Starting out as a Principal Surveyor and founder of the Greek exclusive Office in 1978, he was promoted to Senior Principal for the Eastern Mediterranean. In 1996, he became Division Manager of the Mediterranean – Black Sea, Middle East & Africa Areas, as well as a Member of the executive board of the Society. He remains a Member of the DNV National Committee, as well as a member of the Lloyd’s Register Technical Committee to this day. He graduated from the Merchant Naval Academy of Oinousses / Chios, he joined Livanos Brothers, rising to the rank of Chief Officer. He moved to Hannover, Germany where he studied Marine Engineering, and was offered a position at the University as an Assistant Lecturer for the Institute for Ship Structures. (Suppliers and Contractors of Shipbuilding & Industrial Equipment), Navatrade S.A. (Ship Brokers) and Genbulk (Charterers). The Group was founded and owned by the late Michalis Ghiokas, George Sklavounos and Byron Tomazos. The Company was originally engaged in the field of Chartering services acting as a Broker, while in 1973 interests related to the Founders acquired the first two (2) vessels and assigned the technical Management to Navarone. In 1989 they consensually decided to separate their joint activities and ownership and Michalis Ghiokas became the sole owner of Navarone, George Sklavounos of Navatrade and Genbulk and Byron Tomazos of Technava, however the three individuals continued to cooperate closely and remained exemplary friends through the years. Year 1994 was a milestone in the history of the company. At that time, the shipping market was severely shaken, due to the dramatic increase in the operating costs of ships and the newly introduced ISM code, which imposed new obligations to shipowners. Michalis Ghiokas followed by his son Orestis entered into a strategic relationship with Canadian Forest Navigation, one of the leading cargo operators in Canadian waters and worldwide specialized in the trade of Great Lakes and the St. Lawrence Seaway. Fifty (50) years after its establishment Navarone has thrived not only to survive but to remain a successfully active shipping company in the global shipping industry. Operating and headquartered in Athens, Navarone is among the leading shipping companies renowned for the quality of services offered to their Customers and strong commitment to sustainable, ethical and transparent business practices. The Company operates a large, modern fleet of panamax, handymax / supramax and handy-sized bulkers with the highest safety and quality standards. Trading in the Great Lakes, St. Lawrence ports and the Baltic Sea for more than 20 years has offered the Company a remarkable expertise in icetrading. The Company employs Seafarers from Manning Agents in Ukraine, either wholly owned or working exclusively for Navarone in order to effectively control the entire manning process. Company’s Officials are members to DNV Technical Committee and Owners’ Committee. The successful run of the company is today exclusively in the good hands of the son of Michalis, Orestis Ghiokas.
