About
Francisco Gouveia was born in Lisbon in the late thirties in a family with musical traditions. His father played several instruments and even belonged to a few Philharmonic Bands. At the age of 16 for family encouragement he began to learn music and at the age of twenty belonged to the band Almadense Incadense where he played alto saxophone.

Then he moved to the clarinet and played in the Band of the Philharmonic Society Students of Apollo. By that time he began to compose assiduously and in 1960 he recorded his first songs in the Portuguese Society of Authors. Resolves to take the course of accordionist, instrument that came to influence all his future life. He began by being a musician accompanying several renowned artists such as Maria Amélia Canossa, Tristão da Silva and Maria de Lurdes Resende.
In one of his trips to Porto he has the opportunity to compose and accompany the singer Claudio José and it is in this city that he records his first album for the Factory of Discs Radio Triunfo.

In 1962 is contacted to enter the formation of a new set of Ermesinde: the Conjunto Maria Albertina. "Avé-Maria do Coração" was the great success of its authorship recorded by the collective of which it was still part.
But Francisco Gouveia wished to have his own Ensemble, a fact that happened even in the early sixties. The first 45rpm came out on the label Melodia with the designation of Typical Set Francisco Gouveia and in a formation that was always constant. For some years the group toured the country acting from the Tipica House to the Recreational Coliseum reaching a lot of popularity. They even got hired by the famed Hotel Estoril Sol to cheer up and welcome the tourists who visited us.

The first internationalization took place in 1966 with the invitation to perform at the Festival of Aranda do Douro and with success record for the Spanish publisher Marfer. The following year they will perform for the first time for the Portuguese community based in New Bedford, USA. In 1970 they edited the controversial record "Song of a Soldier" by the label Alvorada that breaks records of the group with the sales to reach the 300 thousand units. But the current regime does not approve the content of the letter suspending its commercialization and radio passage.

In 1971 they returned again to the United States of America and also to Canada acting for the Portuguese communities. It is in this country that the Conjunto Francisco Gouveia is definitively established in 1972. The label Gouveia Records appears that is successfully editing the most recent records in the new continent.

The Ensemble had a special affection for the Azorean community, which translated into many songs with reference to the Azores. And they were not often confused as island artists.
The events of April 25, 1974, seen by those who were emigrated, were also the most focused and led the Francisco Gouveia Ensemble to be one of the most influential groups in Portuguese popular music.
