In March, as the weather improved, we started back at our project at the Orrell St. James Sports
Club. We firstly installed a secondary drainage system at 1m centres and ameliorated sand into the
surface. The pitches were then seeded in mid-April.
In July we also got the go ahead for some extra work, which included the construction of a footpath
between the pitches and the installation of goal sockets.
The pitch maintenance is currently going well, and we are on track for handover in October. Thank

Norman Park Track, London Borough of Bromley Bar End Athletics Arena, Winchester
Basildon Sporting Village Track, Essex
Athletics Track Refurbishment
We are currently undertaking a full athletics track refurbishment for Basildon Borough Council at their
sporting village venue.
The existing facility dates back to 1969 when Basildon Athletics Club first used the original grass track.
This was then developed into a tartan track in 1986, which underwent a retexturizing process in 2005 to
extend its lifespan.
The existing track was in very poor condition with extensive signs of deterioration. This was particularly
evident in the high use areas such as the sprint straight which had numerous cracks, bubbles, deviations
and ripples. There was also evidence that a recent deep clean had marked the top surface and removed
some of the structural polymeric overspray. There were several splits in the surface which had created
widespread deviations which fell outside of the IAAF parameters of 6mm over a 4m straight edge for
evenness. The shock absorption was also outside of the recommended parameters.
Our full refurbishment firstly began with the removal of the existing synthetic surface. We then planned off
the existing macadam and made the necessary repairs to the base ahead of the new macadam
installation. During the next couple of weeks we will install the new IAAF certified Conipur SW system.
This is a water impermeable 13mm thick sandwich system made up of a PUR-bound elastic layer and a
PUR wear coat. We proposed this system due to it’s durability and non-slip characteristics, making it
excellent for athletes in all weather conditions.
Along with the track we will also refurbish; the steeplechase lane and water jump facility, the dual long/
triple jump facility, 2 no. infield long jump runways, the high jump facilities within half D-area and the
javelin runway.
Work is progressing well and we hope to complete the project by the end of August. Once handed over
the facility will be open all year round and will be used by the local community, clubs and schools.
Basildon Sporting Village Track, Basildon
Churchill Playing Fields, Whitley Bay
Athletics Track Refurbishment
At the beginning of the year we were appointed by North Tyneside Council to refurbish their current
athletics track and associated facilities at Churchill Playing Fields. The existing track, which was
originally converted from a cinder surface during the 1990’s and further refurbished in 2002, was
showing many signs of wear and tear. The black base mat was exposed in a number of places and
had even started deteriorating in several of these areas.
The refurbishment therefore involved the removal of the existing surface, several localised repairs to
the macadam base and the installation of a new porous IAAF certified system. Updates and
modifications were also carried out to the high jump, throwing cage and runway areas to ensure
UKA compliance.
The track will be used by NOTAN (North of Tyne Athletics network) and North Shields Polytechnic
Club who both train and host competitions. The facility will also continue to be let for school use.
Despite this project being put on hold for 5-weeks due to the Covid-19 pandemic, it has now been
successfully completed and handed over to the client. Thank you to all those who helped progress
this project during these difficult circumstances.

installations are carried out to the required standards on a country wide basis.

Our grass cutting contract for Redcar and Cleveland Council has been successfully fulfilled once again by

Cycle Way and Pump
Track Construction
After successfully securing this contract
in April last year, we were glad to finally
get on the ground and get it underway.
This project is a one of a kind
development and involves the
construction of a cycle way and a BMX
pump track at the Sutton Bank National
Park Centre.
The 2.6km Cyclo/Gravelcross circuit
which runs through the woods has been
designed and constructed for Cyclocross,
a popular Winter form of off-road cycle
racing. The design has also considered
the increasing popularity of ‘Gravel
Riding’, a form of off road riding on non-
technical trails.
It is hoped that coaching, instruction and
guiding could be introduced at Sutton
Bank, which would appeal to schools,
colleges and the commercial business
sector in off peak times and give people
a reason to visit Sutton Bank in Winter
weather conditions.
The pump track, which has now been
constructed at the top of the site, is a
short looping circuit of rolling bumps
(rollers) and banked corners (berms) that
can be ridden on a bike without
pedalling. The name “pump track” comes
from the pumping motion used by the
rider’s upper and lower body using this to
maintain speed around the track (without
pedalling).
Thanks go to the director led team who
have progressed the project during this
difficult time.
Hire and Sales
Update
Thank you to everyone for their efforts over
the last few months, it has certainly been a
challenging time for all. Although hires
haven’t been at the normal level for this time
of year we have still had equipment going out
to various customers.
• South Tyneside Council once again hired
an additional New Holland T5.105 with
turf tyres for their beach cleaning work.
• Seven Tube & Fit racked trailers were
supplied to Kaefer to work on a scaled
back shutdown on Wilton.
• Hertel hired an additional forklift, tractor
and several trailers, again for a scaled
back shutdown at their Pembroke refinery
site. It is hoped, all being well, the full
shutdown will take place next year.
• A remote control Spider and a used Verti-
Core 1700 were sold to a customer in
Stuttgart Germany.

Staff Reminder
All workshop repairs must be booked in
Could all staff please book in any work required by the workshop prior to turning up.
You must notify the Selfdrive office and Workshop office of any repairs or “little jobs” that you require to
ensure all jobs are raised correctly and the relevant people notified.
During the Covid-19 pandemic we have been working with reduced numbers of staff and have
implemented staggered start and finish times to try and make the workshop a safer place. Every day is
strictly planned to ensure we have the correct staff and the hours that are required to meet deadlines in
order to get machines ready for hire.
If you do not book in your repairs and just turn up on a morning, this causes major disruptions to our
working day. If you do not book your repairs in and urgently require something, you may find we don’t
have the correct number of staff to carry out the work.
Prior scheduling of these jobs will ensure we can keep all divisions of our company operating efficiently.

COVID-19 - Using best practice to keep our sites open
The Covid-19 pandemic has created unprecedented challenges for all sectors including construction.
Despite this, CLS and our supply chain partners have innovated, problem solved and utilised
technology to keep our sites open where we can. Where we have been able to remain open, we
have incorporated the Government backed Construction Leadership Council Site Operating
Procedures into our Contract Health and Safety Plans. These procedures follow the latest scientific
advice and direct safe social distancing practices across construction sites.
Health and Safety
Coronavirus and Mental Health
During these unprecedented times many of us have had to adapt to difficult or unfamiliar circumstances,
such as being confined to our homes, away from our loved ones and restricted from social contact. This
may, more than ever before, make it difficult for you to cope with life both at home and at work. Having
good mental health helps us relax more, achieve more and enjoy our lives more.
As our colleagues, friends and family adapt to more isolated living and working procedures, it is crucial
that we lookout for each other and make time to talk. We all therefore, throughout the company, need to
be aware of negative stress, allowing us all to identify the symptoms within ourselves and our wider social
network. Being aware of the symptoms of negative stress allows us to support those who need it
accordingly.
Spot the signs of negative stress
Here are some ways you can spot the signs that you or someone else may be experiencing negative
stress.
Feelings Physical Ability to work
• Tearfulness • Sleep disturbance • Slow cognitive performance
• Anxiety
• Irritability and aggression • Tiredness and lethargy • Easily distracted
• Low self-esteem and
• Headaches • Forgetful or bad memory
confidence
• Muscle tension or backache • Impaired verbal reasoning
• Difficulty concentrating
• Changes in weight
• Low mood and motivation • Frequent colds and infections
• Feelings of insecurity
Tips for everyday
If you or someone you know are showing these signs, here are a few everyday actions you can take to
help improve your overall wellbeing.
Connect with friends, family and colleagues: Avoid social isolation and stay in touch with others
regularly via phone, text, social media, video conferencing etc. Helping others cope with their stress can
also be beneficial for your mental health too.
Routine: Sticking to a routine throughout the day helps you feel more in control.
Keep active: Your physical health has a big impact on how you are feeling emotionally and mentally.
Here are some free 10-minute work outs from Public Health England (https://www.nhs.uk/oneyou/for-your
-body/move-more/home-workout-videos) Sport England also has good tips for keeping active at home
(https://www.sportengland.org/jointhemovement).
Keep relaxed: This can help with difficult emotions, worries about the future and can improve wellbeing.
Relaxation techniques can also help some people to deal with feelings of anxiety. For useful resources
see Every Mind Matters. https://www.nhs.uk/oneyou/every-mind-matters/
Avoid exposure too much news: Hearing about the pandemic repeatedly can be upsetting, so limit your
news to reliable sources and be conscious of when enough is enough.
If you are working, talk to your manager: Be open and honest about how COVID-19 is affecting you
and your work. We are all human and the chances are your manager will be able to relate to how you are
feeling. Discuss and agree what help and support you need to protect your wellbeing and avoid burnout.
It’s ok to ask for some breathing space in these testing times.
