The Birch Forest

A fun, entertaining, silly story that will have you turning the pages.

The Birch Forest : Written by: Callie Andrews(

It was a good day for walking in the great big birch forest. There were lush, tall birch trees with bright green leaves. The trees gently swished in the light breeze. The grass was bright green, and many bushes were around. I was bored, so I came here. Spring is a boring season for me, so I come to the forest many, many times. A distinctly bright green birch tree’s roots bulged out and made a perfect seat. It was relatively quiet, and for a quite brief moment, I wondered why. I didn’t know, so I just dropped the subject.

I started thinking about my annoying brother. I usually come here because I’m bored, but today it was because my brother was aggravating me. Today, we were eating breakfast, and believe it or not, he crushed my plate into pieces! Along with my breakfast! Syrup was flying everywhere, and it was a giant, chaotic mess. I was so mad I exploded. Even worse, he blamed it on me and my mom believed him! So, steaming mad, I tore my way here. I got more relaxed as I got deeper into the forest.

All of a sudden, I snap back into focus. Was I daydreaming? I didn’t notice at all. All of a sudden, a raspberry bush about two yards away from me started trembling. Immediately, I started thinking, bear! Wolf! Skunk! Dinosaur…. Wait. Hang on a second. The rustling isn’t loud enough to be a dinosaur by far. Besides, they’re extinct. The bush started shaking a whole heap more. I inched away. I was starting to get scared now. It was like it had become a dark green monster! Some of the raspberries on the bush fell with a soft plunk. I was terrified by now.

Without warning, A furry, black nose popped out. Then a light brown face with small, dark, soft eyes. Then, the rest of the body rolled out in a somersault. I belly laughed. Me, scared of almost nothing, just about lost my marbles because of a harmless, tiny hedgehog! I shook my head. All of a sudden, The hedgehog said, “Hey! Why are you laughing at me?” I responded, “Oh, sorry, I didn’t mean to offen- AHHHH!” I was so scared I could have fainted. “Am I still daydreaming?”

The hedgehog said, “Nope. Follow me, I have something to show you.” I said, “Well, if I’m crazy enough to talk to a hedgehog, what have I got to lose?” The hedgehog said, “Yup!” He nodded his head as he said this. Once we had walked a good amount, there was a fairly large hill. The hedgehog ambled up the hill. He was going pretty fast. I followed it, watching its light brown spikes bounce gently.

“Well, come on,” He said. “Walk faster!” When we got to the top of the bright green hill, the hedgehog said, “Well, bye! I think your dad might be a little angry.” I said, “Huh?” My dad wasn’t even there. I had asked for permission to go before I actually came to the birch forest. The hedgehog floated up into the clouds. I was so confused. I woke up to someone shaking me, away from birch forest. “Hey! I can’t believe you’re still in bed!” Dad said. “You're ten minutes late!” I thought out loud, “Oh no!” The End
