A visit to the Statue of Unity near Rajpipla, Gujarat
The colossal statue of Sardar Patel towers over the Narmada
dam at Sadhu Bet island near Rajpipla in Gujarat. Cast in
bronze and steel and bolstered by reinforced concrete, it is
now the tallest statue in the world with a height of 182 metres.
The statue is a tribute to Sardar Patel, a freedom fighters who
is also known as the Iron Man of India. Sardar Patel was India's
first Home Minister and played a pivotal role in uniting the
provincial states to form a united India.
The statue has become a favourite sightseeing and picnic
spot. Located near Vadodara, Bharuch and Surat, the statue is
visited by locals during weekends and holidays.
I visited the place with my family on a Sunday. We had a tour of
the museum located the cities the statue as well as the garden
with an assortment of flowers from all over India. We were also
able to enjoy the view of the Narmada dam and Sardar
Sarovar lake.
