Topic 1:
At the end on this unit, you should be able to:
Sub-Topic 1 1. Define switches
2. Know the different types of switches and uses
3. Follow steps in installing lighting fixture switches
Light Switch-In building wiring, light switches are installed at
convenient locations to control lighting and occasionally other circuits. By
use of multiple-pole switches, multi-way switching control of a lamp can
be obtained from two or more locations, such as the ends of a corridor or
stairwell.
Switches
Switch is an electrical component that can "make" or "break" an
electrical circuit. Like receptacles, switches are marked with the
maximum voltage and amperage (rated current and voltage), along with
the type of wire to be used.
Types of Switches, Purpose and Application
1. Single-pole, single-throw
(SPST) switch is as simple
as it gets. It’s got one
output and one input. The
switch will either be closed
or completely
disconnected. SPSTs are
perfect for on-off switching.
2. Duplex Switch/ Two Gang
Switch are basically two
SPST switches, which can
control two separate
circuits.
Topic 2 3. Triplex Switch/ Three
Gang Switch are basically
three SPST switches,
which can control three
separate circuits
4. Three Way Switch is an
electric switch that has
three terminals; used to
control a circuit from two
different locations. Three-
way switches are normally
used at the tops and
bottoms of stairways to
control the light from either
location.
5. Four Way Switch is an
electric switch employed in
house wiring, that makes it
possible to turn a light on
or off at three or more
locations. A four-way switch
may be used in conjunction
with two three-way
switches to control a device
from three locations.
Installation of Switches
Steps/Procedures:
1. Prepare a single line diagram based on the layout plan, indicating the
number of wires per line.
2. Cable pulling based on the single line diagram.
3. Strip the insulator of the wire 10mm-13mm from its tip.
4. Connect lighting switches by referring on the wiring diagram
a. For single switch
b. For duplex / two gang
switches
c. For triplex / two gang
switches
d. For three-way switch
e. For four-way switch
SUB-TOPIC 2.1 How to wire Single Pole Single Throw Switch to control a light bulb
SUB-TOPIC 2.2
Step / Procedures:
1. Secure and verify the power
source, it should be de-
energized before any
electrical work activity.
2. Conduct visual checking,
esting of terminal
specifications and marking of
a single switch according to
the installation.
3. Strip the tip of the wire/s about
10mm-13mm length.
4. Connect the Line 2 (Live wire)
to the single switch intended
for live wire.
5. Connect the single switch to
the light bulb receptacle
terminal through the middle
wire.
6. Then, connect the Line 2
(neutral wire) to another light
bulb receptacle
How to wire Three way Switch to control a light bulb
For a three way switch, commonly used to control the light bulb in two
locations.
Step / Procedures
1. Secure and verify the power
SUB-TOPIC 2.3 source, it should be de-
energized before any
electrical work activity.
2. Conduct visual checking,
testing of terminal,
specifications and marking of
the two three way switch
according to the installation.
3. Strip the tip of the wire/s
about 10mm-13mm length.
4. Connect the Line 2 (Live wire)
to the first three way switch
common terminal.
5. Connect the first three way
switch traveler terminal to the
second three way switch
traveler terminal through
traveler wire.
6. Connect the 2nd three way
switch common terminal to
the light bulb receptacle
terminal through middle wire.
7. Then, connect the Line 2
(neutral wire) to the other
light bulb receptacle terminal.
How to wire Four way Switch to control a light bulb
For Four Way Switch, commonly used to control the light bulb in 3 or
more locations accompanied by 2 – three way switches being endpoints.
Step / Procedures
1. Secure and verify the power
source, it should be de-
energized before any
electrical work activity.
2. Conduct visual checking,
testing of terminal,
specifications and marking of
the four way switch according
to the installation.
3. Strip the tip of the wire/s
about 10mm-13mm length.
4. Connect the Line 2 (Live
wire) to the first three way
switch common terminal.
5. Connect the two traveler
terminals of the 1st three way
switch to the 1st two terminal
of four way switch through
traveler wire/s.
6. Connect the 2nd two terminal
of four way switch to the two
traveler terminal of the 2nd
three way switch through
traveler wire/s.
7. Connect the common
terminal of the 2nd three way
switch to the light bulb
receptacle terminal through
middle wire.
8. Then, connect the Line 2
(neutral wire) to the other
light bulb receptacle terminal.
