The CALL of the Timberwolf - November 2019

Marian Chaney and Janet Flores: The Gift of Fear
Violent acts are not as random or unpredictable as one might
believe. Gavin de Becker, a national expert on violent be-
havior, writes about how to spot signs of danger and protect
yourself and those you love. At this workshop attendees
learned new ways to spot danger signals others may miss.
They also sharpened their ability to use their intuition and
fear together to stay safe and, like every animal in nature,
recognize the warnings signs around them.

Irene Briggs: Overcoming the fear of ›
Cultural Identity
During Irene’s junior year in high
school, she was told by a counselor
that she wasn’t college material. And
that she wasn’t smart enough to go to
college because she was Mexican and
just needed to graduate, get married
and have children. She was able to
meet that challenge and overcome
her fears and earn a college degree.
Her story demonstrates to anyone that
self-limits themselves that they too can
overcome those limitations and pursue
their dreams.

Cory Colby: Fear of Being All Alone
For someone, especially an educator, who feels like they are the
only one moving forward in innovative ways or who believes that
they have a passion that isn’t shared by anyone else around them,
the fear of being all alone can be overwhelming. This workshop
explored how those who feel isolated in their professional environ-
ments can find, and even create, shared communities online and
be empowered to “go rogue” in their professional growth.

The CALL of the Timberwolf - November 2019

Dr. Nutt’s multi-layered approach brings together the ideas and views of four working ›
groups. The groups are initially tasked with investigating beliefs students should hold
about themselves, colleges and what it takes to be successful in college. One of the
more critical elements: understanding the current mindset of students and the college’s
faculty and staff. Those recommendation will lead to the adoption of Strategic Experi-
ence Management© approach at LSC-Tomball. “Rather than just manage enrollment,”
Dr. Nutt says, “We will manage the experience.”

A steering committee comprised
of faculty, staff and administrators
will guide the structured process
and implementation.
