For over 15 years, The Merseyside, Cheshire & Greater
Manchester Teacher Training Consortium has been
passionate about training quality teachers, and has trained
over 700 people to Newly Qualified Teacher status (QTS).
On the Assessment Only route, which is open to candidates from both
Primary and Secondary, we work with you, as an experienced
Unqualified Teacher, to help you achieve QTS. This route must be
completed within 3 months of acceptance onto the programme. But,
The Consortium will provide with ongoing support and access to quality
advice from experienced professionals.
“The Assessment Only route to QTS offered by
the Consortium is a very bespoke
programme designed for experienced but
unqualified teachers. Having already gained
sufficient proficiency across the full range
of Teachers’ Standards, successful
applicants will be able evidence their
professional skills, knowledge and
understanding to achieve Qualified Teacher
Status within three months of being
accepted on to the
programme.”

A Fail means you will be unable to

advised that you are fully
prepared for Final Assessment
before arranging it.
Portfolio
Your portfolio is a collection of evidence to support satisfactory attainment against the
Teachers' Standards.
The Consortium offers no prescriptive format for your portfolio, but recommends that
two items of evidence within the portfolio should be sufficient evidence against each
sub-section within a standard. Quality evidence may be cross-referenced to different
standards (or sub-section within a standard).
You will need to prepare a reflective statement linking your competence to the
standards, outlining how you have met them. The personal reflective statement should
highlight the particular features and achievements of your time as a teacher that
support your claim as a qualified teacher, based on the evidence contained in your
portfolio.
Your personal reflective statement should be written in the first person and be in such
terms to convince the reader that you meet the Teachers' Standards, and that you are
a worthy entrant to the teaching profession. Evidence
Evidence can take many forms. To qualify as evidence it must comply with certain
'rules':
Valid - The evidence must be teaching evidence and relate to the specific standard.
Substantial evidence will come from formal observations by experienced practitioners.
Authentic The evidence must be clearly shown as your evidence. A word-processed
document would be annotated in your writing, or contain your signature. A witness statement
would contain someone else's signature and refer to you by name. To verify authenticity, ask
yourself, what shows this piece of evidence is yours?
Current - The evidence must be appropriate to the current Teachers' Standards, therefore
should not be more than two years old.
Reliable - The evidence must demonstrate your consistent performance over a period of time.
The Consortium usually expects to see two pieces of evidence that support competence. But,
this evidence will be supported by other pieces of evidence collected over a period of time.
Sufficient - The evidence needs to demonstrate that you can meet the Teachers' Standards
consistently. At least two pieces of evidence are required in your portfolio to cover each
standard, although one piece of evidence could be cross-referenced across more than one
standard.
Our other routes to QTS
School Direct Salaried
The School Direct Salaried programme is an employment based route into Initial
Teacher Training. The trainee must find the support a school, who will employ
them as an Unqualified Teacher for the duration of their training year and pay
their salary and training costs. A £9000 subsidy from the NCTL (National College of
Teaching and Learning) could be issued to the school if the trainee meets their
criteria. This route is not available to Independent Schools.

School / Self-Funded
If you are not eligible for the Assessment Only programme, you may be able to

This year-long programme is exactly the same as the SDS route, only without
funding from the NCTL. Therefore, an applicant without three years full-time
career experience may be able to apply, if they have the support of an
Employing School.
