children to learn more about themselves and develop their own
identity. And inter-personal skills, kindness, self-esteem and
self-confidence all flourish within strong friendship groups.

Trust Next step!
Prep
Building trust is a top priority for all our staff. It is at the foundation
of our school and strengthens bonds between us all – trust between
teacher and child; trust between staff and families; trust between
children. Through trust we are free to take risks, free to try and fail
(and learn from our mistakes), free to become ourselves.

Creativity

Every child is an individual with their own unique
personality. Their likes and dislikes are integral to
their character. Participation in the creative arts not
only gives them the opportunity to explore new
activities but also provides the chance to express
their feelings in different forms. We offer a range

of artistic activity and encourage every child to
express themselves.

Accomplishment

We recognise and celebrate individual successes, both large
and small. Such recognition has a powerful impact on children,
reinforcing resilience and self-esteem, and propels them on to the
next challenge. It also creates an environment in which children
learn the value of diligence, effort and perseverance.

The beauty and heritage of the surroundings in which we work and
play have a positive and enduring impact on us all. We are fortunate
to enjoy the stunning grounds of the Cathedral Close for sports and
outdoor learning experiences. And our special relationship with
Salisbury Cathedral enables our pupils to take advantage of the many
inspiring events held in this historic place of worship, including our
weekly family assembly.

Our extensive grounds of over 20 acres offer pupils the space to
release energy and to express and challenge themselves physically.
As well as expansive sports facilities including AstroTurf pitches and

BOARDING

Developing friendships, confidence and independence

Our house

Boarders live together in a converted
house in the Cathedral Close, with
appropriate modern facilities. Situated
across the Close from the school, it gives
the children a sense of leaving school
and coming ‘home’. We have two large
common rooms which are the focus for
fun and relaxation. A small kitchen is
available for evening snacks, such as toast
and hot chocolate. We also have a large
garden which we enjoy year-round.

Our staff

The Boarding House is run by Gary Slade, Head of Boarding, School
Operations and Games, and his wife Simi, House Mistress. They live in the
Boarding House with their young daughter, Sienna. Our Senior Boarding Tutor
and three additional Boarding Tutors support them and the five Gap Students
assist with the recreation schedule as well as with wake up and bedtime.

Care and welfare

The welfare of the boarders is our top priority and we work hard to meet each individual pupil’s
needs and ensure that every child feels secure, happy and well cared for. Children who board
between 8 and 13 years have special requirements, and Boarding House staff have a vital role to
play in loco parentis, providing affection and stability, while encouraging independence. There is
an expectation that the children will treat each other with respect and courtesy and this makes
for a very happy house which operates very much like a large family.

Weekends

While some children choose to go home at weekends, others
opt to stay in and take part in the many and varied weekend
trips and activities on offer. There is always something going
on whether it’s within the Boarding House, in town or further
afield. We do all sorts of things:

• Campfires and toasting marshmallows in our garden
• Activities in our beautiful and extensive school grounds
• Ten pin bowling
• Crabbing at Mudeford Quay
• Longleat’s Festival of Light
• Walks in the New Forest
• Cooking – ‘The Great British Boarders’ Bake Off’

Switching off

Boarding life tends to be full of activity. But at our school we also give our
boarders unstructured, free time. Whether it’s reading, engaging with one
another, making their own entertainment or just passing the time together,
they are learning how to switch off.

Full, weekly & flexi boarding is available
