MUSEO
SORSOGON
A previously occupied century-old provincial jail and courtroom in the
province of Sorsogon has been turned into a museum that highlights the
area's rich history and culture. Chiz Escudero, the current provincial
governor, claimed he came up with the concept after noticing the
possibilities of the building's architectural style from the 1900s.
As the new prison was finished and the convicts were relocated in 2019,
Escudero stated he chose to build a new museum within the grounds of the
Sorsogon City capital compound. In 2019, the province administration
began renovations on the ancient structure, retaining the prison cells as
galleries to display Sorsogon's rich history and culture

Ten exhibits on the two-story museum will depict
important historical and cultural features of Sorsogon,
including how towns began in the province, its role in the
Philippine revolution, and the region's subsequent
American occupation. Original paintings created by
prisoners of the province jail, including a painting of the
Lady of Justice on the second level and Che Guevara, a
major communist figure in the Cuban Revolution, are
unique to Museo Sorsogon's exhibitions.
A 875-square-meter accessible amphitheater was created
at the back of the museum for events and stage
performances, in addition to the art museums. Souvenir
shop is available within the museum for guests to acquire
locally produced items. The museum has a café and a
coffee shop. Sorsogon's regional government has teamed
with the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) to allow
local businesses to showcase their goods at the museum as
"Made in Sorsogon" items.

KASANGGAYAHAN
FESTIVAL
KASANGGAYAHAN
FESTIVAL
The first Kasanggayahan Festival took place in October 1974, during the
administration of the late Governor Juan G. Frivaldo. It was the province of
Sorsogon's 80th anniversary as an independent province from Albay, which
it had previously been a part of the first Kasanggayahan Festival was held in
October 1974, during Gov. Juan G. Frivaldo's administration, to
commemorate Sorsogon's 80th anniversary as a province separate from
Albay. The year 1974 was especially significant for Sorsogon province
because it was the year the Sorsogon Amphitheater was completed in
preparation for the Kasanggayahan Festival's grand finale. Sorsogon's first
original amphitheater is situated between the Sorsogon National High
School and what is now Sorsogon State College campuses. The
Kasanggayahan Festival's official trade fair, exhibitions, and cultural
performances are all held at the Sorsogon Amphitheater. Kasanggayahan
Festival in Sorsogon was never held in 1975 due to several reasons. The
Kasanggayahan Festival was restored after two decades of no celebration of
the province's founding anniversary, and has since become an annual
province-wide activity. The Kasanggayahan Festival of Sorsogon is
officially recognized by the Department of Tourism as one of the
Philippines' annual festivals, with a variety of cultural, historical, religious,
agro-industrial, and economic activities showcasing Sorsogon's abundant
agricultural products and native arts and crafts, particularly those made
from the province's native Pili Tree.
Historical records ha shown that Sorsogon was detached from the Province
of Albay in October 1894, according to historical documents, and became an
autonomous province. This is why, in 1993, the Philippine Congress
established a legislation of local applicability establishing October 17th of
each year as a special public holiday in honor of the Province of Sorsogon's
centennial foundation anniversary. The Department of Tourism has
included the Kasanggayahan Festival of Sorsogon to its list of yearly
Philippine festivals. Kasanggayahan is an old Bikol word whose meaning
can be deduced from a brief verse written by Rev. Fr. Ofrasio, Jose O.:
"When the fields are green and the grains are golden; when the machines
work well and all besiness prosper; when the birds in the sky chirp freely,
and men on earth are peacefully happy; in Bikol, it is Kasanggayahan,
meaning, a life of prosperity".

PILI FESTIVAL
SORSOGON CITY
PILI FESTIVAL
The festival highlights Pili, a Bicol native crop that is
particularly rich in Sorsogon. The event intends to boost
knowledge of the pili's diverse economic applications and to
underline its value.
The festival's culmination is a street dance
performance in which participants demonstrate the
value of pili (as well as the many different kinds of
products that can be made from them). The street
dance attracts hundreds of onlookers and usually lasts
at least a week (June 19 to 29). The Pili Festival
commemorates Sorsogon City's patron saints, St. Paul
and Peter. Pili tree (and nut) are native to the province
and are used for a variety of useful and nutritional
purposes. The street dance, in which gorgeously
costumed dancers illustrate the multiple uses of the
tree, is the event's main attraction.
