Spa Grand Opening, our Hard Hat Happy Hour at Park & Oak Collected, all of the local 4th of July Festivities and so much more! We get a glimpse of the pawsome life of Mavis and Tate, our Precious Pets this month, and are inspired by not one but two dancers. Moyra Gorski, a trained nurse, a successful entrepreneur with her own podcast and wellness business, as well as an author, said anyone of any age can get started in dance, alone or with a partner. And she is having a blast doing it. And Glenbard West rising senior Anne Crum, who dances competitively and for fun, reminds us that at the end of the day, each dancer has unique strengths, and it’s important to celebrate those strengths in order to really enjoy dance. As we approach the start of another school year, we receive great advice from Heidi King, who is taking over Ford Wealth Managements’ pages, about all of the changes this year has brought to the college planning process. From admission trends to substantial changes to the FAFSA and college financial aid, this article has all you need to knowboth the good and the bad. Glen Ellyn Mom’s Village features a sweet tale of a local mom following her passions. Local resident and mother, Lisa Matus, started watching videos on social media of elaborate cotton candy designs during COVID. Cotton candy had always been her favorite treat since she was a little girl, and after purchasing a small cotton candy maker, it wasn’t long before she officially launched “Swirl Chicago”! And Amelia Angel gives a tasty review of The Desi Accent, an Indian restaurant on Butterfield Rd in Lombard. Learn more about this authentic spot, and the many traditional Indian food items she sampled, from a Masala Lassi drink that was “a little spicy” to the Gulab Jamun dessert that was “very, very sweet and delicious.” Finally, we have two new Junior resident writers to introduce to you: Matilda McLaren who gives us the inside scoop on the Summer Program for the Glen Ellyn Children’s Resource Center, and Haley Wong who reexamines the Hero in her review of Across The Spider-Verse. These stories and so many more are just waiting for you to Stroll through! We hope you enjoy this month’s issue as much as we enjoyed putting it together with you and for you! 16 August 2023 THE SHOGER’S THE SHOGER’S Family Values

Stroll Glen Ellyn 17 E ach day is a delicate balancing act in the Shoger household. “We have a lot of continuous communication which involves shared and synced calendars, texts throughout the day and a weekly meal plan to keep things afloat,” says Wilhelmina. Owen and Wilhelmina met during welcome week of their freshman year at the University of Michigan. They settled in the Chicagoland area after they graduated where Wilhelmina attended graduate school and Owen worked for Exelon at the Dresden Nuclear Power Plant. Wilhelmina completed her Ph.D. and started her career as a clinical psychologist specializing in working with eating disorders, depression, and anxiety. She has her own practice, ‘A Better Tomorrow: Behavioral Health Care Center’, in Oak Brook. Owen and Wilhelmina moved to Glen Ellyn in 2014 looking for a town they could put down roots. “We loved that it had mature trees, an established downtown with cute shops and restaurants, and had a friendly, small-town feel while still being a quick Metra ride into the city.” Wilhelmina and Owen have two children who attend Ben Franklin Elementary. Madeline, 10, is a Girl Scout, loves cats, singing, and anything crafty. Griffin, 8, is a Cub Scout, plays the piano, is an avid Lego builder, and has recently become a voracious reader, devouring books before he falls asleep at night. Before having kids, Owen and Wilhelmina had an idea of what they wanted for their family. Owen wanted to be an involved dad, spending plenty of time at home and being able to seamlessly co-parent during the kid’s evening routines and bedtime. Wilhelmina, an only child and raised by a single mother, yearned for the chaos of being the house where friends and family would gather and desired an equal partner in the household; someone who supported her career as a psychologist and as the primary planner and organizer for the family. Wilhelmina explained, “it’s about staying connected with our core family and personal values and using those to guide our decisions. Owen and I think it’s important for our kids to have unstructured downtime so we try

When she feels overwhelmed, Wilhelmina said she reminds herself to slow down, take a pause and check-in with herself. Wilhelmina often returns to a talk Anne-Marie Slaughter gave a few years ago. Slaughter had expressed regret around an article she had reviously publised stating how women can have it all, as she now felt that was unrealistic. Slaughter simply sated that “no one can have it all.” This has become a mantra Wilhelmina uses as her touchstone. There will always be a sacrifice, time at work or time with famiy. At any given moent I can only pick one area to direct my attention, and that thought alone can steady me,” ilhelmina said. Balance sounds like a calm word, but in practice it is an active process for the Shoger’s involving good communication, staying true to their shaed vision and desires for family life, and learning to say no, which Wilhelmina jokes is the hardest for her to put into practice. fifffflffiflffi ffffffffifl fflffflffffff fifffflffifl fflfl ffl fffflff

Wilhelmina is an avid reader and is involved in two book clubs, one of which is her own. She said, “I named my club ‘Ladies of Literati’ which I shorten to LOL. I’ve been doing the group for several years now.” Wilhelmina and Owen are also movie buffs and host an annual Oscar Party as well as a horror movie fest in October. Last year, Wilhelmina, decided to take the leap to expand her practice. “It was always the plan but first it was building up my own caseload, then I had my children and was in the hazy newborn years, and then the pandemic hit. Finally, the world around me settled down, Maddie and Griffin were in school full-time and I thought, maybe now is the time.” Wilhelmina explained how she wanted to build a practice that was different from the many she had witnessed and interacted with over the years. “I didn’t want a giant practice with 20-30 clinicians and no one really knows anyone. I wanted to stay small, with quality practitioners. I wanted my practice to be connected to the community and a name people could trust. In addition, I wanted to give each of my employees the kind of environment that I wanted to work at including a flexible and accommodating scheduling, an emphasis on work-life balance, and a warm, family-like work place that one could feel when walking in the door.” Wilhelmina has a very clear picture but reports the execution has been more difficult. “I have two fabulous people on staff now and am so lucky because they are amazing. But I need additional clinicians, especially someone who can work with eating disorders. It has been more difficult to find someone who fits with my vision than I had anticipated.” “I think the most difficult part of expanding has been continuing to be true to my values. My family values and my business values, which means I feel like one of my spinning plates is always a bit wobbly,” laughs Wilhelmina. When she feels overwhelmed, Wilhelmina said she reminds herself to slow down, take a pause and check-in with herself. Wilhelmina often returns to a talk Anne-Marie Slaughter gave a few years ago. Slaughter had expressed regret around an article she had previously published stating how women can have it all, as she now felt that was unrealistic. 20 August 2023 BY HARTLEY CAVADA The Pawsome Life of Mavis and Tater PRECIOUS PETS Hi, this is Mavis and Tater here, to tell you a little bit about our pawsome life! Since I’m the oldest (2 ½ years old), I’ll go first. My full name is Mavis Mary. They think I am a Terrier/Dachshund mix. My family rescued me when I was 12 weeks old. They got me from a rescue in Chicago called Felines and Canines. I was one of three puppies that my family could choose from. They almost picked my brother, but luckily for me, the rescue told them I would be better for a family with kids. I’m so lucky because I have two human siblings. I have a brother Jack and a sister Ava. They are so good to me! I can jump really high! I love to jump up to give my family and friends kisses. The only problem is that sometimes people aren’t expecting my jumps and they get a little startled! I’m like a little kangaroo full of love! I love to go to the dog park and I love to be chased. My human mom has a really sweet nickname for me. She calls me Mavy, Wavy, Baby! I love when she does that! Last summer things got really exciting around our house. My human sister, Ava, has a friend who lives across the street from a wonderful lady, Betty. Betty helps with the ARF Animal Rescue. She was fostering a sweet little mama dog and her entire litter of puppies! Ava and her friends would visit the puppies all the time. Ava told her mom about the puppies and asked her to come see them. They fell in love with a sweet little puppy. At first everyone was calling the puppy Big Potato (he was a little chubby), then Potato, and finally Tater Tot. That’s how I ended up with a furry little brother. Hi, I’m Tater Tot. I just turned 1. Like my furry sister, Mavis mentioned, I’m the baby in the family. I was adopted when I was 8 weeks old. I’m a Miniature Pincher/Chihuahua mix. I came into the world in a very exciting way. My furry mom had been rescued and Mavis and Tater

Stroll Glen Ellyn 21 was being transported from Kentucky to Illinois. She went into labor in the truck and delivered me and my other furry siblings along the way! She was so brave and birthed us in a dark covered crate to protect us from the other dogs being transported. I’m very active and Mavis and I love to be outside! One of my favorite things to do is hunt in my yard for frogs, turtles, and chipmunks! You never know what you might find. I did some training at Wolf Beach when I was a puppy. I’m not really into to doing tricks though. There is one thing I do that is pretty naughty and really upsets my family. I eat all the T.V. remote controls. I’m not sure why I do it? They don’t taste good, I just love the way they feel on my teeth. I’ve really got to work on stopping that though. Even though I’m the littlest in the family, I’m pretty much in charge. Mavis is very patient with me. Mavis is actually my hero! She saved my life. Just a couple of weeks ago, I was hunting in my backyard and I wasn’t paying attention. My big sister, Mavis, spotted a coyote that was about to attack me! She started barking hysterically so that my mom would hear. She knew it wasn’t Mavis’ normal bark. My mom ran out and screamed at the coyote. Thankfully, he ran away and I wasn’t his little snack! I mean I know my name is Tater Tot, but I don’t want a coyote to eat me!! One of our favorite things in the whole world is when we get bacon for a treat! What dog doesn’t love bacon? Tater and I feel very differently about the car though. I love to go for car rides. Nothing beats the wind blowing through my fur! Tater on the other hand, hates car rides. He gets car sick every time. He has since he was a puppy. He only goes in the car when it is absolutely necessary. We both are very lucky to be part of an amazing family who loves us very much! Thanks goodness the Egan’s rescued us both and we have our furever family! Ford, CFP®, AIF® Financial Advisor INDEPENDENCE · INTEGRITY · INSIGHT Ford Wealth Management LLC Our mission is you. BY HEIDI KING, COLLEGE INSIDE TRACK NEED TO KNOW CHANGES TO THE COLLEGE PROCESS As we approach another school year, this month I am turning my space in Stroll Glen Ellyn over to an expert in the college planning process, local resident Heidi King. For anyone approaching the college choice or admissions process, I highly recommend reaching out to Heidi and College Inside Track. – ERIK FORD Harvard’s acceptance rate fell from 5.0% to 3.2%, Northwestern’s fell from 9.0% to 7.0% and Notre Dame’s fell from 19.0% to 12.9%. This same trend is now happening at public flagship universities such as the University of Illinois UrbanaChampaign and the University of Wisconsin-Madison, especially in more competitive majors such as business and engineering. Students who would have been accepted five or ten years ago are now routinely denied due to stronger applicant pools. GPAs are on the rise. According to the College Board, 60% of college applicants in the class of 2021 had a 4.0 out of 4.0 or better. In 1990, the average GPA of high school students was 2.59; today it is 3.0. It is increasingly difficult for students to stand out on raw data like grades and test scores, so how they communicate their unique selves through the college essay, passion projects and other application supplements, has never been more important. TESTING The pandemic rapidly accelerated the trend of colleges not requiring test scores for admission, and now over 90% of colleges are test optional in some form. However, test scores remain trusted data points as GPAs rise, and a competitive test score – which varies based on the specific school you are applying to – can be an asset in the admissions process. Colleges who do not require a test score for admission may still use test scores when awarding merit scholarships. As the process has become more complex, families now have more strategic decisions to make: Whether to test at all, how many times, whether to submit the score and to which colleges. Test anxiety and test fatigue are meaningful issues for students and should be considered in the full context of everything else a student has going. COLLEGE FINANCIAL AID Both SECURE Acts introduce significant changes to the college financial aid process in 2023 that will require new planning strategies for both parents and grandparents. There are new rules this year relating to state sponsored 529 plans and other college contributions, how multiple students in college are treated, financial aid for divorced families and more. Certain middle- and T his past year has resulted in some of the most significant changes to the college planning process in decades. Admission trends have changed how colleges admit students, including schools going test optional, although not necessarily when they award scholarships. There are also substantial changes to the FAFSA and college financial aid that may make college more expensive for middle class and affluent families. However, this latter issue may also open up attractive financial planning opportunities. ADMISSION TRENDS Applications to more selective colleges are soaring, causing admission rates at these schools to drop from what were already low percentages. From 2020 to 2022, upper-income families will qualify for less financial aid as a result and may need to plan accordingly. First, the good news. State sponsored 529 account balances owned by grandparents or other non-nuclear family members such as aunts and uncles no longer negatively impact a student’s ability to qualify for need-based financial aid. A 529 plan is a state sponsored savings vehicle that offers tax-free earnings for college savers, provided the funds are withdrawn for “qualified” educational expenses. Previously, there had been minimal workarounds for money not used in the event the child does not go to college or does not use the full amount of their 529 accounts. This new legislation provides greater flexibility for these accounts in both what qualifies for an educational expense and how unused balances may be used. For example, beginning in 2024 unused 529 plan funds can be rolled over into Roth IRAs tax and penalty free, subject to limitations. Unfortunately, there are a handful of changes that are less favorable for middle- and upper-income families. Families with multiple students in college concurrently will no longer be able to divide the amount the FAFSA says they are expected to contribute toward college among those students, dramatically reducing the amount of need-based financial aid they may qualify for. Small business owners with less than 100 employees, including family farms, are no longer exempt from reporting their net worth as an asset on the FAFSA. Depending on the value of the business, this could significantly reduce the ability of certain families to qualify for need-based financial aid. Finally, many divorced families will be paying more for college. Previously, the parent with whom the student lived with the majority of the time completed the FAFSA. Now, the parent who provides the majority of financial support completes it. 24 August 2023 ATHLETE OF THE MONTH This month’s Athlete of the Month is Glenbard West rising senior Anne Crum. Having danced for over a decade now, Anne now reflects on her past memories and future goals in the sport. Let’s hear more from her in this Q&A! WHEN DID YOU FIRST START DOING DANCE/WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR EARLIEST MEMORIES OF YOU DOING THE SPORT? I started dancing at three years old in a class with my older sister, Mary, who is also a dancer! When Sunshine Dance opened in 2011, I began taking more dance classes- mostly in the styles of jazz and hip hop- with friends from school. I absolutely loved the teachers, other students, and studio culture, which were three main reasons I enthusiastically joined the competition team in the fall of 2014. WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT DANCE? For one, I love the relationships I have created with friends and mentors throughout my time as a dancer. I also greatly enjoy any opportunity to perform as a dancerwhether it be in the studio, on camera, or on stage. Connecting with the audience and other dancers this way is extraordinarily special, as it both demonstrates endless hours of hard work paying off and creates a space to have fun with those around me. WHAT IS DANCE LIKE AT SUNSHINE? WHAT IS THE DYNAMIC OF PRACTICES LIKE? As a senior member of the Sunshine Dance Company, I take weekly classes in ballet, tap, technique, contemporary, and jazz. I also compete solo and group routines throughout the season, so rehearsals for those typically also occur once a week. Each class and rehearsal during the week focuses on a different aspect of dance, but it is expected that every class be used as an opportunity to grow ourselves as individual dancers and a team. What I love about Sunshine is the perfect balance between cultivating strong dancers through structured practice and having the ability to let loose and just enjoy dancing with friends surrounding me. WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR MAJOR ACCOMPLISHMENTS/ AWARDS IN THE SPORT? One of my greatest accomplishments in dance thus far was winning a spot on the Dupree Dance Collective in the summer of 2021, which I am still a part of today. This opportunity has allowed me to travel the US as a dance convention assistant and connect with some truly inspiring dancers and choreographers from around the country. Additionally, this past year I had the privilege of choreographing Glenbard West’s 2023 production of CHICAGO, which was not only enriching in a creative sense, but brought me closer with my community and others involved in the Glen Ellyn arts. WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR FAVORITE MEMORY WITH DANCE? My favorite dance memory was attending nationals in Wisconsin with my entire team last summer! I, along with many teammates my age, stayed in a house together and spent a week taking dance classes, competing, and hanging out by the pool. Not only was it a great bonding experience before many of my close friends graduated, but we also did well in competition and learned a lot by taking classes from a talented and inspiring faculty. WHAT DO YOU DO IN YOUR FREE TIME WHEN YOU ARE NOT DOING SPORTS? WHAT DOES A TYPICAL WEEKEND LOOK LIKE FOR YOU? When not dancing, I really just enjoy spending time with friends, family, and my dog, Gloria. Aside from completing school work or dancing, I enjoy eating out with friends, going for walks, watching new TV shows, or baking on my free weekends! Dancing Queen Anne Crum BY ELLA CHAMPAGNE

Stroll Glen Ellyn 25 HOW HAVE YOUR FAMILY/FRIENDS SUPPORTED YOU THROUGHOUT THE SPORT? My family is extremely supportive of dance! My older sister, Mary, is also a dancer and currently studies dance at Chapman University in California, so she completely understands everything that goes into the sport and supports me, whether virtually or in person, at every performance. My mom, dad, and younger sister, Maggie, have also been immensely supportive of competitive dance over the years, and I certainly would not be where I am today without their ceaseless financial and moral support. Needless to say, I am incredibly thankful for the support from my entire family when it comes to dance. DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE DANCE COACH FROM YOUR YEARS DOING THE SPORT? WHY IS THAT COACH SO SPECIAL? I have had the honor of learning from numerous dance coaches over the years, but I really don’t think I could pick one as my favorite. Having been at Sunshine Dance for nearly twelve years, I have worked with almost every staff member at one point or another, and I am so grateful for all they have done for me as a dancer and person. Through teaching me in class, setting choreography on me, and/or giving me the opportunity to teach and choreograph in the community, I am eternally grateful for the support each teacher has shown me and all I have learned from them! WHAT ARE YOU MOST EXCITED ABOUT FOR SENIOR YEAR? From a dance perspective, I am super excited to start working on my competition dance pieces, teach dance at my studio, and choreograph Glenbard West’s fall 2023 musical. I also just look forward to spending one more year with my amazing friends at school- many of whom I’ve known since kindergarten! DO YOU HAVE IDEAS ON WHAT YOU WANT TO DO AS A CAREER AFTER COLLEGE? After college, I would love to continue dancing. One of my favorite styles of dance is musical theater, so it would definitely be cool to one day dance in a touring musical or on Broadway. Further down, I can also see myself going to law school and possibly having a legal career after working as a professional dancer for a while. WHAT IS ONE THING YOU WANT TO ACCOMPLISH IN THE FUTURE (IT COULD BE IN THE SPORT OR JUST SOMETHING GENERALLY)? Although I have many goals for dance, I would also love to become fluent in both Spanish and French at some point in the future. I have taken Spanish at school for five years and always look forward to the class, so I would like to continue that in addition to learning French. This way, I can travel and communicate with so many more people around the world! WHAT HAS BEEN THE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE YOU HAVE RECEIVED FROM A DANCE COACH ABOUT THE SPORT OR LIFE IN GENERAL + WHY WAS THAT ADVICE SO IMPACTFUL TO YOU? As I got older and started competing in dance more seriously, I began to experience more rejection and loss. A coach then told me that a “no” is sometimes just a “not now”, meaning just because I might not have made it through a whole audition or scored in a top ten doesn’t mean I never will. This advice propelled me to continue working hard and celebrate any smaller, more frequent victories. Soon enough, I found myself dancing more for enjoyment and achieving bigger dance goals I once thought were unattainable. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU SHARE WITH YOUNG ATHLETES INTERESTED IN DANCING? Without a doubt, dance is a sport where comparison is easy to experience. As a young dancer, I often compared myself to others and became frustrated if I couldn’t do as many turns, demonstrate as many tricks, or be as flexible as the dancer next to me. However, it’s important to remember that dance isn’t black and white. At the end of the day, each dancer has unique strengths, and it’s important to celebrate those strengths in order to really enjoy dance. We wish Anne the best of luck in her senior year and beyond, and we cannot wait to see all that she accomplishes!

26 August 2023 The Desi Accent Hi, my name is Amelia and this is my column for STROLL Glen Ellyn, I Think I’ll Have… It’s a kid’s perspective on restaurant reviews. I love trying new restaurants with my family and hope to introduce you to some exciting flavor discoveries in the west suburban area. Each month, I’ll visit a different restaurant to find things from the menu that you and your whole family – kids included – might like! Whether you like spicy or mild, are a picky eater, or a vegetarian, I’ll make suggests for all sorts of eaters. The Desi Accent Address: 801 Butterfield Rd., Lombard, IL Website: www.thedesiaccent.com This month I visited, The Desi Accent. The Desi Accent is an Indian restaurant on Butterfield Rd in Lombard. It has a lot of interesting foods and flavors, many my sisters and I had never experienced before. The restaurant is very authentic, and they have many traditional Indian food items, from a Masala Lassi drink that was a little spicy to the Gulab Jamun dessert that was very, very sweet and delicious. Here are a few highlights and recommendations: Drinks: For drinks, we ordered an Aam ki lassi, a Masala lassi, the Soul cooler, and Passionfruit Surprise. The Aam ki lassi is a mango puree mixed with yogurt, it has a smooth and creamy texture, and a very delicious mango ice cream flavor. The Masala lassi was interesting. It wasn’t a sweet drink like you’d expect, and it had a little bit of spice and saltiness. It wouldn’t be my first pick, but it wasn’t bad and I was glad I tried it. And now we have the Soul cooler. It… was… GREAT! It was lemony with lemon soda on top and it had mint leaves it the cup. It was minty but not toothpaste mint, a natural mint flavor. Lastly, the Passionfruit Surprise. It was a red soda that tasted like passionfruit (spoiler alert!). After trying all four drinks, my sisters and I all chose our favorites. I got the Aam ki lassi, Eden got the Soul cooler, and Eliza got the Passionfruit Surprise. No one really claimed the Masala lassi. Appetizers: For appetizers, we got Mulligatawny soup, Papdi chaat, and Dahi balla. They were all pretty good, especially the Mulligatawny soup. The Mulligatawny soup had a great flavor but a kind of dry texture, probably due to the lentils. But even though the texture was unexpected, it still tasted really good because it is infused with lemongrass leaves & Indian spices. Entrees: For entrées, we got Rogan Josh, buttered Naan, Shrimp curry, and Vegetable biryani rice. The Shrimp curry was a huge hit. (And the only thing my sisters didn’t refuse to eat). My favorite was the Rogan josh, it was lamb cooked in caramelized onions, garlic, ginger, & aromatic spices. It was spicy but delicious. The biryani rice was also incredibly flavorful, and was different than anything I’ve ever tasted (and spicy.) And the shrimp curry had a little heat, but obviously not too spicy because one of my sisters can’t handle heat well at all. Portions were large, so we had lots of leftovers to take home and I ate them for lunch the next day. BY AMELIA ANGEL I THINK I’LL HAVE

Stroll Glen Ellyn 27 Amelia is a sixth grader at Hadley Middle School, where literacy and math are her favorite subjects. She swims and plays softball, enjoys playing the piano and cello, and is a Tae Kwon Do Black Belt. Amelia’s favorite foods are her dad’s al pastor tacos, steak, and quesadillas. She is the oldest of three sisters and has a cute but naughty Spanish Water Dog named Ajax. Desserts: We ended up only getting one dessert and it was called the Gulab jamun. It is a milk-based sweet soft dough balls in sugar syrup. It tasted like an un-glazed donut hole covered in maple syrup and was a great experience for my tongue J It was honestly a lot sweeter than I anticipated, but it was still a great dessert. I think that The Desi Accent is a great restaurant to try new flavors, textures, and even smells. I will warn you, most of the dishes are spicy! And if you think you might be allergic to any of the ingredients, make sure to tell your waiter/waitress. Everyone working there is very nice and helpful with recommendations. They even have a buffet at lunchtime, that I’d love to try out sometime! If you’ve been wanting to find a new or different Indian restaurant near Glen Ellyn, I’d definitely recommend the unique style of The Desi Accent! 30 August 2023 BY HALEY WONG Across The Spider-Verse: Re-Examining The Hero MOVIE REVIEW Olague Concrete Contractors Call or Text For A Free Estimate 630-607-9336 • David OVER 30 YEARS OF EXPERIENCE! Driveways • Patios • Sidewalks • Foundations Garage Floors • Decorative Stamped Concrete • Landscape Services is unwilling to allow. Every Spider-Person, in every universe, has suffered loss. If Miles wishes to continue wearing the mask, saving everyone is simply impossible. Between protecting Brooklyn and being a prodigal son, Miles is already spread thin, but insists that he can continue in the balancing act. When the cost of his stubbornness knocks on his front door, however, Miles must choose to betray the very laws of the multiverse or risk losing it all. The premiere movie in the Miles Morales series, Into the Spider-Verse, introduced the rousing idea that everyone has the potential to save the world, a motif which this most recent installment certainly expands upon. Complete with intricate lore regarding an entire multiverse of Spider-People, Across the Spider-Verse took “anyone can wear the mask” and ran with it. Indeed, a multitude of distinct, colorful personalities took to donning the spider suit for the first time on the silver screen, everyone from an anarchy-prone rocker to a lone wolf (no, literally. One of them has fangs). This large cast avoided redundancy thanks to the meticulous character and costume designer Kris Anka, whose sharp eye granted every new superhero their own thoughtful individuality. A perceptive score tallies yet another win for the film’s creative team as their attention to detail defines Across the Spider-Verse as the doted-on brainchild of collaborative genius. Hits from Metro Boomin, Dominic Fike and more bring a youthful exuberance to the work. Additionally, each principal Spider-Person has their own signature theme song to accompany their multidimensional shenanigans, a clever addition to what was already a standout viewing experience. Across the Spider-Verse is every bit as charming as it is action-packed. It is a difficult feat to leave the theater without developing a formidable parasocial connection with at least one of these lively heroes. To live today is to live in a new age of superheroes, ones who move beyond the cardboard cutout of heroism without nuance. As the Marvel cinematic universe grows even more complex, so do its characters, who are proving themselves as emotionally versatile and relatably imperfect, now more than ever. It has been many years since a film has moved audiences to the extent that Across the Spider-Verse has. This summer blockbuster has engineered a cult following for all the right reasons, and watching this movie in theaters felt like family movie night, lovingly communal until the very end. Theaters full of fans on the edges of their seats collectively groaned as the credits began to roll, willing the screen back to life even after almost two and a half hours of screen time. Without a doubt, fans are hungry for more arachnid adventures. Beyond the Spider-Verse, the next chapter in the enthralling tale of Miles Morales, the Spider-Man determined to write his own story, is estimated for release on March 29, 2024. In the meantime, I will be saving up for popcorn. Miles Morales has saved the world, and no one seems to care. Sure, the world adores SpiderMan, whoever he may be, but as long as Miles’ true identity must remain secret, he is simply an underpaid, unrecognized and, most importantly, lonely teenage webslinger. The only friends he knows are quite literally worlds away, trapped in their own duties as the superheroes in their own universes. That is why, when Miles (Shameik Moore) discovers an elite secret society of Spider-People from all across the multiverse, he believes that he has finally found common ground. As it turns out, though, these jaded heroes only believe Miles to be naïve. Being a hero, they say, requires sacrifice which Miles

Stroll Glen Ellyn 35 The mission of the Glen Ellyn Children’s Resource Center (GECRC)- since it began as a 501c(3) nonprofit in 2003- has been to connect underprivileged families in the community with the best academic resources for their children to prosper. By offering after-school tutoring enrichment, the program has aided over 1000 underserved K-12 children in Glen Ellyn to attain Common Core standards related to literacy and social-emotional learning in Illinois. Citing the GECRC website, the three pillars of GECRC include being “mutually empowering”, “resourceful”, and advocating for the wellbeing of the children and families within their program. A separate integral part of GECRC includes the summer program for CCSD89 and District 41 Kindergarten- 7th-grade students. The program takes place from June 27th to July 28th at Churchill Elementary School (240 Geneva Rd, Glen Ellyn, IL) every weekday except Mondays from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm. From August 1st to August 3rd, the summer program will host its camp segment at First Presbyterian Church of Glen Ellyn. At the church, students will engage in crafts, outdoor exercise, and catered lesson plans. According to the GECRC website detailing the main objective of the program, students will become immersed in Project Based Learning (PBL), which “challenges students to engage in peer collaboration, problem-solving, research, and public speaking.” The PBL curriculum for the summer program this year includes an exciting advancement to science, literacy, math, social studies, and other skills focusing on strengthening interpersonal and social-emotional abilities. This new approach to Project Based Learning is fundamental for students’ intellectual growth because it tackles real-world ideas. Not only do studies prove that young students who engage in PBL have stronger senses of social responsibility later in life, but they also have a deeper understanding of concepts and an ability to converse and understand cross-culturally. PBL is also coupled with Social Emotional Learning (SEL) during classroom lessons, which teaches students significant skills like mindfulness and compassion for others. During the regular program in the school year, GECRC reinforced SEL by matching lesson plans to mindfulness words of the week, including forgiveness, excitement, fear, friendship, and more. These successes could not come to fruition without tremendous aid from real people. Volunteer tutors, teachers, GECRC staff, and community organizations help facilitate the summer program and make a difference in the lives of students every day. Qualified Summer Instructors lead each classroom during the summer program in various activities. During silent reading time, Summer Instructors individually assess students’ reading abilities and match them with books that will strengthen and build these skills for the upcoming school year. Unfortunately, summer reading loss is a common problem among Kindergarten through 7th-grade students. The term refers to the substantial loss of reading skills and brain development that occurs when students do not maintain certain essential, daily practices such as reading from a chapter book or magazine. GECRC’s use of intermittent silent reading for their summer program directly addresses this issue by breaking up reading into manageable chunks for students while allowing them to enjoy summer vacation. 36 August 2023 BY GINGER WHEELER DANCING THROUGH LIFE AND SPREADING JOY MEET MOYRA GORSKI: It’s said there are shortcuts to happiness and dancing is one of them. That’s the case for Moyra Gorski. During the pandemic of 2020 at the age of 57, Gorski took up dancing, for the first time in her life, when she walked into the Fred Astaire Dance Studio of Glen Ellyn and took a lesson with instructor Dmitry Turcan, owner and a world ballroom dancing champion. Now, she not only dances for fun, but also competes. Gorski, a trained nurse, a successful entrepreneur with her own podcast and wellness business, as well as an author, said anyone of any age can get started in dance, alone or with a partner. And she is having a blast doing it. Twirling, whirling, learning the steps (or “patterns” in dance lingo), is fantastic brain food for any age, but especially for older adults, she said. “I was never a pom-pom girl, cheerleader or gymnast, but I found after a few lessons that I really loved dancing and I was pretty good at it. I grew up playing classical piano so I love the slow dances life waltz, fox trot, tango. Dancing brings me great joy and it’s a mental challenge,” said Gorski Gorski grew up in Massachusetts but moved to Glen Ellyn at age 16 with her parents and siblings. She is the youngest of three sisters with a younger brother, and at the time of the move to Glen Ellyn, the family had a female exchange student from Australia also living with them. The Gorski clan made an immediate impression on their neighbors in Glen Ellyn. Gorski said one of her (still) best friends was the neighbor boy who came over and introduced himself on the day the clan moved in. “With four new girls across the street, this boy wanted to check things out. We became fast friends and walked to school each and every day. I appreciated him introducing me to his friends and the school, Glenbard West. We’re still friends today,” said Gorski. Gorski thinks having parents who were devoted to a passion for helping others shaped her into being the kind of person that wants to also help others. And with a love of science and medicine, she is interested in the ingredients of the things we surround our bodies with, as well as what we put into it. After earning her nursing degree at Hope College in Michigan and working for a few years with patients at the then named Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago, now the Shirley Ryan Ability Labs, and becoming an expert at the needs of patients with paralysis, stroke or other serious health challenges, Gorski got into medical sales for specialty medical equipment. Marriage and four children of her own brought her to Wheaton some 30 years ago and into her own business. Gorski with Dmitry Turcan of Fred Astaire Dance Studio of Glen Ellyn. Stroll Glen Ellyn 37 For the last 23 years, Gorski has been a representative and wellness advocate for Shaklee, the nationally known company with a mission for bringing True Wellness to the world with “green” cleaning products, nutritional supplements, clean skin care, kids’ nutrition and over 350 wellness products. “My son had major allergies and issues with RSV. A friend recommended that I look into the chemicals in the products I was using to clean my home, make some changes in our diet and get some help from a local chiropractor. I did. As I made changes to more natural products from Shaklee, created a more non-toxic environment in my home and learned more about how to build health, my son started to feel better. As I tried some of the products myself, I felt better each day. It was exciting as I learned how I could share what I was finding with others and have an impact on their health too. I’ve never looked back,” she said. “With Gorski Wellness, I’ve been able to raise four great kids, spend time with them and build a business in my spare time,” she said. “It’s a joy to me to encourage other people to be healthier, improve their mental outlook on life and find their own joy.” Gorski also hosts a podcast called “Your Journey to Joy” where she shares stories of hope and overcoming life’s challenges along with tips on ways to find joy in your own life. You can find the podcast as well as the Journey to Joy journal that Gorski created on her website moyragorski. com as well as on Apple Podcasts, Podbean and Spotify. In addition to addressing the issues of wellness, health and addiction challenges and finding more joy in one’s life on her podcast, Gorski also offers public speaking on wellness, self-care and entrepreneurship. She also coaches women, age 45 and above, helping them create a care plan that helps them reach their goals and look and feel their absolute best. She said, “I help women navigate their way through aging, help them create healthy habits so they look and feel their absolute best regardless of their age. I have created a community of women who want to make a difference, be part of a like-minded community and create additional streams of income. I will also be hosting retreats in the future. And of course there is always movement and dance involved.” Gorski said, “I’ve learned so much from dancing. I lead a company, I’m a mom of 4, I’m a successful entrepreneur. Then I started dancing and my partner said, ‘I’m going to lead you. You lead out there. And in here, I lead’ That’s a lesson in life. With dance, I’ve learned that instead of doing, doing, doing, you have to feel. You feel in your heart. Dance is often just a metaphor for life. It’s taught me to be present, focus on fun, quit focusing so much on perfectionism. As challenges have come along, I am grateful I had a place to go to forget about the stressors and just have fun. The challenges of raising a family and building a business from scratch have brought many good times and some not so good. Finding dance has given me an outlet for fun and stress relief along with a new group of friends.” The dance competitions are challenging but lots of fun, Gorski said. She loves to take on those bigger challenges in life and enjoy. “It comes back to joy. I found a place I can go and just forget about everything but the patterns (steps) and the music. And on dance days for competition you get all dressed up in beautiful gowns, with hair and makeup, and then you get a chance to win a prize. It’s so much fun. It’s fun to be a part of others who are doing the same things and having fun with dance too.” Gorski’s husband of thirty years doesn’t dance, but he is supportive of her hobby and comes to watch the competitions. She said, “It’s fine for single people to come into the studio and learn. It can be very athletic and it is great exercise, but the fitness and health benefits are just a bonus. The real gift is just letting go of every day responsibilities and having fun.” These days, Gorski trains at NP Dance in Naperville, closer to her home in Wheaton, but she still has a soft spot for the Glen Ellyn studio, where she got her start. On competition days, she’s paired with Naperville-based NP Dance’s Norbert Czerski, a professional dance instructor. Whirling through life with joy, journaling and helping people, Gorski hopes that she can encourage others, especially women in their middle ages, to also find joy, meaning and purpose. “When your kids grow up and leave home, when you’re older and life throws challenges your way, things can be difficult. But there is always a bright spot somewhere. It’s up to us to go find the things that bring us joy. Everyone has to find their own, but I’m happy to help people feel better, heal, learn new ways to adjust to life and work and find their own special joy.” Find more about Moyra’s thoughts, her journal, her podcast and Shaklee products at moyragorski.com to discover your own journey to joy. 42 August 2023 “When I moved to Glen Ellyn in 2015 I made my first friend in town after attending my very first Rise class. Knowing I would get to see a friendly face and chat with Lindsey Griffin at the studio motivated me to make sure I got to class a few times a week!” says owner Katelyn Kaese. “Now, 8 years later as our clients join us at the Rise Fitness + Wellness studios each day, it is such a joy to watch more of these fitness friendships form.” “We motivate and keep each other accountable,” says Kristen Reynolds of her friends at Rise. “Every week we chat about our plan for the upcoming week, what classes we are taking, meal planning, how we will make time to take care of ourselves. It keeps us in alignment”. There are friends that show up for each other every morning at 5am class and set up each other’s spots. Knowing that a mat is waiting for you makes sure you get yourself to class. These friends support each other and start their days with a positive energy that lasts all day long. There are friends that carpool to class to make sure that they both show up, which is a key ingredient for friends Valerie Lajb and Stephanie Hazinski. If someone is waiting in your driveway, you lace up those shoes and get out the door! The Rise community becomes a daily check in for clients to take care of themselves and feel part of a supportive team. The class environment feels like you are on a team with your classmates and the collaborative positive energy of that team stays with you all day. Risers Kate Modrow and Cat Arnswald meet several times a week to stay active, including indoor circuits and outdoor bootcamp with Carin Fanter. Whether it’s walking to meet friends and play tennis or hopping on bikes to run the Freedom Four Race in Glen Ellyn, after so many training sessions together they lift each other up and finish their race strong together! We all feel that fire of wanting to take care of ourselves and maintain a wellness routine. But often we let the fire die out before the change has a chance to connect with our lifestyle. One of the best ways to keep yourself in a wellness routine is to have a support system of friends who work together to keep the routine in motion. FITNESS FRIENDSHIPS: RISE WELLNESS SERIES BY KATELYN KASSE

Stroll Glen Ellyn 43 Long time riser Stacy Short says this about her friend Kristen Schaffnit: “She makes sure I get to class and I do the same for her. We love to do the Rise Challenges together because we feel our best when we work as a team!” Rise has also become a place where couples enjoy “double date” workouts. Riser Ryan McNeill shares that “my wife and I have been friends with a local couple (Brad and Kristen Schaffnit) since we moved here nine years ago and the only time we can get together with our busy work, family, and sports schedules is in the cycle studio!” Rise Challenges are often the catalyst to a fitness friendship that inspire many participants to keep their wellness goals going all year long. In early September, the Rise Back to You Challenge will kick off. This 6-weeklong wellness program incorporates nutrition, fitness and community support to create a framework for participants to feel long-lasting and maintainable results. Working with a partner you will have daily wellness tracking and opportunities to celebrate successes along the Challenge journey. The group has weekly meetings with various topics to level up your wellness - sleep experts, energy clearings, sound baths, building a beautiful grazing board, are just a few of the interesting sessions we will host during a Challenge. Sign up will start on August 15 - head to https/www.riseglenellyn. com/ for more details and sign up information for this Rise Challenge.

44 August 2023 In the world of concrete construction, family-owned businesses often leave a lasting impact, combining tradition, expertise, and a shared passion for their craft. One such remarkable story is that of the father and son duo behind Olague Concrete Contractors. In the concrete industry for more than 3 decades, Olague Concrete specializes in residential Concrete Installation, Decorative Concrete, Concrete Repairs and Concrete Demolition and removal. Over time, father Guadalupe has built a reputation for delivering high-quality concrete solutions while maintaining a strong focus on customer satisfaction. And, it’s now son David’s turn to continue the legacy. Over the years, both from working for other companies and going out on his own, Guadalupe has been shaping communities in the Chicagoland suburbs, constructing impressive structures, and nurturing a strong bond between generations among his 5 sons. With his experience in the industry, Guadalupe aimed to build a company that would prioritize quality, integrity, and customer satisfaction. Little did he know that his son David, would follow in his footsteps, forging a path of his own. The family is originally from the state of Zacatecas, in Mexico, and moved to West Chicago when David was just 6 months old. As David grew up, he developed a keen interest in his father’s work. He observed the dedication and craftsmanship that went into every project, fostering a deep admiration for the concrete industry. David’s father encouraged him to get a good education and instilled in him a strong work ethic. David began working with his father at age 15 and never looked back. Guadalupe takes immense pride in watching his son take the reins and lead the company to new heights. The passing of knowledge, experiences, and values from one generation to the next has created a harmonious blend of tradition and innovation within the company.
