THREE-LEGGED
RACE

Skills & Fitness: Speed, teamwork, cooperation.
Rules: Divide children into pairs, matching
children of similar height and build. Have each
player stand next to his partner and put his
arm around his partner's waist. Have the
players line up at the starting line. At your
signal, have players jump as fast as they can
to the finish line.
Equipment: Tape, or rope
Space Requirements: Gymnasium floor
Time needed: 10 Minutes

HORSE

Skills & Fitness: Mimic, movement,
memorization.
Rules: Put their basketball skills to the test
by playing horse. Each player has to
imitate the other's basketball shot and if
they miss, they're given a letter. The first
one to complete the word "horse," loses.
Equipment: Basketball
Space Requirements: Gymnasium floor
Time needed: 6 Minutes

THREE FLIES UP

Skills & Fitness: Endurance, be able to
catch.
Rules: There is one thrower; everyone
else is a catcher. The thrower stands
about 50 feet away from the catchers
and then tosses the ball up in the air
towards the catchers. If you catch the
ball, you get a point. First person to
three points becomes the thrower.
Equipment: Gym balls
Space Requirements: Gymnasium floor

MARCO POLO

Skills & Fitness: Response, balance, speed,
sound localization.
Rules: Tne player is chosen as "It". The "It"
player, with closed eyes, tries to find and tag
any one of the other players, relying on
hearing to find someone to tag. The player
who is "It" shouts "Marco" and the other players
must all respond by shouting "Polo", which "It"
uses to try to find them.
Equipment: None required

MOTHER, MAY I?

Skills & Fitness: Speed, response time.
Rules: This game is set up in the same way as Red
Light Green Light. One person in the group asks
the person in the front, "Mother, may I take steps
forward?" The person at the front then says, "Yes,
you may." or "No, you may not." You can vary your
requests by including options such as taking baby
steps, spinning steps, leaps or whatever strikes
your fancy. Again, the first person to tag the
person in the front wins and is the next person in
the front.
Equipment: Small group

SARDINES

Skills & Fitness: Speed, attentiveness,
silence.
Rules: Sardines is the opposite of hide-
and-seek. One person is designated to
hide while the others count. If you find the
hidden person, you join them. Last person
to find them loses.
Equipment: None required
Space Requirements: Gymnasium floor
Time needed: 8 Minutes

SEND ETHAN OVER

Skills & Fitness: Strength, speed, endurance.
Rules: Two groups stand in parallel lines facing
each other. Each line must hold hands. One line
declares one person they would like sent over,
yelling “Red Rover, Red Rover, send Ethan over.”
The designated person — in this case Ethan —
makes a furious run at the line. If he can’t break
the line and get two people to stop holding hands,
the team that held strong calls a person from the
opposing line to their chain. If they can’t, they now
join that line. Whichever line is down to one person
first loses.
Equipment: None required

PICK-POCKET TAG

Skills & Fitness: Speed, ability to catch, fast
response.
Rules: Players have a tail inserted into his/her
belt or pocket that is hanging at the back-side.
All players chase one another trying to collect
tails while protecting his/her own.
Players with the most tails collected in a
specified time are the winners.
Equipment: Flags
Space Requirements: Gymnasium floor
Time needed: 10 Minutes

STUCK IN TIME

Skills & Fitness: Speed, teamwork.
Rules: Sort of like a tag game, if children
are tagged, they must stand with their
position when tagged until someone
crawls through and releases them
allowing them back into the game.
Equipment: None required

Time needed: 10 Minutes

COPS AND
ROBBERS

Skills & Fitness: Speed, fast movement.
Rules: Gather the children outside and divide
them into two groups-the "Cops" and the
"Robbers." Choose an object for the robbers to
try to "steal." To win the game,
the robbers must complete their goal of
stealing or touching this object and escaping
from the cops.
Equipment: An item to steal or touch
Space Requirements: Gymnasium floor
Time needed: 15 Minutes

CAPTURE THE
FLAG

Skills & Fitness: Teamwork, speed,
communication
Rules: After dividing into two teams, one
team tries to steal the other's flag from
their home base before returning back to
theirs.
Equipment: Hand flag
Space Requirements: Gymnasium floor
Time needed: 15 Minutes
Safety tips: Awareness , Do not run into
other players

JUMP!

Skills & Fitness: Speed, elusiveness, endurance
Rules: Have the kids line up against one wall of
the gymnasium or on a boundary line of the
sporting field. Then, simply yell out “1 Jump”
and the kids can take the biggest jump
forward they can do from a standing start. You
can vary this by change the number of jumps
you allow each time and sometimes throwing in
“Steps”.
Equipment: Gym balls.
