What kind of teacher
would you like to be?
A teacher is a famous profession or formally we called
them as an educator. This is because teachers help
students to acquire virtue, competence, and knowledge that
can shape us to be better human beings. They also play
important role in building the students with manners and
showing them the path to success. They are such a
blessing from God to the student. With that, parents have to
believe in the teachers’ ability in teaching their children.
This is because they can teach the students very well as
they have all those skills and experience before being a
teacher. In addition, they have professional qualifications
from universities or colleges like Institut Pendidikan Guru.
The point here is, what kind of teacher would I like to be?
1
First and foremost, I will be a professional educator who
will be professional when instructing students in school or
any platform. We are all aware that the COVID-19
Pandemic has forced school closure in our country. In
addition, distance learning was implemented to ensure that
education was not disrupted. We coined the term ‘new
norm’ since we have to follow the Movement Control Order
(MCO) in order to mitigate the COVID-19 spread in
Malaysia. As a teacher, to live in this new norm, I will be
professional and follow the rules as long as I can teach the
students even though it is online. For example, I will use
applications like Zoom Meeting, and Google Meet for the
class session and the tutorial or homework, I will upload the
task in the Google Classroom. There is no doubt that this is
a fact that we all have to face as everyone is busy chasing
after their goals. By being a professional teacher which I
can teach the students in any situation, it can prove to the
students and also the parents that I have to teach their
children.
2
The next thing is I will be a knowledgeable teacher. When
I have confidence, I can teach the students with high-
knowledgeable information and experience. I will show them
that I can deliver any information like all the information is
already in my head without looking for any books in the
class. For example, when the students ask me a question
regarding the topic learned, I can answer the question
without confusing them. It can show that I am able to make
them clear with my explanation with some examples which is
it can strengthen the answer. Plus, when I answer the
question confidently, the students will believe and put trust in
me. In addition, I need to show that I love my passion and
the subject that I teach them like Mathematic or Bahasa
Melayu so that they can feel the love from me as a teacher.
The famous Brazilian author, Paulo Coelho’s quote “What is
teacher? I’ll tell you, it is not someone who teaches
something, but someone who inspires the student to give her
best in order to discover what she already know” inspires us
to adore the meaning of a teacher. We can see that the
teachers need to show that they have high-knowledgeable
information in order to demonstrate all those information to
the students.
3
Furthermore, I would like to be a loving teacher.
“Teachers have three loves: love of learning, love of
learners, and the love of bringing the first two loves
together” is a qoute by Scott Hayden. I inspired by this
quote which is it shows that teachers have a loving attitude
either towards students and their passion which is teaching.
Being a loving teacher, we can build a strong relationship
among the teachers and the students. In addition, a book
that was written by Dr. Gerry Nolan which is ‘Loving
Teachers’, calls all teachers to love their students. For
instance, I will show that I love my students by praising
them when they do good things, reward them if they get
good results in the examination, or anything that can I can
do to show that I appreciate their effort or struggle to
achieve good things. With that, my students will feel the
love from me. Not only that, being a loving teacher also can
make the students comfortable with me. They will treat me
like I am their mother at school. Plus, I love to surround
myself with pupils.
4
Last but not least, I will be an understanding teacher.
For example, if my students did not finish the task given by
me, I will not scold them because at least, they show their
efforts to finish the task but maybe they do not have
enough time to complete them. This is because the
students may bet tend to spend their weekends with their
families by going on a family trips or maybe they have
family problems. A quote by Nicolas Cage, tell that
‘Understanding is deeper than knowledge. There are many
people who know you, but very few who understand you’.
This quote is right because as a teacher, we need to be a
person who can understand our students mentally and
physically. By giving support to them, it will help them from
being stressed with their problems regarding the task given
by the teacher or any problem that they need to face. As an
understanding teacher, I will accept the students’ view. For
example, if they want me to change my teaching style, they
just have to tell the truth and give some ideas on what kind
of teaching style they wanted me to apply for our class
session.
5
In conclusion, if I were given the chance to be a
teacher, I will do my best and try harder in order to
achieve my target. Being a teacher is not easy for me
because they need to teach a good lesson to the
student and all those information, they will remember
and apply in their daily life. For example, if we are
exposed to the students to good habits like do not use
harsh words during the class, they will follow and
remember everything that the teacher teaches them. It
is proven that teacher is role model who influences
youth growth development. That is why I want to be a
teacher which professional, has high knowledge,
loving, and also understanding in order to make the
student trust me and also be comfortable learning with
me. I hope students out there appreciate their teachers
who did their best teaching them.
