Program
Sakura Science Program is an 3. To collaborate the
exchange program in providing a platform in science and technology
terms of exchanging the knowledge in the
field of science and technology for students research with JMA which
and researcher. Japan-Asia: Exchange aligned with “Sustainable
Program in Science 2020 was held on 20th–
27th January 2020 that has been organized River-Based Tourism
by Japan-Malaysian Association (JMA) and Product Development”
Sakura Science Plan. Besides that, this
program has been subsidized by Japan
Science and Technology Agency (JST).
JMA has proposed to conduct a
student program exchange with International
Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM), Pagoh
Campus. Therefore, the theme of this
program is “Sustainable River-Based
Tourism Product Development” which in
line with the Flagship Project of Kulliyyah
of Languages and Management (KLM)
entitled “Sustainable Biosphere” with the
main project of “The Muara: A Living River
Lab in Muar”.
The objectives of this program are:
1. To increase knowledge while
broaden students understand about
the science and technology practices
in Japan towards achieving
ecosystem sustainability.
2. To foster awareness among students
on preservation and conservation
effort in ecosystem, culture, and
society through the modern
industrialization approach.

The Japan-Asia: Exchange Program in The Map of Japan
Science 2020 was held in Fukuoka Prefecture
of Japan. Fukuoka Prefecture is a prefecture of
Japan that located on the Kyushu Island which
also known as the biggest capital and city of
Kyushu. Fukuoka Prefecture is located at the
northernmost point of Kyushu on the Kanmon
Straits, which connecting the Tsushima Strait
and Seto Inland Sea across from Yamaguchi
Prefecture on the island of Honshu and extends
south towards the Ariake Sea.
Therefore, there were 13 location of
attractions that have been visited along this
program. There are 4 accommodations that
have been registered for the participants
throughout the program for 7 days. This is to
facilitate the movement of participants to the
program venues

Kyushu University
“ Kyushu University was founded in Fukuoka in 1911 as
the 4th Imperial University. Kyushu University has established
as a leader in education and research in Japan and throughout
the world . Currently, it has a total student population of 18,799,

boasts roughly 2,300 full-time members. Comprehensive in its

During our visit to this
university, we were given a
lecture about Eco-Disaster Risk
Reduction (Eco-DRR), which is
the sustainable management,
conservation and restoration of
ecosystem in order to reduce the
risk of disaster with the aim to
have a sustainable development.
Besides, the participants also
receive new input on chronology
and facts on the flood happened in
Chikugo River.
The Chikugo River estuary
is the largest estuary in the Ariake
Sea in terms of both catchment
area. The tidal reach extends to
the Chikugo Weir 23 km
upstream from the river mouth.
Strong tidal currents completely
mix the water column during
spring tides, whereas partial
stratification occurs during neap
tides.

“ Fukuoka University’s study abroad system is divided into
three namely “Student Exchange”, “Study Abroad” and “Certified
Study Abroad”. It is very interesting to those want to further studying
abroad. Fukuoka University’s Medium and Long-term Plans (Phase
1, 2020 to 2024) consist of five vital aspects namely:
1. Providing education, research, and healthcare that meet the
requirements of the era and society
2. Supporting advanced, high-level research
3. Nurturing a global perspective through close relations with other
nations, especially in East Asia
4. Helping vitalize and develop Fukuoka and the surrounding
region

that characterizes our times and strengthening the University’s

Visiting Yufuin 03
Sightseeing Activity
“Yufuin is a famous onsen town located in Yufu, Oita
Prefecture. Close to Beppu, this tranquil town is blessed with
naturally-flowing water and boasts mesmerizing scenery with Mt.
Yufu surrounded by peaceful fields.
Yufuin is accessible from Hakata Station in Fukuoka, making it an
ideal day trip destination. In addition to its great location and onsen,
there are cafes, restaurants, and other facilities that cater to a wide
variety of travelers. This article introduces places where visitors can
enjoy food, museums, and other entertainment in Yufuin.

During the sightseeing in Yufuin,
we were exposed to different tourism
destinations there such as Kirinko Lake,
Hotarumi Bashi Bridge Tenso Shrine,
Yunotsubo Road and Hotel Tamanoyu. All
of these places portrayed different tourism
product and resources hence have the
potential the be developed into specific
type of tourism since the tour guide did
mentioned this place are divided into three
zones which are industry, tourism and
agriculture. Rather than sightseeing, tourist
who visited Yufuin can visit the shrine for
religious purpose and watch fireflies at
Hotarumi Bashi Bridge.

Inspection of Damaged Area 04
Asakura
“It was reported that in 2017, heavy rain causes flooding,
damage and death in Japan. Asakura City, Fukuoka prefecture is one
of the parts of southern Japan that effected by this natural disaster.
This tragedy reported to have killed at least 16 people and left
hundreds stranded as the torrents swept away roads, houses, and
destroyed schools. Thus, local residents and rescue workers take
part in search operations for missing people in flood area in
Asakura.

In Asakura, we visited Besides, students also visited
Terauchi Dam along with the

“The Chikugo River Lift Bridge symbolized Morodomi
town in Saga City, spans the biggest river in Kyushu, Chikugo
River, and known as one of the moveable life railway bridges in the
world. Before the bridge was built, the locals were trying to find a
solution to build a railway bridge to allow trains to cross the wide
river, with a drastic difference in water level between high and low
tide, while not hindering the passage of large vessels, which
frequently travelled on Chikugo River.

Visiting Kurume City 08
Water Supply and Sewage System
“Kurume City was introduced as “sister city”, friendship town,
and well-known as honorary citizen of city. It is located at northern
part, Southwest Fukuoka of Kyushu, and Motoichi is to distance of
about 40 kilometers from Fukuoka-shi that is metropolis of Kyushu.
City limits show long shape to 32.27 kilometers of east and west, north
and south 15.99 kilometers and east and west, and administrative area is
229.96 square kilometers. In addition, neighborhood, national highway
of five Route 3 others go to crosspoint of Kyushu Expressway and Oita,
Nagasaki Expressway in central city in the southern part of the
prefecture, and it is in strategic point of traffic.

Saga University
“Saga University is a comprehensive national university
formed by the integration of the former Saga University and Saga
Medical School. It consists of six faculties namely Education, Art
and Regional Design, Economics, Medicine, Science and
Engineering and Agriculture. Graduates also have opportunity to
proceed to master’s courses at the Graduate School of Regional
Design and Agriculture. There are many program for international
students such as exchange program, degree seeking program, short-
and term program.

offered there. Surprisingly, the
participants managed to meet four
Malaysian students who are pursuing the
Bachelor Degree there and they grabbed
the chances to know each other and talk
more about the university. Furthermore,
we also visited Saga University Art
Museum (SUAM) that exhibited various
kind of arts by the students.

Yanagawa Village
“Yanagawa River cruise associate the 4 km stretch of river
in the water city of Yanagawa has been designated a National Site
of Scenic Beauty. Enjoy a relaxing time along the river in the

blossoms and irises in the spring, illuminated boats in the summer,

Bridge. In Yanagawa river, the
participants able to experiencing
river cruise along the river while
enjoying the outstanding scenery.
The river cruise is still applying
the traditional version whereby
there will be a man who
controlling the wooden boat with
the passenger in it. Besides, a visit
to Chikugo River Lift Bridge
enable the participants to
understand the history of the
establishment and the significant
of its design.

the frames for collecting nori rise from the tidal flat as backlit
silhouettes. With the nori frames and the red sky and dark gray

and you can see a beautiful landscape..
