Jay Crosby Award
Submission

MASTERS OF OUR F.A.T.E.

Presented By Arizona Guide Right Youth Program on Behalf of The Phoenix Alumni Chapter
of Kappa Alpha Psi, Fraternity, Incorporated

GREETINGS FROM THE
AZ GUIDE RIGHT CHAIRMAN

AZ Guide Right Chairman

Jason Richardson

Dear Western Province Guide Right Awards Chairman and Committee,

It is again an honor to submit the Phoenix Kappa League’s “year in review” for consideration of
the Jay Crosby Guide Right Program award. Continuing our theme of transforming young men
from liabilities to assets, we put together a program year which re-enforces what it means to take
on responsibility, understand accountability and become a productive young man in our society.

Whether its “Impacted for Purpose”, “My brother’s keeper”, or “It takes a village”, to me, they
are different catch phases of the same mission. Our mission, as stewards of the youth, is to make
sure they have all the resources necessary to overcome obstacles along the journey towards
success. As parents we struggle and sacrifice our own comfort so that our children can be
expose to the best opportunities for success. As teachers we develop young minds and give them
the foundation for critical thinking to optimize the decision making process and increase success
in life. As Youth Program Coordinators, like the Guide Right Chairman, I see our role as tapping
into the vast array of resources in our fraternity, community and professional lives to expose
these young minds to what success truly means and how does one go about achieving it.

Getting back to this year’s theme of “transforming young men from liabilities to assets”, our
Kappa Leaguers need to realize that resources are not in abundance; not everyone can partake in
the horn of plenty; and while we don’t mind sacrificing and committing these resources, they
MUST understand that liabilities go through life consuming and never giving back to the
collective. Assets, on the other hand, eventually take what they’ve been given in life and return
it in the form of contributing to the common good. In business terms, this is a Return on
Investment. What’s the ROI, you ask? The College accepts a student (as oppose to another
candidate) and that student graduates on time. Parents pay for college with the expectation of
laying the ground works for a self-sufficient young person. The Youth Programs help students
along the way and in return the student give back to his community; that is what it means to be
an asset in your family, community, school and job. Essentially, we are investing in Kappa
League now so the students may produce in the future.

As I mentioned last year, the Phoenix Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi, Fraternity,
Incorporated has built a strong foundation for it’s Kappa League Program and it was a pleasure
facilitating the journey towards leadership awareness for a second year.

PROGRESS OF GUIDE RIGHT PROGRAM(S) section 4
List the goals and objectives of your Guide Right program and describe tracking/measurements that
indicate success or growth of your Guide Right Program(s).

Our theme is “Transforming Young Men from Liabilities to Assets. To facilitate this transformation,
we developed four tenets of F.A.T.E. which would contribute to becoming an asset:

1. Foster curiosity & comprehension of key areas in Science, Technology, Engineering, & math (STEM)
2. Assist with resources and tools necessary for academic excellence
3. Teach basic social etiquette guidelines
4. Encourage appreciation of Phoenix Theater/Musical Arts

Monthly workshops were created to re-inforce these tenets. Attendance was tracked and time
allotted at the end of the workshop for group discussion and Kappa Leaguer feedback.
If necessary, please attach information to this form. (Limit to one page)

CHILD SAFETY PROGRAM(S) section 5
Describe your Child Safety program (background checks, training, etc)

Risk management protocols have been established to ensure students have a positive experience
both with the Kappa League Program and in their day-to-day lives:

1. Background checks: Phoenix Alumni conducts background checks of Kappa League
committee members to avoid potential conflict with court mandated restrictions.

2. Limited contact: One-on-One mentoring is discouraged as a practice. Group interaction
with students and/or Parent supervision is the preferred method of contact.

3. Justice System Interaction Workshop: Each year Phoenix Kappa League host a
workshop with law enforcement to discuss proper ways to interact with law enforcement.

If necessary, please attach information to this form. (Limit to one page)

LIST NEW GUIDE RIGHT PROGRAM(S) OR INNOVATIONS section 6

• Monthly book club: This year we distributed Michael Ferrera’s, “The Perfect
Gentleman’s Pocket Guide”. Each month we pick excerpts from the book and use them
as talking point for discussion with Kappa Leaguers.

• Tutoring reimbursement: Phoenix Alumni partnered with Varsity Tutoring to provide
professional academic tutoring to Kappa Leaguers. The program allowed a max
reimbursement for tutoring services.

• Phoenix Kappa League App: Using email to communicate is antiquated so rolled out a
smartphone App to keep parents, Kappa Leaguers and other stakeholders in the loop.

LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION

Community recognition

Mr. Shannon Faulk
Guide Right Director
Western Province
Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.
Dear Mr. Faulk,
On behalf of Real Engagement through Active Philanthropy, it is my pleasure to recommend the
Arizona Guide Right & Phoenix Kappa League Program of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. for
the Western Provence Guide Right Awards.
Real Engagement through Active Philanthropy (REAP) is an Arizona based organization which
uses collaborative funds setup through the Arizona Community Foundation to establish a giving
circle which will leave a legacy of giving for future generations by reinvesting in and
strengthening our communities. This charitable fund allows members to determine which
organizations and programs to support. The focus areas for REAP include:

• Career Exploration
• Succession Planning
• Educational Enrichment
• College Preparation
Because of the history of outstanding work, the Brothers of Kappa Alpha Psi have done with
their male mentoring program and because it is so closely in line with our objectives, REAP was
proud to include the Phoenix Kappa League in it’s first distribution of funds to worthy
organizations. Therefore, it is our please to recommend the chapter for its Fraternal Awards.

Sincerely,

Chuck Kelly

Mr. Shannon Faulk
Guide Right Director
Western Province
Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.
Dear Mr. Faulk,
It is an honor and privilege to nominate the Phoenix Alumni Chapter’s Guide Right Program and
Jason Richardson (our Guide Right Chairman) for the Jay Crosby and Bert Wadkins Western
Province Awards.
I am an active member of Phoenix Alumni Chapter and have been extremely impressed with the
level of professionalism and devotion the brothers have demonstrated with the Guide Right
Program. It is because of these attributes that I enrolled both my sons in the Kappa League
Program this year.
For the past two years, Jason Richardson has done an outstanding job coordinating monthly
workshops, social activities, and community service opportunities which focus on building a
foundation self-independence. The great aspect of the PAC Kappa League Program is that it
gives the Kappa Leaguers a chance to see professionals that look like them in a personal setting
where active dialog can be had.
In conclusion, my testimony to the positive impact the Guide Right Program has in the
community can be summarized with the fact that I have both of my sons in the program.

A YEAR IN REVIEW

FEBRUARY, 2016

Financial Freedom

The Financial Education Workshop was a huge success. Edward Lumpkin, Sr (a Kappa League
Parent) presented how much money someone needs to meet basic living expenses. We also
learned the di erence between a person who saves money and one who borrows.

Suns vs. Raptors

Chapter members and Kappa Leaguers attended the Phoenix Suns vs. the Toronto Raptors game,
seated in a corporate box provided by Cox Communications.

FEBRUARY, 2016

Black History Month Jeopardy

We hosted our 5th Annual Black History Jeopardy event. Much like the game show made
famous by Alex Trebek, this Jeopardy is a series of trivia pursuit questions that focuses on a
Black History theme. Special thanks to Brother George Anderson, Silhouette Venecia Anderson
and their son Paul for working hard to make sure this was a fun and exciting learning experience.

MARCH, 2016

“Mankind’s greatest gift, also its greatest curse, is that we have free choice.” E. Kubler-Ross.
The Kappa Leaguers had the honor of having Officer Jonathan Kemp speak to them on “making
the right choices when interacting with law enforcement”. Officer Kemp informed us of the
rights we have as citizens and what to expect during initial engagement with law enforcement.
The choices we make in life can drastically impact the outcome. Know your rights and use
common sense to defuse, rather than escalate a volatile situation.

APRIL, 2016

One of the most important aspects of being a leader is the ability to express ideas and in uence
others with spoken word. Kappa Leaguers were encouraged to exercise their public speaking
skills during monthly workshops. The goal was to make them comfortable speaking in front of
an audience. Brother Anthony Warren’s public speaking exercise was a HUGE SUCCESS!
Kappa Leaguers had to create a story using random pictures.....WE HAD A GREAT TIME!!!!

MAY, 2016

What does your appearance say about you?

Our very own Brother Timothy Woods presented the foundation of building a professional
wardrobe. Our Kappa Leaguers also learned the importance of first impressions; make sure your
attire projects an accurate representation of who you are. Brother Woods gave valuable tips on
how to tie a bowtie.... I’m pretty sure some of the Kappa Leaguers were impressed.

Kappa showcase

For the 13th Annual Kappa League showcase and scholarship luncheon, we honored all six of our
seniors with $10,000 of scholarships.

• Sterling Leverett (KL Vice
President), University of Arizona

• Chase Steed, North Carolina A&T
• Dallas Chewning (KL President),

University of Arizona
• Jonathan Johnson, Grand Valley

State University
• Kaleb Pitts, Columbia University
• Dominic Scott, Xavier University-

New Orleans (attended summer
classes so he’s not pictured)

JUNE, 2016
Kappa Kamp

Phoenix Kappa Leaguers on their way to #KappaKamp20. Wish them well!

SEPTEBER, 2016

The 2016-17 KappaLeague Phxkl Phoenix
officially started this weekend. Over 18
Kappa Leaguers and their parents were in
attendance. Continuing the Theme of being
an Asset in all walks of life, we look
forward to helping these young men on the
journey towards success.

13th Annual Thurgood Marshall Scholarship Brunch

The KappaLeague Phxkl Phoenix had the pleasure of hearing Johnny C. Taylor Jr. speak at the
13th Annual Thurgood Marshall Scholarship Brunch. This year's message was, "Education: The
Means to Economic Empowerment" which really translated to "Only Us can save Us". Brother
Taylor spoke of 3 key areas to ensure educational success:
1) Engage in our kid's Education (Parent Teacher Conf)
2) Invest in Education (tuition before Jordans)
3) Hold the system accountable (know your local officials)

OCTOBER, 2016

For the October workshop we had 29 Kappa Leaguers in attendance. The focus was on getting to
know one another. To facilitate this, we had a ice breaker entitled, "The Good, the bad & the
ugly" where the students described eventful things over the past week. We also conducted a
writing workshop for the Laptop grant (which evolved into a public speaking exercise). Overall,
I think we learned a lot about each other and havebuilt a good foundation for a year full of
achievement and leadership.

Four Phoenix Kappa Leaguers submitted
essays to #laptops4learning. All four
received computers. Special thanks to the
Phoenix Police Department for facilitating
this activity. #WhyKappasMentor

NOVEMBER, 2016

Birth of A Nation

Phoenix Kappa League held a Private viewing of Nate Parker's, "The Birth Of A Nation". We
invited other Valley youth groups to attend and join in a Post-movie Discussion.....
1) liabilities vs Assets
2) compare and contrast 1830's with today
3) Hero or Terrorist?
4) the value of a life

Kappa Leaguers participated in their annual community service project. We had a wonderful
time helping St. Vincent DePaul cultivate one of three gardens they operate in the Valley. The
produce grown on these community farms is used to nourish the bodies of valley residents who
otherwise would not have the blessing of a good meal.
Shout out to my young Kappa Brother's from ASU for making a guest appearance. Those men
are truly leaders in their community.
So, what was in the garden you ask? They've got greens, beans, potatoes, tomatoes.....YOU
NAME IT!!!!!!

DECEMBER, 2016

Kappa League helped spread a little joy to
those less fortunate.
Founded in 1964, UMOM is the largest
shelter for homeless families in Arizona.
Families have the opportunity to gain the
skills, medical care, quality child care, and
education they need to rebuild their lives
and succeed when they leave. This year Phx
KL donated Toiletries, Baby items and
clothing to the Woman's shelter UMOM.

SHOP WITH A KAPPA
Thanks to the devotion of valley Nupes to
this worthy cause, we were able to provide a
little holiday cheer to 21 students in the
Roosevelt school district. After speaking
with the Social Workers, Parents and
Brothers, I can report that this year’s Shop-
With-A-Kappa was a success. #SWAK

This year we partnered with the South
Mountain Target Manager who was gracious
enough to allocate two registers, store gift
cards and access to special pricing with the
Pinwheel App….you just have to ask.

JANUARY, 2017

Ask a Phoenix Kappa Leaguer, why March on MLK day?
We March to honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. One of many civil rights activist of the 1960's
who sacrificed blood, sweat and tears in the fight for justice of all U.S. Citizens. He was
instrumental with effecting change in how people of color were treated.
We March to remember a time when laws were in place to re-enforce a belief of “separate, but
UNEQUAL”. The Marches from Selma to Montgomery were iconic moments of the civil rights
movement when Black people demanded their constitutional rights (in this case, the right to
vote).
Finally, we march to show solidarity in the belief that ALL citizens are equal in the eyes of the
law. Kappa Leaguers are learning today so that we can be leaders tomorrow.

FEBRUARY, 2017

Our Kappa Leaguers were tasked with the
challenge of defining traits of a leader and
identifying current people they look to for
leadership. Much like Sun Tzu's (The Art Of
War) our guys looked for individuals with
Wisdom, Courage, Discipline, Benevolence
and integrity (to name a few).

Special thanks to Anderson Johnson III for
providing insight into the role leadership has
played both in his military and private
career.

STEM ACTIVITY

Kappa Leaguers, Noah and Ramon, at Connect2STEM 2017 at The University of Arizona (UA)
College of Medicine in downtown Phoenix on January 28th. Noah and Ramon did a great job at
the Intel table! They showed students their ‘electric guitar’ – a STEM project that they had
designed and developed. It was a big hit with a lot of interest from the students (and from the
Intel Volunteers)!

WHAT DOES IT TAKE TO BE A LEADER?
Yesterday, Kappa Leaguers had the honor of meeting with Alvin Heggs, owner of Superstition
Springs Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram. "Big Al" shared words of wisdom on the journey toward
success...
***Luck is being prepared for when opportunity knocks.
***Talent gets you in the door but GRIT keeps you in there.
***Successful people just need the goal (or objective). They already have the motivation and
drive to execute the plan.
***Genuine Character will help build good relationships.

UNIVERSITY OF ARIZONA COLLEGE TOUR

Finished the college tour with a visit from
one of PAC's neophytes, Dr. Marlion
Cummings. He had the wonderful idea of
starting an Academic Library for the Kappa
leaguers. To start us off, he donated ACT
prep training material.
