Introduction

The Navajo tribe was a religious tribe who believed in Gods.

They celebrated these Gods by holding religious rituals and ceremonies.
They also had sacred places to help them worship and they had spiritual leaders
in the tribe.

The Navajo also believed in Spirits that they felt would help them here in the
world.

Navajo Religion

Navajo spiritual practice is about restoring
balance and harmony to a person's life to
produce health and is based on the ideas of
Hózhóójí. The Diné believed in two classes of
people: Earth People and Holy People. As
Earth People, the Diné must do everything
within their power to maintain the balance
between Mother Earth and man [visited via

Ceremonies

Ceremonies

Rituals

The Navajo’s rituals are made
up of gestures, words,
actions, and objects,
performed in a holy place and
according to set sequence.
The holy place is normally on
there land.
Rituals are prescribed by the
traditions of the Navajo
tribes.

Beliefs

The Navajos believed that people passed between 3 different worlds and that there
were 2 classes of people, Earth people and Holy people. Holy people either helped
or hurt the earth. While the Earth people needed to maintain balance on earth. The
Holy people had to teach the Earth people how to live the right way.

The Holy people also put four mountains in 4 directions to create their land. The four
mountains were Mt. Blanca (East), Mt. Taylor (South), San Francisco Peak (West),
and Mt. Hesperus (North). Each mountain had a certain color like white or red.

Festivals

Almost every act of their
life—the building of the hogán,
the planting of crops.—is
ceremonial in nature, each being
attended with songs and
prayers.
There are also many less
important ceremonies occupying
four days, two days, and one
day in their performance. In
these ceremonies many
dry-paintings, or “sand altars,”
are made, depicting the
characters and incidents of
myths
