What I do is not up to you: A Rhetorical Analysis of “Wonder Woman”

Honors Undergraduate Research Day Houston, TX, | Fall 2018

The 2017 release of W onder Woman was the first female led superhero movie released from either the

Marvel or DC cinematic universes. This research seeks to analyze W onder Woman through a feminist

lens. Feminist and film scholars have varied understandings of exactly what characterizes “feminist

films.” After researching feminism in film and applying it to Wonder Woman, it was found that although

the film does portray a strong feminist message throughout the majority of the movie, this message was

contradicted in a sequence near the end where it is portrayed that Wonder Woman’s romantic

involvement was essential for her character transformation and success in defeating her enemy. This

symbolizes Hollywood’s partial embrace of feminist topics and portrayals of female characters, which is

possibly due to the notion that feminism does not market well to audiences.
