Here we describe an action in progress in the past so we use the : past progressive tense: To be in the simple past ( was/were) + verb + ing They were walking in the countryside. They were having a picnic. If two actions happen in the past we put the action that starts first in the past progressive tense and the second action ( that interrupts the first one ) in the simple past. Example: I was listening to music and doing my homework when it started to rain. Everybody was looking at him especially that young girl, I think that she fell in love with him. Many people were practising their favourite activities but I can’t forget that old couple that was sitting on a bench. They looked still deeply in love despite their age.
