PERUTUSAN PENGARAH

PERUTUSAN PENGARAH

INSTITUT LATIHAN KEMENTERIAN KESIHATAN MALAYSIA KUCHING

T erlebih dahulu saya ingin mengucapkan selamat datang ke ILKKM Kuching. Tahniah

Sekian, terima kasih.

Liew Chee Foh
Pengarah,

LATAR BELAKANG PROGRAM

T he economic status and the changing sociocultural behaviour of the population have a major

influence on the spectrum of pathology and surgical practice. Technological developments
continue to improve well into the 21st century, bringing in advancements in surgical care. By
extension, the responsibilities of the registered nurse that assists in patient care in the operating
room/theatre need to keep up with the times. Perioperative nursing was introduced in the US

by Association Of perioperative Registered Nurses (AORN) (1978) and continuously
develops standards of responsibility and safety for the patient's care in perioperative practice.

Perioperative practice is demanding; it is complex, highly technical and very different
compared with other settings. Perioperative nurses work in challenging situations under a fast
pace and have to address the basic concepts that are unique in ensuring the surgical patient's

safety (Spruce, 2013).
As perioperative nurses, we have acquired competencies to provide safe perioperative care
based on a holistic human approach to the surgical patient taking into consideration their
physical, psychological, spiritual and social needs. Perioperative nurses provide care for
patients in the period prior to and right after surgery or intervention procedures. Perioperative

nursing encompasses a variety of specialty roles including holding bay, circulating,
anaesthesia, instrument or scrub nurse, and recovery room. Other roles include patient
evaluation and education and surgeon’s assistant. Some perioperative nurses may fill more
than one of these roles during a particular procedure depending on the nature and complexity
of the procedure. Some of the nurse role titles are used interchangeably in different hospitals or

operations theatre settings.
This Advanced Diploma in Perioperative Nursing provides the clinician with the clinically
focused skills and knowledge to function at a baseline perioperative nurse level within the
perioperative environment. This curriculum has also addressed the key issues relating to core
materials in Perioperative Nursing and the importance of clinical competence for practice.
These reflect a maturity in the quality of training for the Perioperative Nurse which is in line

with the aspiration and the endeavour of the Training Management Division Ministry of
Health Malaysia to achieve the highest quality training for their paramedics at all times.
