Frequently Asked Questions

Dear Children, PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE
Heartiest congratulations on being selected to join the Gifted Education Programme (GEP)!

While you get to know more about the GEP and the 9 schools that offer the programme, let me give you a short introduction of Nan Hua Primary School. We started the GEP in Nan Hua Primary in 1999. The GEP
aims to provide a holistic education by stretching you in both depth and breadth via a differentiated, enriching and dynamic curriculum. The programme is intellectually challenging and the teaching strategies are
learner-centred and creative.

To develop you holistically and to equip you with the 21st century skills and competencies, the school focuses on character development and fostering a love for learning. With student-centricity as our beacon, we
aim to develop in you a lifelong passion for learning where you will have a positive outlook and resilience towards life and future challenges.

In complementing what the GEP offers in terms of intellectual development, Nan Hua Primary aims to build resilient individuals and to nurture every child to become leaders who serve the school and the
community with a heart. Through the CE(Character Education)@NHPS, the school aims to help you flourish and to achieve your highest potential in life. CE@NHPS is built upon the foundation of our school motto
忠孝仁爱礼义廉耻 and focuses on two key approaches: 弟子规 and Positive Education. CE@NHPS is truly our unique platform and a deliberate effort to help every child build resilience, good character and the
ability to thrive in the future so that every Nan Hua student not only become better individuals but also collectively, create a flourishing Singapore.

To further cater to your affective and social needs, Nan Hua Primary provides close monitoring via regular counselling sessions. In-House Counsellors (IHCs) will see you individually or in small-groups in order to
cater to your emotional and moral needs. In addition, our school also provides a wide range of Co-Curricular Activities to cater to the physical and aesthetic development of our children.

The NHPS GEP experience is an integrated one. Primary 4 form classes are organised to include students from both the Gifted Programme and Mainstream. A student who enters the NHPS GEP will join one of
eight Primary 4 form classes. This integration aims to afford greater mixing and to achieve the best balance between stretching the potential of the students and promoting all-round development. This
arrangement allows students to work closer together and make more friends in the school, thus widening social circles and providing opportunities to enhance emotional competencies.

Being a Special Assistance Plan (SAP) school, we provide a conducive environment for the learning of Chinese Language. Efforts are also made to incorporate the use of technology to enrich students’ learning of
the Chinese language and culture. Our children participate annually in Chinese Immersion Exchange Programmes with partner schools in China.

All these quality school-based programmes to support the holistic development of all our children cannot be possible without our team of passionate and dedicated teaching staff in the school. We also work
closely with all parents for our children’s best development.

At the end of 2019, Nan Hua Primary moved back to the revamped school campus at 30 Jalan Lempeng S(128806). With the newly upgraded campus, Nan Hua Primary is better positioned to provide a more
conducive environment to cater to the moral, intellectual, physical, social and aesthetic development of our students.

Do visit our school website at to find out more about us.

Yours truly,
Mrs Ong Hui Khim
Principal
Nan Hua Primary School

Our Vision | A School of Engaged Learners who Lead with Character and Serve with a Heart
Our Mission | Nurturing Gracious Citizens, rooted in Values and Chinese Culture

NH P S

THE NNHPHS P S GEP

The Gifted Education Programme (GEP) was implemented in 1984 to provide an education of quality and relevance which stimulates
individual growth and helps pupils realise their full potential. In 1999, Nan Hua Primary School became the ninth primary GEP centre.

The NHPS GEP is a 3-year programme anchored on the school’s vision to nurture Engaged Learners who Lead with Character and Serve with
a Heart. Our approach puts the child at the centre of learning.

The NHPS GEP experience is an integrated one. A pupil who enters the NHPS GEP will join one of eight Primary 4 form classes. This
integration aims to afford greater mixing and to achieve the best balance between stretching the potential of the pupils and promoting their
all-round development. Working closely together allows them to make more friends in the school, thus widening their social circle and
allowing for their social emotional competencies to be enhanced.

Pupils will be promoted in their form classes enbloc from Primary 4 to Primary 6. Central to our reasoning behind this is the harnessing of the
synergy that exists within each class and that a stable classroom environment leads to inclusivity, confidence and fostering of positive bonds.

In their form classes, pupils take the following subjects/areas:
Art, Music, Physical Education, Health Education & Form Teacher Guidance Period

GEP pupils are pulled out during curriculum time for the following subjects: Character & Citizenship Education, English Language, Higher
Chinese Language*, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, Inquiry Skills (P4) & Individualised Study Options (P5)

*Higher Chinese Language is taught at the enriched level in mixed classes using the GEP enriched curriculum; GEP pupils are integrated with
selected non-GEP pupils.

N H P S GEP ENRICHMENT PROGRAMMES

INQUIRY SKILLS & INDIVIDUALISED STUDY OPTIONS--

P4: Inquiry Skills (IS)
In Primary 4, pupils are all taught core research skills such as library research, data gathering, data analysis and report
writing during their IS lessons to prepare them for project work in the various ISOs in Primary 5.

P5: Individualised Study Options (ISO)
In Primary 5, pupils tap on knowledge and skills learnt in P4 IS to embark on a project in their chosen ISO. NHPS GEP
offers the following ISOs:

● Community Problem Solving Programme (CmPS)
● Individualised Research Study (IRS)
● Innovation Programme (IvP)
● Destination Imagination (DI)

In the implementation of ISO, a teacher-mentor supervises a small number of pupils and provides monitoring and
feedback to encourage and help the pupils as they complete their projects. Parents can also help by providing support,
encouragement and practical assistance such as discussing the project with their child, and helping him/her get
appropriate resources.

N H P S GEP ENRICHMENT PROGRAMMES

COMPUTER ENRICHMENT PROGRAMME (CEP)--

P4: Introduction to Coding Course
In Primary 4, the introductory CEP course aims to arouse pupils' interest and equip them with skills in coding, provide a platform
for pupils to discover and develop their strength in computing/coding, develop pupils' self-confidence and to inculcate values such
as teamwork and discipline in them.

P5: Basic Coding & Robotics Course / Advanced Coding & Robotic Course
In Primary 5, pupils participate in either the Basic or Advanced Coding & Robotics Course based on their aptitude demonstrated in
the P4 CEP course.

ADVANCED MATHEMATICS ENRICHMENT CLASS (AMEC)*--

The aim of AMEC is to provide enriching learning experiences beyond the core curriculum to pupils with exceptional abilities in
Mathematics. AMEC encourage the pupils to explore broader and deeper mathematical concepts, and allow the pupils to focus
their energies on enriched and advanced work in Mathematics over an extended period of time. In AMEC, pupils will be exposed
to various challenging advanced mathematical problems. They will discuss and examine these advanced mathematical concepts in
greater breadth and depth, and learn different and efficient problem-solving strategies to tackle problems.

*AMEC is offered to selected Primary 6 pupils who are mathematically precocious.

FAQ s

This set of FAQs is specific to NHPS.
For general FAQs that apply across all GEP centres, please refer to the resource

(Information for Parents) from the Gifted Education Branch.

Must my child take Higher Chinese Language (HCL) throughout his/her 3 years in NHPS?

We are a Special Assistance Plan (SAP) School whose mission is to nurture gracious citizens, rooted in values and
Chinese culture. The HCL curriculum imbues in students a deeper understanding and appreciation of Chinese
culture All GEP students are strongly encouraged to take HCL from Primary 4 to 6.

Parents and students should carefully consider the student's aptitude and interest in Chinese Language learning
before determining if a SAP school is an ideal option.

We do not live near the school. Are there onsite after-school care and school bus services?

Both are available. For more information, please visit our school website: Student Care Centre | School Bus
Information on the current school bus routes can be found on page 18.
For specific queries, please enquire with the service providers directly.

Will there be any orientation to ease my child into the school?

Students will be informed of their classes on the first day of school. An orientation programme will be conducted
in the first week of school. Buddies will also be assigned to new students. Teachers will offer their support and
guidance to help students adjust to the new environment.

FAQ s

Beside those organised by the Gifted Education Branch (GEB), what other enrichment
programmes does the school offer? What competitions are open to my child?

Besides CCA-related activities, some enrichment programmes and competitions that NHPS students may opt to
participate in are:

● Art Competitions
● Coding Lessons
● Debate Training and Competitions
● Mathematics Olympiad Classes
● Mathematics Olympiads
● Oratorical & Writing (English & Chinese) Competitions
● Science Olympiads
● Sony Creative Toy Making Competition
● STEM Enrichment

Must my child participate in CCA? Can my child take part in more than one CCA?

Participation in CCA is highly encouraged. Students are allowed to take up only one CCA.
A list of the CCAs we offer can be found on page 14.

FAQ s

Will my child automatically be a prefect if he/she was one in his/her previous school?

To allow for a smooth transition, new students will be given time to adapt to the new school environment and
practices. At the end of Primary 4, these students will be eligible for nomination by their teachers to serve as
prefects.

Will my child’s younger sibling(s) be able to enter the school together with my child?

Younger siblings who have not reached primary school age will have priority in the Primary 1 Registration
Exercise when the time comes. Younger siblings who are already in primary schools or have registered for a
primary school (Primary 1 in the following year), they may apply to be on our wait list on our school website.
We operate at maximum enrolment and are unable to facilitate a transfer unless there is a vacancy. That said,
we strive to prioritise applicants with siblings in the school and each applicant will be considered carefully.

What is the DSA success rate for NHPS GEP students?

This varies from year to year. At NHPS, we help students to discover and grow their strengths and interests
through various enrichment programmes in academic and non-academic areas as well as our wide range of
CCAs. Students who demonstrate strong aptitude in their areas of passion have generally found success in the
DSA exercise.
