HOW TO USE THIS
COMPETENCY BASED LEARNING MATERIALS (CBLM)

Welcome to the Module in Cleaning and Preparing Guest Room. This module
contains training materials and activities for you to complete.

The unit of competency “Clean and Prepare Guest Room” contains knowledge,
skills and attitudes required for Hotel and Restaurant General Service Provider. It is one
of the specialized modules at National Certificate level (NCII).

You are required to go through a series of learning activities in order to complete each
learning outcome of the module. In each learning outcome are Information Sheets and
Resources Sheets (Reference Materials for further reading to help you better understand
the required activities.) Follow these activities on your own and answer the self-check at the
end of each leaning outcome. You may remove a blank answer sheet at the end of each
module (or get one from your facilitator/trainer) to write your answers for each self-check. If
you have questions, don’t hesitate to ask your facilitator for assistance.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

You may already have some or most of the knowledge and skills covered in this learner’s
guide because you have:

• been working for some time
• already completed training in this area.

If you can demonstrate to your trainer that you are competent in a particular skill or
skills, talk to him/her about having them formally recognized so you don’t have to do the same
training again. If you have a qualification or Certificate of Competency from previous
training, show it to your trainer. If the skills you acquired are still current and relevant to the
unit/s of competency they may become part of the evidence you can present for RPL. If you
are not sure about the currency of your skills, discuss this with your trainer.

At the end of this module is a Learner’s Diary. Use this diary to record important
dates, jobs undertaken and other workplace events that will assist you in providing further
details to your trainer or assessor. A Record of Achievement is also provided for your
trainer to complete once you complete the module.

This module was prepared to help you achieve the required competency, in
Cleaning and Preparing Guest Room. This will be the source of information for you to
acquire knowledge and skills into his particular trade independently and at your own pace,
with minimum supervision or help from your instructor.

• Talk to your trainer and agree on how you will both organize the Training of this unit.
Read through the module carefully. It is divided into sections, which cover all the
skills, and knowledge you need to successfully complete this module.

• Most probably your trainer will also be your supervisor or manager. He/She is there
to support you and show you the correct way to do things.

• Your trainer will tell you about the important things you need to consider when you
are completing activities and it is important that you listen and take notes.

• You will be given plenty of opportunity to ask questions and practice on the job.
Make sure you practice your new skills during regular work shifts. This way you will
improve both your speed and memory and also your confidence.

• Talk to more experienced workmates and ask for their guidance.

• Use the self-check questions at the end of each section to test your own progress.

• When you are ready, ask your trainer to watch you perform the activities outlined in
this module.

• As you work through the activities, ask for written feedback on your progress. Your
trainer keeps feedback/pre-assessment reports for this reason. When you have
successfully completed each element, ask your trainer to mark on the reports that
you are ready for assessment.

• When you have completed this module (or several modules), and feel confident
that you have had sufficient practice, your trainer will arrange an appointment with
registered assessor to assess you. The results of your assessment will be
recorded in your Competency Achievement Record.

INTRODUCTION:

This module covers cleaning and preparing guest room according to industry standard.

LEARNING OUTCOMES:

1. Identify and explain function of different cleaning tools and materials.
2. Perform the correct procedures in cleaning guest room.
3. Perform standard procedure in cleaning guest bathroom.
4. Perform standard procedures in checking guest room.
5. Prepare and maintain requisition and reports.
6. Handles guest complaints.

FAMILIARIZATION WITH THE DIFFERENT CLEANING CHEMICALS

THE CLEANING CHEMICALS

1. All-Purpose Cleaner - applicable to all types of washable
surface.

Direction for Use:

a. To clean glass panels and mirrors.

Dilute one (1) part of all-purpose cleaner to 100 parts of water. Spray or
damp wipe. Rinse and dry with clean cloth.

b. To clean steel, rubber, fiberglass and formica

Dilute one (1) part of all-purpose cleaner to 75 parts of water. Spray or
damp wipe. Rinse and dry with clean cloth.

c. To clean painted walls, surfaces, floors and ceilings.

Dilute one (1) part of all-purpose cleaner to 50 parts of water. Spray,
damp wipe or mop. Rinse and dry with clean rag or mop.

Test areas to be serviced with dilutions. Stronger dilution may be
utilized to remove stubborn dirt and stains.

2. Wax Stripper or Remover - specifically formulated to loosen, break-up and
strip-off tough old waxes. Polymer floor finish sealer and build-ups from floor
surfaces.

Uses/Purposes:

a. To remove or strip-off water based emulsions, waxes.

Dilute one (1) part of wax stripper or remover to
12 parts of water.

b. To remove or strip-off polymer sealer/finish (complete wax) or heavy wax
build up.

Dilute one (1) part of wax stripper or remover to 4 parts of water.

c. For unusual stripping of wax build up on floor edges and corner.

Use pure concentrated wax stripper.

3. Air-freshener - (liquid or aerosol) ready-to-use or no dilution
needed; clears air of stale and musty odors.

4. Toiler Bowl Cleansers - cleans, deodorizes, and
disinfects toilet bowl and urinal bowl.

5. Disinfectant - for use in eliminating and preventing
the growth of disease and odor-causing germs and bacteria.

6. Metal Cleaners and Polishers - clean and polish in
one operation. Remove discoloration.

7. Drain Cleaners - speed up clogged drains in emergencies.
(Clog opener).

8. Cleansers - contain chlorine bleach that kills germs, scours heavily soiled areas.

9. Degreasers - use to remove grease, oil, dirt, carbon, inks, mildews,
soils, and waxes.

10. Carpet Shampoo - a special detergent for cleaning carpet and upholstery.

11. Emulsion Wax - a buffable wax for resilient floors (vinyl, linoleum, rubber, tile)
and for concrete floor and marbles.

12. Polymer Sealer - a non-buffable wax highly recommended for vinyl flooring.

13. Solvent Wax - kerosene-based wax highly recommended for wood flooring.

14. Paste Wax - for stone flooring, wood and resilient floors.

15. Glass Cleaner - removes grease and dirt, leaves
surface streak free and smoother.

16. Furniture Polish - cleans, waxes, polishes,
and protects the furniture surface.
Removes and repels dirt smudges and stains.

17. Hand Soap - a liquid antiseptic soap for washing hands.

18. Carpet Stain Remover - cuts through and dissolves stains and spots.

19. Marble Cleaners - make marble shine and discourage spots.

20. Oxalic Acid - a bleach used in fabric and cleaning marbles.

STANDARD GUEST ROOM ROUTINE CLEANING PROCEDURE

A. Standard Pre-Cleaning Procedures
1. Enter “Time In” in your worksheet.
2. Leave door wide open.
3. Position the cart for more convenient use
4. Turn-on master switch (to check whether lights are functioning properly. Be sure to
switch off aircon–depending upon Hotel’s policy.
5. Draw back curtains/draperies to allow light to come in the room. Open windows for
airing purposes. Hotel policy is the guiding factor here (i.e. back the curtain on both
sides and open the window).

B. Standard Cleaning Procedures of the Guest Room

1. Empty trash bin.

2. Wipe trash bins and put underliners if needed. Put waste bins in their proper places.

3. Put all dirty glasses and ashtrays in the bathroom, ready for washing. (Place them in
the wash basin.)

4. Remove all soiled linens and bring in clean ones. Place clean linens on top of chairs,
tables, luggage rack for later use.

5. Pour cleaning disinfectant solution into the toilet bowl to allow solution to work before
proceeding to bedroom cleaning.

6. Go back to bedroom and make the bed first to present a neat appearance to the
room in case the guest suddenly decides to go back to the room.

7. Do dusting procedures; use standard method in dusting.

8. Complete and replenish all supplies and amenities. Dusting procedures help in
checking for missing/lacking items including defects in the room.

9. Vacuum the bedroom and proceed to do the bathroom.

C. Standard Procedures for Cleaning the Bathroom

1. Thoroughly clean hand basin with disinfectant cleaning solution.
2. Soak in hot water and wash all dirty glasses. Allow to drip-dry.
3. Next clean ashtray. Set aside for drip-drying. Wipe properly.
4. Finish cleaning hand basin. Do not forget to clean pop-up. Wipe hand basin dry.

Close pop-up.
5. Clean mirrors.
6. Clean bath tub and shower walls, fixtures and shower curtains.
7. Clean toilet bowl in and out using a different cloth/sponge.

Do not use abrasive scouring pads as this damage porcelain finish of toilet bowl.
8. eplace both linens and amenities.
9. Clean bathroom flooring last, starting at the farthest end and finish at the door.
10. Leave bathroom doors slightly ajar to allow air to circulate and prevent odor

from forming.

D. Standard Post Cleaning Procedure

1. Make sure that everything is in order and that nothing was forgotten or overlooked in
the course of cleaning.

2. Enter “Time Out” on your worksheet.

Note:
Occupied room may take a little shorter time to clean especially if
guest is in the room.

CLEANING THE SHOWER CURTAIN

Shower curtain fabrics today are mildew-proof and
machine washable. Those most often used are made of
either a woven nylon or a non-absorbent, heavy-duty vinyl
that does not flat when the shower is turned on and has no
hems and seams. Both types are available in many
colors and designs.

Cleaning a Vinyl Shower Curtain

Shower curtains are usually a part of the bath when there is no bath partitions.

1. Things you need for Cleaning the Shower Curtain:

a. Bucket
b. Dry rag
c. Sponge
d. All-purpose cleaner

2. Steps in Cleaning the Shower Curtain:

a. In a bucket half full of warm water add two ounces of all-purpose cleaner.
b. Gather the bottom of the shower curtain and soak it into the bucket with

an all-purpose cleanser.
c. Using the sponge, remove completely soap scum that cling to the shower

curtain.
d. Wipe dry with rag.
e. Drape shower curtain outside the tub.

Note:
The half-bucket full of warm water and 2 ounces

all-purpose cleaner is enough to clean the whole bathroom.

CLEANING WASH BASIN

The wash basin usually matches the bath in color. It should be sufficiently large for
guests to perform activities such as brushing and washing the face without splashing water
at its surrounding area.

Most wash basins are fitted into marble, laminated or plastic tops, which served as
vanity unit. There should be soap-wells to hold soap.

Cleaning a Wash Basin Fitted Into Marble Top
Remember the cleansing solution you used in cleaning shower curtains? You can

use it for cleaning the wash basin if you can start working right away. If not, here are the
things that you need for the job.

1. Things you need:
a. Half bucket full of warm water with
2 ounces of cleaning solution.
b. Sponge
c. Dry rag

2. Follow These Steps:
a. Remove hair, fluff, etc. from waste, chain and overflow.
b. Clean basin and surroundings with sponge wrung in cleaning liquid, paying
particular attention to soap wells underneath and round the base of the top.
c. Rub up tops and dry basin until it shines.

CLEANING LAVATORY/TOILET

The lavatory/toilet sometimes called the water closet (WC) pan may be made of marble
and ceramic tiles obtainable in various color. The WC pan may be cantilevered and should
be of the fully symphonic type and should be deep enough including the cistern.

Among the areas found in the bathroom, the lavatory needs different kind of
treatment. It has to be cleaned, sanitized and deodorized with toilet cleaners.

1. Use the appropriate toilet cleaner.

Toilet cleaners are crystalline, powdered or liquid and they rely on their acid content to
clean and keep the toilet bowl hygienic. It is the acid that removes metal stain e.g. lime
scale,. For ease in application, liquid toilet cleanser is preferable although you need to be
careful when you use it because the concentration may cause damage to the surface of the
pan/bowl.

2. Assemble your tools to facilitate cleaning.

You need to assemble the following tools, supplies and chemicals in maid’s caddy
before you can start cleaning the lavatory.

a. Maid’s caddy
b. Toilet cleanser
c. Dry towels, cloth
d. Rubber brush with container
e. Rubber glows (optional)
f. Bucket with warm water and 2 ounces of cleaning solution

(remember the one you have mixed for cleaning the shower curtain).

3. Clean the lavatory.

Steps in Cleaning the Lavatory

a. Flush the lavatory.

After the first flush:
Sprinkle lavatory cleanser around inside of bowl.
Leave cleanser to work for as long as possible.

b. Wash outside of pedestal, both side of seat and lid and cistern disinfectant water.
Use part of the solution.

c. Buff up with a soft dry cloth. Brush inside of bowl.
d. Wipe around underside of surface rim of bowl.
e. Flush the lavatory.
f. Check for maintenance, loose seat and cover, flush, water running, toilet not

blocked, flush working.

CLEANING BATHTUB AND SHOWER ROOM

Baths come in various colors with soap dishes, grip handles and sometimes even
with anti-slip devices. Baths are frequently 5 1/2 to 6 ft. long by 2 1/2 ft. wide but vary in
depth. There should be ample toe space of the bottom of the side panel to prevent scratch-
ing and for easier cleaning.

Most bathrooms have showers sited over the bath, which are thermostatically con-
trolled in order to prevent scalding. A soap container on the wall and a shower screen and
curtain of a suitable length to hang well inside the bath shower is provided.

A. CLEANING A BATHTUB WITH SHOWER

1. Prepare the following tools:

a. Cleaning agent (some solution you mixed earlier in cleaning the shower
curtain)

b. Bath sponge
c. Clean discarded towels/cloth
d. Sprayer/Applicator

2. Steps in Cleaning a Bathtub with Shower:

a. Remove all soap and guest toiletries. Fill bath quarter full of hand-hot water,
apply cleaning agent and with bath.

b. Pay particular attention to chain an stopper, chrome fittings, outside of bath
and shower curtain.

c. Rinse all areas.
d. Dry the bath systematically with an old clean discarded towel. Check for

maintenance dripping taps, loose bath handles, chain and stopper attached
to bath, loose tiles, and water draining efficiently.

B. CLEANING A SHOWER ROOM

More and more hotels are now installing shower rooms as feature in the bathroom.
The walls may either be tiles or marble like the walls of the bathtubs. Hotels that can afford to
include a shower room often have installed sliding shower doors or one that swings on a
hinge for easy access and cleaning. This shower door may be made of glass or plastic
panels.

The door installed on a shower room should be cleaned daily to prevent spotting or
soap build up. Under the circumstances, regardless of the build up, a scour pad, wire brush
or abrasive should be used on the glass, aluminum rails or plastic panels.

1. Prepare the following materials:

Again like in the other areas of the bathroom you need the following supplies,
tools and materials.

a. Cleaning agent (part of the solution you prepared for the cleaning of the shower
curtain)

b. Bath sponge
c. Clean discarded towels/cloth
d. Sprayer/Applicator

2. Steps in Cleaning the Shower Room

a. Remove all soaps and guest toiletries.
b. Spray/Apply cleaning agent with a bath sponge on tiles/marble walls.

Work systematically from top to bottom with an overlapping circular motion.
c. Wash and clean the showerhead and other faucet fixtures.
d. Rinse all the areas thoroughly.
e. Dry the walls, showerhead and fixture systematically with an old towel.
f. Dry the shower room floor starting from the farthest end toward the door.
g. Check for maintenance-dripping showerhead, loose faucet knob/handle,

loose tiles, water draining efficiently.

C. CLEANING BATHROOM FLOORS

Bathroom floors are made of the same materials as the bathroom walls, which is
either marble or tile.

You are now on the last leg of cleaning of the bathroom. You do not need additional
tools, supplies and materials here unless you prefer to use a dry mop rather than clean dis-
carded towels/cloth.

Procedure:

1. Wash marble/tile floor using the remaining solution in the bucket.

2. Dry mop or dry with clean discarded towel cloth starting from the farthest end of the
bathroom toward the door.

INSPECTION OF GUEST ROOMS

A. Pre-inspection Standard Procedures
1. Have a checklist form on hand and a pen to take note of significant items needing
replacement, follow-up, or engineering service.

2. Activate the doorbell to check if there is anyone inside the room.

3. Turn on the lights and pull aside the curtains to ensure sufficient light. (Turn off the
lights as soon as lighting of the room from the open curtains is enough, for energy
conservation.)

B. Inspection of Guest Room

1. Start inspection clockwise or counterclockwise. Move from one item to the nearest
one so as not to miss anything.

2. Check the door frame, door knob, lockset, and door bolt for dust, and if they are in
good condition.

3. Check the closet door railing, shelves, micro switch, and bumpers for dust or for any
damage/defects needed for servicing.

4. Check the closet light to see if it is working, on when the closet door is opened, off
when the door is closed.

5. Check for the correct number of hangers. See to it that they are free from dust all
hooks facing one direction.

6. Check the shoehorn hook inside the closet with the shoe cloth and the shoehorn
hanging on it.

7. Check the slippers and the extra pillow inside the closet.

of the ashtray.

19. Check the F&B Security Tent Card. Reading materials underneath the coffee table
should be free from writing marks.

20. Check the easy chairs for stains, tear or dust. Floor lamp bulbs should have the
correct wattage and shades free from stains and dust.

21. Check the night table and the light switches. Check the radio and digital clock for
correct time. Night table lamps should have the correct wattage. Bulbs should be
free from dust. Shade of lamps should be stain and dust free.

1. Daily room attendant reports are prepared in accordance with the set standards.
2. Room status are maintained and observed according to industry standards.
3. Linen consumptions are reported and noted according to RA’s report.
4. Rooms supplies and materials are requested in accordance with RA’s requisition

form.
5. Lost and found items are reported to concerned department in accordance with

the SOP.
