Aspect Types

There are three primary types of aspect: Geometrical, Archetypal and Conduit as-
pects. Geometrical or angular aspects are measured either along the ecliptic (in lon-
gitude) or above and below the celestial equator (in degrees of latitude). Most aspects
described by astrologers throughout history have been angular, Geometrical aspects
measured along the arc of the ecliptic such as Mars trine Venus, Mercury square the
Moon or Sun sextile Pluto. In this work, Archetypal and Conduit aspects add addi-
tional layers of insight and meaning to the interaction of planets.

Normally, for two planets to form a Sextile aspect of 60° they would have to sepa-
rated by an angle of 60° plus or minus the given orb of influence. While the most
important factor to take into consideration with any aspect is the alchemical reaction
between the two planets involved, the meaning of the aspect angle defines, colors
and modulates the energetic relationship with an aspectual inflection. Each aspect
symbolizes a distinct evolutionary process.

Archetypal Aspects can either be Whole-Sign aspects measuring sign relationship
or Mythic aspects measuring the planetary archetypal interaction within conscious-
ness. Whole-Sign archetypal aspects are aspects between signs without degrees and
depend entirely on the archetypes of the Zodiac. With archetypal aspects, we con-
sider the emotionally-charged imagery of the signs involved in the aspect, regardless
of degrees and orbs. If a planet occupies Aries it automatically forms an archetypal
Sextile aspect relationship to every planet in Gemini and Aquarius, the two signs that
are 60° from Aries. I highly recommend studying the archetypal aspects between the
core polarities of Sun/Moon, Mars/Venus, Jupiter/Saturn, Uranus/Neptune, Ceres/
Chiron and Mercury/Pluto as well as between the five inner planets: Sun, Mercury,
Venus, Moon and Mars. The archetypal relationship between Mercury and the Moon,
for instance, would describe the connection between a person’s mind and heart. In
addition, the base emotions, plot motifs, instincts, imagery, mentations and titans in-
volved in the expression of the Sun, Moon and Ascending signs indicate the emergent
being symbolized by the chart. The integral synthesis of the multiple symbols of as-
trology point to the authentic experience of human character in action.

Conduit Aspects occur when one of the seven traditional planets forms an aspect to
one of the invisible (to the naked-eye) modern planets or dwarf planets. The personal
planet acts as a ‘conduit’ for the transpersonal force of the unseen planet. When one
of these aspects involves one of the threshold guardians of Mercury, Ceres, Chiron
or Pluto it is also called a Portal aspect. Because Mercury, Ceres, Chiron and Pluto
occupy specific thresholds of consciousness in the solar system, they act as doorways
or nexus points in consciousness. If one of the planets involved in a Conduit aspect
is Chiron, Uranus, Neptune or Pluto it is also called a Generational aspect. Genera-
tional aspects are common to millions of people born during the same couple of years
and sharing a similar generation mythic plot motif. If Chiron, Uranus, Neptune or
Pluto are involved with each other, it is simply a Generational aspect, but not neces-
sarily a Conduit aspect.

When multiple aspects combine their influence it is called an aspect Configuration,
acting as a deeply ingrained psychological complex within the individual.

A Configuration involving three or more actual planets or dwarf planets is called a
Planetary Configuration. If a planet (or planets) form an aspect (or multiple aspects)
to a non-planetary Axis of Polarity such as the Nodal Axis, the Ascendant-Descen-
dant Axis, the Midheaven-Nadir Axis or the Lot of Fortune Axis it is called a Polarity
Configuration.

Each living being has a unique aspect pattern present in the chart at the moment of
birth, symbolizing the inner structure of the psyche. When studying aspects, it is a
mistake to consider one aspect between two planets in isolation. The main problem
lies in the fact that we can only focus deeply on one thing at a time. In studying
your aspect patterns, it is helpful to write them down on a large piece of paper and
make notes next to each aspect. Start with the Sun and Moon and work your way
deeper into the crystal. As you begin to take notes on the effects of each aspect the
information on the page will begin to expand. You will begin to see patterns emerge
and mythic themes. You will begin to understand how the planets symbolizing the
various forces of your consciousness are working together in a dynamic unified way.
Also make note of any Configurations that emerge. These are the centerpieces of
your being. Once you develop a comprehensive view of the inner workings of your
psyche, then you can go back and look at chart evolutions to the pattern.
