“Lift Every Voice and Sing”

“Lift Every Voice and Sing”

Lift every voice and sing, till earth and heaven ring
Ring with the harmonies of liberty;

Let our rejoicing rise, high as the listening skies,
Let it resound loud as the rolling sea.
Sing a song full of the faith
that the dark past has taught us,
Sing a song full of the hope
that the present has brought us;

Facing the rising sun of our new day begun,
Let us march on till victory is won.

Stony the road we trod, bitter the chastening rod,
Felt in the days when hope unborn had died;

Yet with a steady beat, have not our weary feet,
Come to the place for which our fathers sighed?

We have come over a way
that with tears has been watered.
We have come, treading our path
through the blood of the slaughtered,
Out from a gloomy past, till now we stand at last

Where the white gleam
of our bright star is cast.

God of our weary years, God of our silent tears,
Thou who has brought us thus far on the way;
Thou who hast by thy might, led us into the light,

Keep us forever in the path, we pray.
Lest our feet stray from the places
Our God where we met Thee,

Lest our hearts drunk with the wine of the world
we forget Thee;

Shadowed beneath Thy hand
May we forever stand,
True to our God,

True to our native land.

Dr. Milton Mattox, Polemarch

The Kappa League Program of the Phoenix Alumni Chapter continues to be one of the
premier programs in the Western Province of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. Our own Jason
Richardson won this year’s Medium Chapter, Guide Right Director of the Year Award; an
award that our Guide Right Directors have won 4 times out of the last 6 years. Of course,
these awards are the culmination of the hard work by the leadership staff working with the
Guide Right Directors.

Every year, the young men participating in our Kappa League Program inspire me and
this is especially true this year. The 2015/2016 Kappa League participants seem destined
for greatness and those members who are graduating from high school this year have
aspirations to continue their education at universities such as the University of Arizona,
Grand Canyon University, Columbia University, Xavier University of Louisiana and North
Carolina A&T State University. All of our senior members of the Kappa League Program are
matriculating into universities and for this, we are extremely proud of them and their parents for persevering during these
challenging times for the youth of our community.

As a review, the goals of the Kappa League Program are:

To help youth, especially those of high school age, in the selection of courses leading to vocations compatible with their
aptitudes, interests, and personalities.

To assist students, while they are in training, to get started in employment, and to progress successfully in their chosen fields.

To assist parents in the handling of their children by giving them opportunities to talk over their problems with those who
know and are successful in their chosen vocations.

To afford the less fortunate youths a respite from the drudgery of the streets, through sponsored entertainment and
cultural enrichment.

To inform youth of the values of higher education including, but not limited to, providing assistance for continued
educational pursuits, scholarships, loans, professional counseling, fellowships, etc.

These are the major tenets of our Kappa League Program and as we do every spring, we end the year with our Kappa
League Scholarship Showcase where the Kappa League participants have an opportunity to demonstrate what they have
learned over the past year and the program awards scholarships to the graduating members of the program.

I want to thank all the young men participating in the Kappa League Program for working tirelessly with us all year. I also
want to thank the program’s staff for doing an outstanding job year over year. Lastly, I want to thank the parents who
believe in our program and its vision. As one of our previous Guide Right Directors posited, “It takes a village to help our
gifted and talented young men become all that they were created to be.” Simply stated, our program would not be as
successful as it is without the support of all of you.

Sincerely,

Dr. Milton Mattox, BSEET, MBA, Ed.D.

Greetings, Guide Right Director

Jason Richardson

On behalf of the Kappa League Committee, welcome to the 13th Annual Kappa League Showcase and Scholarship
Luncheon.

This year’s program can be summarized as a journey along the pathway towards leadership awareness. Each of the
workshops, activities and community events were designed to expose our young men to qualities and traits of a true
leader; someone who contributes to the greater good.

Expanding on last year’s theme of “Academic Excellence”, the goal was to introduce a basic set of skills that would
prepare young men for adulthood. Essentially, tell a story of transformation; the process we all go through in life from
being a dependent to being dependable. That is how we developed this year’s theme, “Transforming Young Men from
Liabilities to Assets in their Families, Communities and Schools”.

To facilitate this journey, we developed four tenets of F.A.T.E. which would contribute to becoming an asset:

1. Foster curiosity & comprehension of key areas in Science, Technology, Engineering, & Math (STEM)
2. Assist with resources and tools necessary for academic excellence
3. Teach basic social etiquette guidelines
4. Encourage appreciation of Phoenix Theater/Musical Arts

This year we implemented a tutoring reimbursement program which assisted a Kappa Leaguer in bringing his geometry
grade up from an ‘F’ to a ‘B’. We distributed “The Perfect Gentleman’s Pocket Guide: Modern Secrets to Etiquette,
Style, and Charming Charisma” by Michael G. Ferrera. We conducted workshops that touched on STEM, Scholarships,
Financial Freedom, and careers in the Health Profession.

The journey is far from complete. We have six seniors in the program that will be closing the chapter of high school
in their lives and beginning a new chapter in college. All six will be attending four-year universities and we wish them
success as they open a new chapter in their life.

In closing, I would be remised not to say thank you to the professionals who shared their knowledge and expertise during
the workshops; to my fraternity brothers for providing assistance and guidance as I learned the role of Guide Right
Director; and finally, to parents who sacrificed weekends so their sons could attend workshops and activities.

“….I am the master of my FATE; I am the captain of my soul”, William E. Hensley

Thank you,
Jason Richardson

The Coming Together
of my People

There must be a coming together of my people,
not just a holding of hands, but

a using of hands to build strong Institutions.

There must be a loving together of my people,
not just a physical love where

we share our bodies, but a spiritual
love where we lay bare our souls.

There must be a real trusting of one another
between my people

so that we will respect each other
as sisters and brothers.

There must be a caring for each other by my people,
Where we will be on hand when needed
and share when there is little in the till.

There must be a rebuilding of the family among
my people

Where the home is the first school for the
lessons of life,

Where Mothers are the Queens and Fathers are the Kings,
and sisters and brothers look
out for each other.

Yes, there must be an awareness of the past
for my people

Learning all about Africa our native land
So we’ll know who we are and insure
our own destiny.

There must be a praying together of my people
So we’ll have strength for the struggle
and hope in the future.

For when there is that coming together, and
that building together and

the loving each other, trusting,
caring and praying together

then we can truly celebrate the
Freedom of our People

Keynote Speaker

Lovelle A. McMichael Sr.

A product of Germantown, Philadelphia – Lovelle A. McMichael Sr. was either destined for insignificance or greatness.
And while not choosing his path for greatness, the work he does unceasingly speaks to his personal commitment
to making the world a better place. Mr. Lovelle McMichael relocated to Arizona in 2001 after securing a job at the
prestigious Vanguard. He felt God was calling him to the Valley and without hesitation he followed the call on his life.
He is the founder and establishmentarian of Impacted for Purpose (IFP), an Arizona non-profit organization that
specializes in community outreach. This organization not only serves the local community but reaches beyond the prison
walls of Lewis State Prison were Pastor McMichael has served as Pastor to hundreds of inmates. Since its inception in
2005, IFP’s outreach ministry has serviced more than 500 families, and 2000 individuals monthly through partnerships
developed and sustained with United Food Bank, Walmart, Safeway, Albertson, Paradise Bakery, and Kneaders Bakery.
Mr. McMichael has also developed a partnership with the Stardust foundation and has expanded the outreach to not
only provide food items to individuals and families but much needed household goods as well. He has also fostered and
maintained partnerships with the Maricopa County Workforce Connection. This partnership assists individuals in building
their resumes and developing job readiness skills. Other community partnerships include the Mesa United Way, Feed

America, and The Oasis Church. Mr. McMichael is making an impact in the community by focusing on and developing
the holistic needs of individuals so they can improve mentally, spiritually, physically, and educationally.

In 2007, Mr. McMichael and his wife, Dr. Angie Williams-McMichael,established Turning Point Youth Facility, an Arizona
non-profit organization that services teenage boys ages 14-18. Over the past two years, Mr. McMichael has serviced
more than 500 youth and has been able to play an instrumental role in shaping our young men of tomorrow by providing
quality mentoring and service in independent living skills. Mr. McMichael has fought for educational equality of the youth
in his care and has been at the forefront of the juvenile justice department as an advocate for youth who traditionally are
silenced and left without a voice.

For more than a decade Mr. McMichael has been a leading force in the arena of social justice. For example, he was
at the forefront of the Phoenix Trayvon Martin Rally. McMichael was featured on the front page of the Arizona Republic
as a community leader who was leading the rally participants in prayer to unite everyone and take action in times of
national crisis. His professional career has afforded him the opportunity to work at numerous colleges and universities
and lead initiatives for providing minority youth access to higher education. While in Tucson, Arizona his research and
implementation for a minority youth based substance abuse and HIV prevention program permitted his work to to be
locally recogonized. His collaboration with The Southern Arizona AIDS Foundation, Tucson Urban League, and local
schools facilitated a means for him to advocate and educate our community around these disparities that affect our
community.

More recently, Mr. McMichael has served as a panelist and workshop facilitator for the National Thurgood Marshall
Leadership Institute in New York City. He has presented workshops on nonprofit and philanthropic careers for more
than 600 students from private HBCU’s and he continues to provide mentorship and guidance to these youth across the
globe. He has served on the Brother to Brother Career Panel with John Marshall (Thurgood Marshall’s Son) to provide
youth with career and educational guidance. TMCF recognizes Mr. McMichael’s contributions to society and respects him
as one of the leading young nonprofit and philanthropic leaders in his community.

Mr. McMichael holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration/Marketing and with dual minors in
Psychology and African American Studies from Millersville University in Pennsylvania. Additionally, he earned his Master’s
in Secondary Education and an Arizona Teaching Certificate from the University of Phoenix. In 2004, Mr. McMichael
was the 1st African American to obtain a teaching certificate in African American Studies through the State of Arizona
Department Of Education. He attended Fuller Theological Seminary for two years and later transferred and completed
his Masters in Ministry degree from Central Christian Univerity in 2014.

Lovelle is a member of several professional organizations and participates on a local, district, regional, and national level.
The organizations include: Life member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Incorporated, 100 Black Men of Phoenix, and the
NAACP. He was a nominee for Youth Mentor of the Year at the 2012 Icon Awards, and has received numerous awards
and certificates for his outstanding contributions to humanity. Lovelle was a member of Phoenix’s African American
Leadership Institute Class of 2013 through a community Partnership with Valle Del Sol and was among a class of peers
that are top in their respective fields. Lovelle has received a citation from the Mayor of Mesa, Arizona for his eight years
of service in the Mesa community and he was named one of the Phoenix Business Journal’s 40 Under 40 – Class of
2014.  Most recently Lovelle has received the 2015 Thurgood Marshall College Fund Award of Merit, the 2015 President’s
Volunteer and Service Award, 2015 Phoenix MLK Living The Dream Award for his outstanding contribution to youth in
the Valley of the Sun, the 2015 State of Black Arizona Community Luminary Award for being an asset to the community,
affecting change and contributing to the quality of life in our cities and the state of Arizona and the 2015 100 Black Men
of Phoenix Award for Significant Contribution to the Men of Tomorrow Academy.

With all the professional and community acolades, the biggest part of Lovelle McMichael’s life is his family. He has
been married for more than 10 years to Dr. Angie Williams-McMichael and they have two sons, Lovelle Jr. and Logan.
Additionally he has opened his home to a mentee from his group home and is now the proud dad to Kedrick Mitchell.

Kickoff Meeting

The 2015-2016 Kappa League Program was officially kicked-off on Saturday, September 12. Parents, students
and members of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. were in attendance. Parents completed necessary paperwork
and committee members presented goals and expectations. This year, our theme is Transforming Young Men from
Liabilities to Assets. To facilitate this transformation we will focus on four key areas (FATE):
• Foster curiosity & comprehension of key areas in Science, Technology, Engineering & Math (STEM)
• Assist Kappa League participants with resources and tools for academic excellence
• Teach basic social etiquette guidelines
• Encourage appreciation of Phoenix Theater/Musical Arts

Thurgood Marshall
Brunch

This year’s Thurgood Marshall Scholarship Brunch was emceed by the valley’s own, Susan
Casper (host of ABC15’s Sonoran Living). The Keynote Speaker was Chris Simmons, a VP
for Price Waterhouse. Some of the key takeaways were: Give attention to detail for tasks both
great and small; you never know when someone is evaluating your work ethic.
VPA: Vision Protection Agency, similar to the EPA, should be used to keep your dream alive.
The 3 steps are:
1) Confront your fears. Use power and confidence to help promote good vision
2) Set a plan to reach the vision
3) Gravitate around people who can keep you on track to realize the vision
To summarize, “Look right, sound right, do right AND BE READY”. They will like you if you have
a plan and people hook up people they like” (Chris Simmons).

STEM Workshop

We had an exciting workshop on Saturday, October 10. ASU students from the National Society of Black
Engineers (NSBE) conducted a hands-on workshop. Our Kappa Leaguers took everyday items, put on
their creative caps and constructed “soda bottle, CD” transportation vehicles.
Special thanks to Brother Tyrone Benson for presenting how automation not only transforms the work force,
but is shaping desired skills needed from humans, “….the days of high pay, low skill jobs are diminishing;
repetitive tasks that require little decision making are being automated with robotics and computers; the
new work force for humans will consist of highly creative, complex decision makers”.

Officer Jonathan Kemp

“Mankind’s greatest gift, also its greatest curse, is that we have free choice.” Elisabeth Kubler-Ross.
The Kappa Leaguers had the honor of having Officer Jonathan Kemp speak to them on “making the
right choices when interacting with law enforcement”. Officer Kemp informed us of the rights we have as
citizens and what to expect during initial engagement with law enforcement.
The choices we make in life can drastically impact the outcome when dealing with law enforcement.
Know your rights and use common sense to defuse, rather than escalate a volatile situation.

Public Speaking

One of the most important aspects of being a leader is the ability to express ideas and influence others
with spoken word. Kappa Leaguers were encouraged to exercise their public speaking skills during
monthly workshops. The goal was to make them comfortable speaking in front of an audience. Brother
Anthony Warren’s public speaking exercise was a HUGE SUCCESS! Kappa Leaguers had to create a
story using random pictures.....WE HAD A GREAT TIME!!!!

Dress for Success

We finished up our Kappa League workshops with, “What does your appearance say about you?”
Our very own Brother Timothy Woods presented the foundation of building a professional wardrobe.
Our Kappa Leaguers also learned the importance of first impressions; make sure your attire projects an
accurate representation of who you are. Brother Woods gave valuable tips on how to tie a bowtie….I’m
pretty sure some of the Kappa Leaguers were impressed.
