Joanne Soon started piano lessons at age four and her natural affinity for music and piano playing

has led to her rapid progress. She has taken part in numerous international and local piano
competitions, festivals and recitals since the age of five, and attained prizes and awards for them.
Earlier this year, she achieved the Gold award for the World Classical Music Awards, the Silver award for the
London Young Musician Competition, the Third Prize for The 5th Hong Kong Pacific Piano Open Competition and
the Additional prize for the Henle Piano Competition.

Joanne loves Classical period pieces for their balance and order, while being able to evoke her emo-
tions and immerse herself in music through the dynamics and expressive differences within move-
ments of a composition. While she professes that piano learning and practices can be frustrating at
times, she has come to realise that disciplined hard work and a positive attitude to learning makes it
much easier, fun and satisfying. Joanne has just turned eight and looks forward to learning new piec-
es and the performance opportunities ahead.

In her free time, Joanne enjoys reading, singing, watching cartoons and playing with her pet bunny.

Sonata in D major K. 381 , 1st movement for Piano Duet by Mozart presented by Duo
“Classique”. Composed in 1772, the keyboard duet
was a popular novelty item when Wolfgang and his
sister Nannerl were touring Europe. Originally written
for harpsichord the Sonata has been described as a
three-movement Italian symphony. This orchestral
style of writing can be heard clearly throughout
with strong textural contrasts resembling the
interplay between various sections of an orchestra.

Joshua is currently a Math student at the

National University of Singapore. Following his
music passion he joined the NUS piano ensemble

Shannen, aged 11, was awarded the Best Chopin Perfor-

mance. She was also the Silver Prize winner of Best Classical

Megan Teo Yu En is 6 years old and she is an avid

music lover. She enjoys playing the cello and has picked up
the instrument from a young age. She loves the beautiful
sound of the cello and believes the cello sings. When she is
not practising cello, she enjoys creating art, swimming and
learning different types of latin dances which include cha cha,
rumba, salsa and jive.

At 2 years old, Lloyd was imitating the Cello playing on his bolster while watching Mischa
Maisky on YouTube when he made up his mind on learning the Cello. With the advice from Ms ”

Yap Shu Mei, Violin teacher of his 2 older sisters, he eventually
started off the Baby Violin class before converting to Cello since
the recommended age to start cello classes was 5 years old. His
Cello journey eventually started under the tutelage of Ms Vu
Thanh Hao at Mandeville Conservatory of Music.

Over the last 5 years, Lloyd has matured under the tutelage of
his current Cello Teacher, Ms Chen Chia-Min. Some
achievements include admission into the Singapore National
Youth Orchestra (Sinfonia) at 9 years old to become the
youngest member then. He also participated and won
numerous local and overseas Cello competitions such as the
Singapore Raffles International Music Competition, Nanyang
International Music Competition, Zhongsin International Music
Competition, Singapore Music Teachers Association Music
Competition, Canadian International Music Competition and
London Young Musician Competition. Lloyd has also attended mas-
terclasses and Orchestra sectional studies with Mr Leslie Tan, Mr Chan Wei Shing, Mr Lin Juan
and Mr Wang Zihao.

Lloyd is thankful for the opportunities that Mandeville Conservatory has provided for him to
participate in events such as the Singapore International Strings Conference, Mandeville String
Chamber Orchestra, recital performances and overseas exchange like the Taipei BoAi-
Mandeville Exchange. These platforms have developed his confidence in performing and joy of
playing the Cello with other like-minded individuals . Lloyd is currently listening to Mstislav
Rostropovich’s interpretation of Prokofiev’s Symphony Concerto in E Minor, Op. 125 and is
aiming to learn this piece.

Mandeville’s 27th Anniversary Concert 2022

Originally by Ed Sheeran in 2017 for his
album "÷ ", "What Do I Know" came about
because he wanted to demonstrate to a
record label head how fast he could write
a song, and was "basically written on the
spot". The result was a song about his
belief in love for people, and in the idea
that love can change the world in the
moment. Some of his concerts were
closed with this song to leave audiences
with that beautiful message to take
home.

Prai Phusangmook presents a

fingerstyle version of this song, which puts the emphasis on Sheeran's talent at writing
well-developed melodies. The pattern of descending melodic shapes runs throughout
the song, punctuated by reaches towards higher notes to mark changes in sections and
phrases. This creates an expectation of constant resolution that moves the song
forward on a natural momentum, and particularly interesting is also how Sheeran ends
the song on a melody that just wants to keep going.

Satin Doll is a jazz standard written by Duke
Ellington and Billy Strayhorn in 1953, and is
titled after Ellington's wife Beatrice "Evie"
Evington. The ii-V-I turnaroud chord
progression throughout the song is familiar to
many music, and is one of the reasons that it
became a commercial hit and well-known by
many to represent the sound of jazz. It is also a
popular piece for musicians to improvise over,
having been used extensively in jam sessions
and improvised performances in public.

The guitar arrangement performed by Poon
Phusangmook adds a more modern style of

improvised melody, and accentuates some of
the more interesting sections of the harmonies
involved. It also brings out the versatility of the
guitar as a lead instrument that imbues it's
own colour over compositions that are
traditionally presented by instruments that
defined their original sound.

Chris started playing the piano at 4 years old

and it was during the start of pandemic. His first
4 months of lesson was via zoom.
Despite disruption caused by the pandemic,
Chris excelled and finished his Grade 1 with
flying colors. He is now set to do his Grade 3 and
shows great strength in Aural. Chris'
musicianship is commendable. He'd listen to
songs and play them on piano.
At a young age, Chris' exposure to music was
beyond ordinary as he participated in several
department concerts of Mandeville and watched
other performances onsite with his parents.
He shows great interest in them that he would
further search online for more information
about the artists and their music.
Besides playing piano, Chris likes sports and
loves to sing and perform with his charming
moves.

From the 2017 hit musical film "The Greatest Showman" comes the familiar tune of A
Million Dreams, presented by our very own intermediate-level piano students,
featuring singers Emelyn and Zoe, and the band. This song is an ode to the power of
positivity, faith and believing in your dreams!

Performed by a group of energetic students from the piano and violin departments,
"Something Just Like This", as its songwriter
Chainsmokers explained, is about a relationship that doesn't need to be superhumanly
perfect, an ordinary love, a love everyone deserves.

Nicholas was introduced to the violin at the ripe

age of 4, starting with the Suzuki Method, then
bouncing between teachers before enrolling in
Mandeville Conservatory of Music at 10, studying
under the tutelage of Mr Teodor Izmirev. His love
for music continued to grow, and the Ensemble
programmes and performance opportunities only
served to fuel this passion. Nicholas proceeded to
complete his Grade 8 exam at age 12, and three
years later, he moved to San Antonio, Texas, where
he played in the Youth Orchestras of San Antonio,
performing several times a year, across both
Canada and the United States.
He returned in 2015 to serve his National Service,
but continued lessons with Mr Teodor in
Mandeville on his weekends off. In 2017, he moved
to Philadelphia to study music in Temple
University, where he graduated with a double
degree in Music Performance and Music Educa-
tion, studying under Elina Kalendarova of the acclaimed Philadelphia Orchestra. During

students ranging from ages 4 to 21, all of whom are taught by the philosophy that
anybody can learn.

Elizabeth’s musical journey started when she picked up the violin and the piano at

Mandeville Conservatory of Music. She achieved Distinction for her ABRSM Violin Grade
8 at the age of twelve, and her Licentiate of Trinity College London (LTCL) Diploma for Vi-
ola Performance when she was fourteen.
Her love for the orchestra led her to join the Methodist Girls’ School (Secondary) String
Ensemble and the Anglo-Chinese School (IB) Philharmonic Orchestra, where she served
as Viola Section Leader from 2019 to 2020 and 2021 to 2022 respectively. Beyond con-
tributing to the orchestras’ achievements of Distinction in the Singapore Youth Festi-
val Arts Presentation in 2017, 2019 and 2021, she used her skills to serve the communi-
ty, mentoring students from the Dazhong Primary School Junior Orchestra and per-
forming in the SPD Charity Show 2019.
She was a member of the viola section in the Singapore National Youth Orchestra
(SNYO) from 2018 to 2022, during which she also served as Viola Principal. Her time
with the SNYO saw her take part in a range of performing experiences, including school
outreach programmes, the SNYO Hong Kong and Guangzhou tour, two Singapore Sym-
phony Orchestra Gala concerts with Ray Chen and the recently-released SNYO Digital
Concert 2022, during which she performed the Mendelssohn’s Octet in E-flat Major.
As a musician profoundly deaf in her right ear, she firmly believes in music’s ability to
empower and seeks to improve its accessibility. This has led her to volunteer regularly
with Orchestra of the Music Makers
as a violist and a member of its
management team. She is grateful
towards her teachers, especially Ms
Yap Shu Mei, Ms Marinelle Balagtas,
Ms Dianne Rivas, Mr Matthias
Östringer and Mr Edward Tan, for
