Dear All,
Safety Council of Kerala is bringing out this edition of News
magazine on a special occasion, COVID 19 scenario .In the
intervening period from 2018-20, Safety Council of Kerala has conducted many events
like:
COVID-19 SOPs related programme
Disaster management programme
Electrical safety awareness programme
Ensuring workplace safety programme
Training program for Offsite mock drill organized by District Crisis Group.
Waste management Training etc....
For all these events, Director of factories and Boilers and his office extended their un-
solicited support to us and we thank the Director and his team for the same.
Today the shop floor technicians and middle level Managers are better equipped to
face the challenges towards ensuring Safety of the personnel through the constant tai-
lor-made programmes Safety Council of Kerala organized to suit their needs.
As a part of social obligation, Safety council of Kerala is extending Safety awareness
programmes to Academic institutions from schools to colleges which will be further
improved upon this year.
Due to COVID 19 protocol, on site visits and onsite training programmes are suspend-
ed. Under this pretext, Safety council of Kerala has organised webinars using online
tools effectively and the reach of these programmes gained momentum over the last
six months. Experts in the relevant fields contributed to these webinars and this has
helped us to spread our services beyond Palakkad district also, as far the knowledge
dissemination is concerned.
By adapting to the new style of working Safety council of Kerala is confident of
achieving its goals.
Regards,
Kanthimathinathan A

SECRETARY’S REPORTT
Dear All,
I have great pleasure in presenting our endeavor to im-
part safety in the industries in and around Palakkad
through this issue of JAGRATHA.
Earlier we used to conduct classroom sessions training to people.
In the COVID 19 scenario and its related regulations and proto-
cols, assembling people at a place is restricted and social distanc-
ing is enforced. Hence the training in this manner was not able to
continue. So, timely, we shifted to Webinars training sessions.
During this COVID 19 period we have organized 10 Webinar
training sessions attended by 434 persons through 866 man-
hours.
Moreover, due to the COVID 19 restrictions, this issue of
JAGRATHA is a soft copy that too for two years combined.
It is understood that generally there is a reduction in number of
accident observed in almost all Industries . It can be viewed
proudly that our training sessions on various safety related sub-
jects, might have also contributed to this reduction in accidents
along with other parameters.
As we concluded in our Unit Head meeting it is too late to seri-
ously consider safety also as important as our profitability. Any
industry operating without accidents will be making revenue more
and the profitability will be increasing.
Hence, as a practicing safety engineer, I would assure you that if
you consider safety related functions at par with production you
will be having revenue income and profit line at top level.
Wish you all a safe and happy journey in your professional world.
Thanks and regards,
Venugopalan. P

I am convinced that behaviour-based safety (BBS), when imple-

SAFETY TIPS: HEAT STRESS
Compiled By: CYRIL C Y
HSE Manager
ot temperatures combine with factors such as high humidity, hard physical work,
H loss of body fluids, fatigue or some medical conditions can put stress on the
body’s cooling system. When this happens it can lead to a heat related illness or disabil-
ity or even death.
Who’s at Risk?
Heat stress can happen to anybody, even the young and fit, and heat exposure may occur
in all kinds of workplaces. Industrial furnaces, hot work like welding/ grinding ,smelters,
foundries and worksites with heavy equipment are significant sources of heat inside
workplaces. For outdoor workers, direct sunlight is the main source of heat.
Controlling Heat Stress
1. Engineering Controls
Reduce physical demands of work task through mechani-
cal assistance.
Control the heat at its source through the use of insulating
and reflective barriers (e.g. insulate furnace walls).
Exhaust hot air and steam produced by operations.
Reduce the temperature and humidity through air cooling.
Provide cool, shaded work areas.
Increase air movement if temperature is below 35° C (e.g.
use fans).
2. Administrative and Work Practice Controls
Assess the demands of all jobs and have monitoring and control strategies in
ജാഗ്രത 23
place for hot days and hot workplaces.
Increase the frequency and length of rest breaks
Schedule strenuous jobs to cooler times of the day
Cool drinking water near workers and remind them to drink more frequently,
to stay hydrated
General Tips
Drink plenty of water even if you don’t feel thirsty.
Avoid dehydrating beverages containing caffeine.
Eat smaller meals- eat fruits high in
fibre and natural juice, avoid junk
foods.
Stay indoors and out of the sun if possi-
ble. When outdoors wear hat or use an
umbrella.
Dress for the Heat! Wear light coloured, light weight and loose fitting cloths.
Take cool showers and bath, use cool towels around face and neck.
Schedule frequent breaks- Take time for rest periods and water breaks
in a shaded or air conditioned area
When feasible, stressful tasks should be performed during the cooler
part of the day (Morning and late evening).
Never leave children or seniors in a Parked Cars.
Be alert to signs of heat-related illness. Know what to look for and
check on other workers that might be at high risk
