THE SECOND CHOICE I hate the number 2 Because it’s whatI’ve always been Since elementary school I’ve walked on the grass thatis nextto the sidewalk I’ve walked behind a pair with joined arms I’ve sat alone in the back seat of a car I’ve been silenced during conversations with others “Well I-“I would say for the firsttime “Well I-“I would try again Ifigure third times a charm, right? “Well I-“and no one even glances my way I envy family in books and TV shows Because I’ve realized I could never form a friendship like that. Someone willing to die,for me? I can barely convince anyone to wantto hang out. So Iform relationships with the characters in books I idealize romance and love, in hopes it will one day fillthis void in my heart and this voice in my head telling me I will never be enough I pretend my eyes don’t glow green whenever I see videos offriends doing everything together I wantto be liked. I wantto be loved. I want everyone to stop leaving. I wantto be seen. I wantto be heard. And I wantto be someone’s world. Butthatisn’t realistic for a second choice. AN EMAIL TO A FRIEND BY FATIN SAJIEDAH BINTI JAMALUDDIN (PRA U 2USM) From : Fatin Subject : Adventure Club's Trip to Cameron Highlands Hello Ain, How are you? I hope you are having a speedy recovery and are as fit as a fiddle now. I was feeling a bit crestfallen when you couldn’t join our Adventure Club’s trip to Cameron Highlands. The trip was an exciting experience for me. The weather was very cold and chilly. For your information, Cameron Highlands is a popular hilly region because it offers pleasant cool temperatures due to its high altitude. The places that I enjoyed visiting the most was the BOH Tea Plantation in Tanah Rata. It is because there were amazing landscapes and stunning panoramic views. Besides, the tea gardens were truly picturesque because I have taken some photographs with my friends. While watching the panoramas, I enjoyed a cup of hotsteaming tea and some delicious scones. Furthermore, the second place that I visited was the Lavender Garden. It was an opportunity for us to admire vibrant colourful flowers. There was a shop that sold lavender ice - cream and also strawberry ice - cream. I loved the taste ofthe softice - cream because it was mouth - watering. Yes, your father was correct in saying that Cameron Highlands is famous for its steamboat. It is because the food here is very fresh and tastes so good. I'm feeling blue that I couldn't go because my schedule was very packed. I also heard thatthe Adventure Club is planning another trip soon. I think they will be going to Pangkor Island next month. Let’s make memories. Really hoping that you will be able to join me for thattrip. Have a nice day ! Fatin 49
HOMEWORK IS ESSENTIAL FOR STUDENTS NUR AIN SYUHADA BINTI ZULFREE PRA-U 2UKM As a student, doing homework can give many benefits as it develops many skills in oneself. Even though students do notlike doing homework itis necessary for the students. Personally speaking, Itotally agree that homework is necessary for students because it helps the students to learn how to solve problems, develop time management skills and increase student’s self-esteem especially for examinations. First and foremost, homework can help students to learn how to solve problems. When the teacher gives homework that has many questions, we need to think fastto answer the questions. The more difficultthe questions are,the harder we need to think. This can make our brains to think differenttypes of ways to solve the questions. For example, when a student answers a math question, he or she willtry to think of a suitable solution to getthe right answer after a learning session in school. Hence without a doubt, homework can help students to learn how to solve problems which makes them smarter. Apartfrom that, students can develop their time management skills while doing homework. Different subjects have differenttypes of answer schemes. This is why students should be aware oftheir time management when doing homework. For instance, if students set a certain time period when doing the homework, they will improve their mental intelligence to do a job on time. Especially when the teacher gives a deadline to submitthe assignment. Homework can also make students be more punctual in finishing their task. Students should not do their work atthe eleventh hour ifthey do not wantto face the music. Thus, homework can develop time management skills in students which makes them more disciplined. Moreover, homework can also increase the student’s confidence especially during examination. The more homework given by the teachers make the student practice many differenttypes of questions. When the student has done many types of questions, they will be ready to face the examination. Some students mightthink homework is a burden to do especially during the holidays but atthe same time, itimproves their knowledge in something thatthey had never expected. An example is when the students are answering the exam questions, no matter how hard the questions are, they know how to give the suitable answer. As a result, they can pass the examination with flying colours. Therefore, homework can also increase the student’s confidence. In conclusion, even ifthe students are too lazy to do their homework, they have to think of the outcome of doing homework. So,they would not have negative perspective allthe time about homework. Many benefits can be reaped when doing homework. This is why homework is essentialfor students. 50
HOW TO LEAD A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE? BY NUR JAZIMA SYAMIMI BINTI JAZMI PRA U 1UM In my humble opinion, having a “me” time is the best way to stay healthy. It’s because you need time for yourself to chill and relax from the hustle and bustle of life. So if you have “me” time in your daily schedule, you can do anything without feeling stressed. Furthermore, you can also have better days ahead. For example, I love writing poems. When I am writing my poems, I can release all my feelings. It does not matter if I am feeling over the moon or down in the dumps, I can pen it all down in my poem. I do realize not everyone can understand my problems so having this “me” time of writing poems is a tremendous release of stress and emotions. In addition, my collection of poems can be a treasure trove of memories in my old age. Hence, I am killing two birds with one stone. HOW TO LEAD A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE? BY MUHAMMAD FARID WAJDI ISHAK PRA U 1 UKM From my point of view, we must avoid watching inappropriate materials on social media. Sadly, not many people have taken this seriously. Watching pornography and surfing dark web sites can destroy one’s mental and physical health. When this habit becomes an addiction, people will startto either feel disgusted or ashamed with their hidden secrets. Even the well-known Persian philosopher, Imam al-Ghazali has quoted, “To destroy man, show him pornography”. Therefore, I strongly believe avoiding this negative habitis the most effective way to lead a healthy lifestyle. 51
TITLE: TRAGEDIES CAN BE PREVENTED. NUR HIDAYAH BINTI MOHD ISA PRA-U 2UKM There are many tragedies that are happening around us. It may take many lives including our loved ones. Some examples of tragedies that may happen are accidents, kidnapping and others. People often say thattragedies can be prevented. I partially agree with this statement. I strongly believe tragedies can be prevented by getting enough rest before driving and be more careful. However, some tragedies happen because of other people. So, we cannot fully preventthe tragedies from happening. Firstly, tragedies can be prevented by getting enough rest especially before driving. Some tragedies especially road accidents happen when the drivers feel sleepy or tired while driving. They might not have enough rest due to overload of work or do not have proper hours of sleep. Most accidents happen at night. This might be due to micro sleep while driving. For example, most accidents happen during festivals like Hari Raya or Chinese New Year. People have long hours of journey and have to drive for many hours. They do not stop at the rest areas like the RnR and continue driving eventhough they are tired. Thus, indirectly some of these tragedies like accidents can be prevented by getting enough rest. Next, tragedies can also be prevented by being more careful. This is especially for women or mothers. We can avoid tragedies like kidnapping or murder from happening. For example, there was a case a few years ago in Malaysia, where Nurul Nadhirah was reported missing after her mother let her go to a nearby shop to buy instant noodles and eggs.Surprisingly, she was 5 years old when the tragedy happened and she was alone at that time. The poor girl was kidnapped and murdered! Her mother thought when the shop was nearby their house, it was safe to let her child go there alone. Hence, tragedy can be prevented if we are more careful because we do not know what will happen in the future, as the saying goes, it is no use crying over spilt milk! Thirdly, some of tragedies cannot be prevented by ourselves because it may be caused by other people. For example, the tragedy of Malaysian Airlines (MAS) MH17 that was shot down by an air missile. It was shot by the Ukraine army near the towns of Torez and Snizhe. Nobody thought that the crash would happen and it could not be avoided because it was such an unexpected tragedy that will be remembered. Therefore, the crash of MH17 became a tragedy that could not be prevented by ourselves because it happened due to other people and thus, it was out of our control. In conclusion, some tragedies can be prevented but not all. We must be aware of what is happening around us. It is because if we are aware of our surrounding, we can avoid the tragedy from happening as the saying goes “better to be safe than sorry”. 52
