Gated-community living
Written by Sandoval resident A David Parks DMD
Sandoval is my second gated community. My first was the Federal Penitentiary in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania.
As a senior in dental school, I did a one-week externship there, and they obviously take security very seriously.
No tailgating is allowed there, particularly when exiting! They also have myriad rules and regulations, and dur-
ing my stay at the Lewisburg lockup, I had to comply with every one of them.
After Pam and I made the decision to buy in Sandoval, a few folks told me that they would never live in a
gated community. They weren’t about to allow anyone to tell them what they could and couldn’t do regarding
their property. But when we signed our purchase agreement, we agreed to abide by the Sandoval Covenants.
That agreement to abide remains in place until we sell our property.
Many Sandoval rules and regulations are actually legal statutes of the City of Cape Coral, Lee County, or the
State of Florida. Are you aware that Cape Coral has a statute that prohibits dogs off leash? Another that pro-
hibits overnight parking on the street? That cars with signs must be parked inside garages at night, and the
signs must be covered even if the car is parked in the owner’s driveway? That trash containers cannot be
stored in front of garage doors? That neither food nor beverages can be brought any closer than 4 feet from
the edge of any public pool (such as our Lagoon Pool)? So even if you moved out of Sandoval but continued
to reside on the Cape, those rules would still apply to you.
There are many other covenants unique to Sandoval and many residents have some they don't like. But we
all signed the Covenants, and we're all responsible for following the rules, even the ones we don't like. San-
doval is more than a collection of homes and amenities. Sandoval is all of us, and just as we look out for each
other, we cooperate with all the covenants. It's an important part of living in a gated community.

4th Annual Sandoval Ryder Cup April 2016
Submitted by Sandoval resident golfer Doug Willet
The fourth annual Sandoval Golf Ryder Cup competition
took place in March. It began with the opening dinner
hosted by last year's runner up, the American Team and
their spouses on February 20 at the Clubhouse. The three
time defending champions, the Canadians, were greeted
at the front door with a green carpet and golf bag display.
The menu boasted delicious appetizers provided by the Canadian spouses and salad, wings, and generous por-
tions of pizza supplied by the American side. All enjoyed the "make your own" sundaes that ended the feast.
Started back in 2013 as a friendly suggestion for a competition between golfers from the two counties, the San-
doval Ryder Cup has transformed over the years into a still friendly but hotly contested event. The Canadian
team won the first two matches outright, but last year's event ended in a dead heat, so according with Ryder Cup
rules, the boys from the north retained possession of the trophy.
Most veterans of the previous cups returned to the fray. Original captains,
Andre Bourassa and Larry Nault, are back for the Canadians, as are cur-
rent captains, Maurice LaMontagne and Brian Courtis. Also returning
were Leo Stevenato, Rob Tersigni, Robert Weber, Brock Horseman and
Dave Butler. Added to the squad this year was Bill Ferrier.
On the American side, original Captain Ted Derr returned, along with Cap-
tains Bill Browning and Ron Lysik. Veterans Pete Hope, John Rode, Bill
Uhl, Frank Civitillo, Ken Darby and Doug Willett all participated for the
fourth time. New on the American side were Mike Thalberg, Mike Kayser,
and Bennie Orlowsky.
As the event evolved, it has become as much a social highlight as a sporting event. Wives and significant others
on both sides are deeply involved in the ambience of the competition and the shirts, hats and flags displayed at
the opening and closing dinners and during the week long competition have added color to the proceedings.
Did the Canadians defend their undefeated status or was this the year
that the Americans finally broke through? Glad to report that the Amer-
icans finally won!!! Congrats to all the players on both sides. Looking
forward to competing again next year.

Joe Kilraine is the guy you knew in high school who day. His mom and dad had been determined that Joe

Joe and Pat Kilraine--his wife of 43 years--met as stu-

that he lived with every to have three lumbar vertebral discs replaced. Thing is,
when most people have to go through something like
that, they accept the procedure and materials that their

surgeon offers. It says something about Joe's constant quest to find a better way that he didn't do that. Instead,
with his background in plastics and metals (he was an early contributor to improving the materials used in artificial
joints,) he traveled to Austria and underwent the first multi-layer disc replacement surgery that incorporated a
strong yet flexible plastic layer sandwiched between titanium alloy layers. The pioneering procedure meant that
he wouldn't have to settle for the greatly reduced flexibility that typically follows conventional fused disc-replace-
ment surgery. Thirteen years later, the discs are still in place and Joe is still flexible.
So, Joe, how do you keep up the pace?
"I love what I do for Sandoval," he says. "I probably put in 40 or 50 hours a week with the
transition and finance committee work, but I absolutely love it."
Will the Sandoval work get easier once transition is complete?
"Maybe," he says, "but there will be a new set of challenges to tackle. We'll be creating a
new board of directors, probably composed just of residents. The job of making Sandoval
the best it can be will never end. Neither will my desire to play a big part in that effort."

Bertie
Submitted by Sandoval residents Joan & David Follman
Hello my name is Bertie. I live half the year in Florida and the other half of the year in Tennessee.
I don’t know my actually birthday because I started my life in a very rough way. I was told I was around 6 weeks
old in December 2007 when I meet my mom. You see I was one of 27 cocker spaniels that were seized from a
breeder. When the animal control and recuse group showed up they found all of us living in extreme filth with
mattered fur and lots of medical issues. I was kept in a small crate in a dark shed that is too horrible to talk about.
My mom, Joan Follmann, at that time worked for the local veterinarian where we were taken that night. I was
so lucky, I never had to go to the rescue facility. After being in quarantine for a few days I was able to go home
with her and meet my dad and brother.
I love to play with all toys that make noise and tug-a-war. But I really like it when my human brother plays rough
with me and I bark and bark and bark at him. He thinks I am going to tear him to pieces. Silly boy.
I love living in both places. Here I have friends that I get to see when we go for our walks around the condo (I
am trying to make it to the club house). But in TN I live on 23 acres and I can actually go after those silly squires
and I don’t have to be on a leash with a harness.
In TN I have three other four-legged brothers (ha ha they have to live outside),
two pups and one real big pup (I am actually the size of his foot). They call
him a horse. But boy do I like to eat his food when he drops it.
I have to admit it I am spoiled rotten, but don’t tell mom. Daddy said that the
condo is actually mine. As you see when we travel, he always finds restau-
rants that I can go to and I get the entire back seat to play and sleep. When
they travel he buys me bling, bling. Who needs a collar when one wears
necklaces!
Hope to meet all of you soon,
Love, Bertie

House of Omelets on Pine Island Rd has been a favorite for several years now, but recently they opened
up a second location, off Cape Coral Parkway and Chiquita. This new location, formerly another restau-

We had a choice of breakfast or lunch items, and no one was disappointed. Some of the items enjoyed include
Corned Beef & Pastrami, the Tropical Omelet, lemon rice soup, julienne salad, the California salad, Feast Burger,
Southern Skillet, and a Tuna Melt.
No one had any room for dessert, but they looked yummy!
Comments from the crowd: everything looked yummy, will definitely be back; be sure to try it, you will like it; por-

Love at First Sight, Part 4 – April 2016
Ornamental Grasses
Submitted by Sandoval resident, Linda Duclos
Gama Grass or Fakahatchee Grass
This Florida native plant is a popular ornamental grass right here in Sandoval. It grows
in arching clumps 3-6 feet in height and has narrow leaves with a serrated edge. It
grows in full sun to partial sun and has dark green leaves with tall arching tan spikes.
The brownish flowers are held above the foliage and are produced spring through
fall. I am not an expert, but I have found that here in Sandoval, in some locations,
they can be susceptible to grubs that eat the roots and the grass then dies. If your
grass is dying and brown, just try pulling it out of the ground (should be very easy)
and look at the roots; you will see the grubs on the roots if this is the cause. This can
be treated by a grub killer, just ask your landscaper to treat it.
Fountain Grass
For a hardy splash of color in the garden, purple fountain grass is hard to beat. Red
to burgundy leaves and plumes reach heights of six feet with this grass. There is a
Rubrum compact species which only grows one to two feet in height. It is drought
tolerant and will even take a frost. Also comes in White!
Muhly Grass
In fall, Muhley grass produces fluffy pink to purple flower stalks that can reach up to
5 feet tall and tolerates salt, cold, drought and cold weather. A lovely white-flowering
form is also available. Muhley Grass is one of my personnel favorites. You can find
it planted along the Esplanade in mass, the purple haze their plumes give off in the
fall and winter is mesmerizing, especially when the sun highlights them.
Pruning
Ornamental grasses should be heavily pruned in late winter or early spring to ensure virtually year-round lush,
beautiful foliage. Evergreen grasses may only require the removal of old flower stalks while deciduous grasses
may require complete removal of the dead foliage and flower stalks from the previous season. Grasses usually
do not require pruning during the growing season except for those creeping grasses getting too close to the lawn.
Keeping Sandoval beautiful—that’s my goal!!

Child abuse 21
Submitted by 13 year old Sandoval resident April 2016
Marleigh Christopher
Child abuse is a huge issue, and needs to be brought to more people’s attention. Did you know that 28.3%
of adults report to being physically abused as a child, while other statics show that 20.7% of adults report
being sexually abused, and 10.6% of adults report being emotionally abused as a child. As you can tell
from the statistics abuse is a major issue that not many people are aware about. In fact, child abuse can even
lead to death. About 5 children die each day due to abuse.
There are five main types of child abuse which include: physical, sexual, exploitation, and emotional abuse. There
are many signs in parents in which there can be signs of them abusing their child such as: signs of physical
abuse including display of aggression toward a child. Signs of sexual abuse in a parent towards a child may in-
clude: the parent may rely on the child for emotional support, and a sign of emotional abuse in a parent is routinely
ignoring their child. Abuse causes behavioral problems in a child’s personality. One study conducted showed that
80% of 21 year olds who reported being abused had at least one psychological disorder.
To add to my findings, abused children are more likely to attempt suicide, or start doing drugs. Abuse cases can
also be very costly. For example, in 2008 all the children's needs such as health care costs, etc, added up to
$124 billion. That’s a lot of money to spend in one year, considering 3 million cases are reported in a year. There
are facilities such as DCF that take children out of this environment but those facilities cost a lot of money to
maintain the building and living expenses.
In conclusion, abuse needs to be brought to more people’s attention so we can stop this or lessen the problem.
The statistics prove that this is a huge problem, and needs to be stopped. Children dying because they are beaten
to death is not ok. Raise awareness, donate money to facilities, every little bit counts, as simple as an email to
an official or as little as a penny to a facility.
