My Character
Scout (Jean Louise) Finch
In the book TKAM Scout is a young child who likes to ask a lot of questions but she is allowed to ask a lot of
these questions because she is a child. She likes to observe everything that is around her, but the downside of that is, is
that she doesn’t understand everything that is going on around her. Scout has a unique personality. She is a little girl
who wants to get involved with the bigger things that are going on in life. She doesn’t like being left out of things or
treated like she doesn’t know anything. But you still have to look at the fact that the young lady version is telling the
story of the little tom boy she once was.
The author of TKAM, Harper Lee describes Scout in many different ways which gives her an unusual and
unique personality for a girl her age in the book. Lee said that Scout was “an unusual little girl, in both her own
qualities and in her social position.” For Scouts age she is unusually smart (which means she could read before she
started school), unusually confident (she fought boys with no fear), unusually thoughtful (though about the evil of
mankind and the essential goodness, and unusual goodness (she always came with good intentions). She lived in the
prim and proper Southern side of Maycomb and she was the total opposite, she was a tomboy.
Scout stands up for herself all throughout the book, she speaks her mind even though she is young and doesn’t know
better.
Why I picked the theme individuality?
I picked the theme individuality because I think it is very important to have. In my personal opinion Scout did a
good job by showing individuality, she was who she wanted to be even though she was young. I think that if she wasn’t
in the book it wouldn’t be as good as it was. I can relate to her in some of the things she did and in some of the ways
she acted. I have always heard that if you want to be liked by anyone to be yourself and show who you really are not
who they want you to be. I would rather be myself and have one friend than be something I’m not and have to act
everyday.
Scout’s Individuality
First Artifact
One thing that shows her individuality is what she wore in the book. Scout wears overalls and when she wears
them which is everyday because that is all she wears, it is showing her independence and what she is comfortable in.
Scout also says that she can’t do anything in a dress. She walks by Boo Radley’s house and finds 2 soap figures
carved as Jem and herself. Scout says “ I pulled out two small images carved in soap. One was the figure of a boy, the
other wore a crude dress.” (chap. 7 pg 59) Boo Radley obviously didn’t look at Scout the way she was, even though
he knew what she looked like and how she dressed.
Second Artifact
Scout’s attitude gets her in trouble a lot throughout the whole book. She does not like people saying bad things
about her family definitely, Dill, or herself. She sticks up for Atticus in chapter 9 starting on page 83. She does not
like what Francis says about Atticus. Francis says “He’s nothin’ but a nigger-lover!” (pg 83) Scout responds to him
saying “He is not! I don’t know what you’re talkin’ about, but you better cut it out this red hot minute!” She punches
him in his mouth in his front teeth. (pg 84) It says on page 84 “ This time, I split my knuckle to the bone on his
front teeth. My left impaired, I sailed in with my right, but not for long. Uncle Jack pinned my arms to my sides and
said, “Stand still!” With her standing up for other people that just shows how different her personality is, which is
her being her unique self. She also stands up for Dill on page 82 when she is arguing with Francis about how Dill’s
living situation is.
Third Artifact
Scout’s was very brave for a young girl at her age. In my opinion she was brave because she had been growing
up around boys her entire life since there wasn’t a lot of people in her neighborhood. But she shows a great amount
of bravery when she gets in the tire that Jem and Dill get her in and rolls her down the street into Radley’s porch.
(chap. 4 pgs. 37-38) She is a big daredevil and she doesn’t like to be underestimated by anyone especially by Jem
and Dill.
Fourth Artifact
Scout helps Jem when they have to go over to Mrs. Dubose’s everyday to read to her. Scout does not like Mrs.
Dubose because of how rude she is. But every time Scout went over to her house she would always look at the alarm
clock that she had sitting on her night stand. Mrs. Dubose’s alarm clock went off when it was time for them to leave
which was when they were done reading and when it was time for her to take her medicine. Scout’s attitude changes
towards Mrs. Dubose when she learns something from Atticus. Atticus showed Jem and Scout what true courage
was even when you were afraid or you don’t like someone. Her attitude also changes when she finds out why she
passed away a month after Jem’s punishment was over. So as Scout learns more and more about how the world
goes her attitude changes and her personality changes as well. Mrs. Dubose had a box for Jem after she passed
away with a white camellia flower in it. (chap. 11 pg 111)
Fifth Artifact
We all know that Scout is a daredevil. One of the things she did in chapter 4 page 33 was when they were
walking by Boo Radley’s and she saw some gum and she quickly took it out of the package and ate it. Jem was
wondering where she had got such a big wad of gum from and she had said she found it. Jem wasn’t happy that she
had ate something that she had found in a tree. She spit it out like he had asked her to do and then she made the
comment “ I’ve been chewin’ it all afternoon and i ain’t dead yet, not even sick.” She had a smart mouth when
someone was acting like they had the right to say or do whatever they want to her. She doesn’t handle people that
think they know more than she does or if she is wrong in a situation.
