Il comitato vuole rendere omaggio al nostro caro presidente Mike Sorbara.
Per circa 40 anni è stato il rappresentante per eccellenza del gruppo
Comunità San Giorgio nella comunità italiana in Ontario. Vogliamo
ringraziare profondamente Mike per i suoi anni di servizio e dedizione al
nostro piccolo grande paese. Grazie per aver spianato la via per i giovani
in tutti questi anni. Ci hai mostrato che le nostre tradizioni e la nostra cultura
sono molto importanti. Speriamo di continuare a ispirare i nostri cari
Sangiorgesi a rappresentare al meglio il nostro paese.

almost 40 years, he has been a wonderful representative of the Comunità

San Giorgio in the Italian community in Ontario. We would like to deeply
thank Mike for all the years of serivce and dedication to our great, small
town. Thank you for paving the way for the youth all of these years. You
have shown us the importance of our traditions and culture. We hope to
continue inspiring our Sangiorgesi to continue representing our town to the

best of our ability.

Le nostre radici…

Our Roots…

San Giorgio Morgeto (San Giorgiu Morgetu/ San Giorgi in dialetto) è un comune italiano
di circa 3000 abitanti della città metropolitana di Reggio Calabria, in Calabria. Fa parte
del Parco nazionale dell'Aspromonte.
La storia di San Giorgio Morgeto è stata teatro di molti miti, dal re Italo, al popolo italico
del re Morgete, al Castello posto su una collina che è avamposto del Parco nazionale
dell'Aspromonte.
« E Castello antichissimo, lo fabricò Morgete figliuolo d'Italo, che per ciò fu chiamato
Morgeto »

Alla dominazione dei Greci segui quella dei Romani sino all'avvento dei
Normanni, durante la cui dominazione furono costituiti dei feudi il cui assetto durerà fino
all'epoca dei Svevi. Nel IX secolo si affermò la cultura dei Monaci Bizantini, che
influenzò l'attività economica e religiosa. Edificarono un monastero e una chiesa (Santa
Maria dell'Odigitria), che divento punto di riferimento per le genti che vi abitavano.
Come riporta S.Nico, quando ci fu la peste, Morgetum e il suo monastero non subirono
alcun danno, anzi accolsero una parte dei profughi che provenivano da Taureana e
Oppido Mamertina.

Nel 1324 San Giorgio fu costituito in baronia che comprendeva i feudi di
Polistena, Anoia, Cinquefrondi, Prateria, Galatro. Nel 1343 la baronia fu donata ad
Antonio Caracciolo dalla Regina Giovanna I. Poi, la Baronia passò sotto la dominazione
degli Angioini, Svevi e Aragonesi.

Nel 1684 i confini della baronia si spingono ad est sino al feudo di Prateria e a
sud sino a San Fili, la baronia passò dai Caracciolo ai Correale ed infine alla famiglia
Milano (Baroni di San Giorgio nel 1501 e Marchesi nel 1593), che detenne il titolo fino al
1806, anno in cui Bonaparte decretò la fine della feudalità.
Nel 1864, il Re Vittorio Emanuele II, modifico il nome di San Giorgio in San Giorgio
Morgeto.

Nel passato San Giorgio, si chiamo anche San Giorgio di Polistena, per aver
fatto parte del territorio polistenese.

Nel 1921 l'archeologo Paolo Orsi incaricò il Vincenzo De Cristo (di Cittanova)
per eseguire alcuni scavi sul sito di Altanum (che va da Cinquefrondi-Polistena-San
Giorgio Morgeto).

San Giorgio Morgeto (San Giorgiu Morgetu/ San Giorgi in dialect) is an italian town of
approximately 3000 people in the area of Reggio Calabria in the region of Calabria. It
makes up a part of the Aspromonte National Park.
San Giorgio Morgeto’s history is rich of many myths, home of King Italo, and populated
by the people of King Morgete in the famous castle on the top of the town a part of the
Aspromonte National Park.

Morgeto »

After Greek domination there lied the domination of the Romans and the
Normans which faught and duelled until the era of the Swebian people. In the IX
century, the culture of the Bizantine Monks was vastly present that influenced the
economic and religious events and activities. They built a monatary and a church
(Santa Maria dell’Origitria), that was the central point of encounter for the habitants. S.
Nico claims a plague came over the area but Morgetum and the monastary were not
affected, instead, they were able to house many sufferers from the near by towns of
Taureana and Oppido Mamertina.

In 1324, the peerage was implemented which included the domains of
Polistena, Anoia, Cinquefrondi, Prateria, Galatro. In 1343, the peerage was gifted to
Antonio Caracciolo of Queen Giovanna I. After, the peerage was run by the Angiolini,
Swabian and Aragones people which dominated.

In 1684, the peerage extends it’s borders east towards Prateria and south
towards San Fili. It passed through the Caracciolo family to the Correale family and
lastly the Milano family (Barons of San Giorgio in 1501 and Marchesi in 1593), that held
this title until 1806, the year in which Bonaparte proclaimed the end of the feudalism.

In the past, San Giorgio was also named San Giorgio of Polistena because it
was a part of the Polistenese territory.

In 1921, an archeologist named Paolo Orsi, commissioned Vincenzo De Cristo
of Cittanova to overlook an excavation project on the Altanum site (it goes through
Cinquefrondi, Polistena, and San Giorgio Morgeto).

Hello from the committee…

Cari Sangiorgesi,
Siamo lieti di continuare a mantenere le nostre radici. Grazie a voi, riusciamo a organizzare eventi
come la festa di San Giorgio e San Giacomo che sono i pilastri della nostra cultura. Come ogni
anno cerchiamo l’aiuto dei giovani. Per mantenere le nostre usanze all’estero, è essenziale avere il
sostegno dei nostri paesani. Quest’anno c’è un aggiornamento al nostro comitato e ci sono delle
nuove idee ideali per i piccoli fino ai più maturi. È molto importante mantenere la festa dei Santi
ma è altrettanto importante aggiungere altri eventi e incontri che promuovono il nostro paese nel
GTA. L’unità ci rende più forti! Come ogni anno, invitiamo gente nuova per aggiungersi al nostro
comitato. Vogliamo nuove facce e nuove idee cosi possiamo garantire una continuità alla nostra
identità qui in Ontario.

Dear Sangiorgesi,
We are proud to continue celebrating our roots. Thanks to all of you, we are able to organize
events such as the feast of San Giorgio and San Giacomo that are pillars in our culture. Every year
we ask for help from the youth of our community and we continue to do so. In order to maintain
our traditions in Canada, it is important to have the support of our people. This year there has
been a positive change to our committee and there are new ideas that are ideal for all age

groups. It is very important to continue the tradition of the feast of our Saints but it is just as
important to add other events and encounters that promote our town in the GTA. Being united will
make us stronger! Every year, we invite new people to join our committee. We want new ideas and

faces so we can guarantee longevity to our identity here in Ontario.

Giovan Domenico, conosciuto come Tommaso Campanella è
un noto scrittore di un testo descrivendo un mondo utopico
chiamato La città del Sole.
Che importanza ha questo grande pensatore per il nostro
piccolo paese di San Giorgio Morgeto?
Divenne novizio nel convento della vicina cittadina di
Placanica, mentre i voti li prese a quindici anni nel monastero di
San Giorgio Morgeto, prendendo il nome religioso di Tommaso
in onore del grande santo dei D’Aquino.
La Biblioteca comunale di San Giorgio Morgeto è intitolata a
"Tommaso Campanella" in onore al filosofo, teologo e padre
domenicano.

Eccellenza Culinaria Giovan Domenico, better known as, Tommaso Campanella is a
known writer of the utopic novel called The City of the Sun.
How does this great thinker connect to our small town
San Giorgio Morgeto?
He became a novice in the convent of Placanica, a small
nearby town and he received his official vocation at fifteen
years old in the Monastary of San Giorgio Morgeto, officially

using the name Tommaso in honour of the great saint of the
D’Aquino family.

The town library of San Giorgio Morgeto is named after
“Tommaso Campanella” in honour of the philosopher,

theologist and Dominican priest.

Culinary Excellence

caratteristici del territorio italiano e fondamentale per la nostra cultura culinaria.

Extra virgin olive oil in San Giorgio Morgeto is one of the most characteristic vegetable
based products of the area and it is fundamental in the italian culinary culture.

Every year the olive oil of our fields wins many prizes such as L’Olive d’Or Conest 2016
which was won right here in Canada!

San Giorgio Morgeto- Record Breaking!

A San Giorgio Morgeto, il vicolo più stretto d’Italia. L’antico
e affascinante borgo in provincia di Reggio Calabria, è
caratterizzato dalla ristrettezza dei suoi vicoli, uno di questi,
il Passetto del Re ha conquistato il record di strada più
stretta d’Italia.
Circa 30 scalini, con una larghezza di 40/42
centimetri, collega Largo Sipaleja al piazzale antistante il
Castello Normanno-Svevo.
La denominazione “Passetto del Re”, secondo una
leggenda, è dovuta al fatto che per il Re Morgete,
residente nel castello, costituiva una via di fuga in caso di
attacchi alla fortezza o per le situazioni che lo
costringevano a fuggire.
Così, inoltrandosi nello stretto vicoletto, aveva poi la possibilità di far disperdere le proprie
tracce inoltrandosi nel labirinto di piccole vie all’interno del borgo.
C’è chi racconta anche che Re Morgete, durante la notte, non visto e indisturbato,
attraversava lo stretto vicolo per raggiungere le alcove di compiacenti suddite e cortigiane.
Nella tradizione popolare, percorrere “il Passetto del Re” è un atto di buon auspicio ed in
particolare per coloro che hanno problemi di “cuore”, innamorati e simili.

In San Giorgio Morgeto lies the narrowest alley in Italy. The ancient and captivating town in
the area of Reggio Calabria, is known for it’s narrow streets and

alleys, on of these is the Passetto del Re (The King’s Passage) that
holds the record for being the most narrow street of Italy.

With approximately 30 steps, this alley is 40-42 cm wide and it
connects Largo Spaleja to the antique Norman- Swabian Castle.

According to a legend, the name “Passetto del Re” was the
story of King Morgete, the resident of the Castle, needed a

secret passageway to flee in case of any attacks to the fortress
or other pressing situations that forced the King to get away.
Venturing into the alley, he had the possibility to escape not
leaving a trace within the narrow roads of his town. Others
believe that, during the night, King Morgete was able to
discreetly meet with lovers and harlots.

Traditionally, walking through the “Passetto del Re” brings good luck
especially for people with problems of the heart, lovers, etc.
