Prologue - An Already Witnessed Departure Yume Irido ◆ The Type Of Person I Like “Irido-san... I like you! Please go out with me!” In response to the earnest boy who bowed his head and declared this, I, Yume Irido, couldn’t help but smile with a sense of warmth. It’s been over a month since I entered my second year, and this was already my third confession. Despite being rather popular in my first year, I never experienced anything like this. However, as soon as I entered my second-year, confessions started pouring in like water from a dam burst. The reason for this, that came to mind, could be pinpointed to a single phrase that my friend, Minami Akatsuki, asked me just after the new year had started. “Yume-chan, do you know how to turn down a confession?” I was confused where such a question had come from, yet somehow responded. “I see. Understood,”Akatsuki-san simply said to my response and left. And right after that, I received my first confession. Well, I had vaguely sensed it before, but it seemed that during my first year, Akatsuki-san had been secretly blocking confessions directed towards me. Upon reaching our second year and observing that things between Mizuto and I—or rather our relationship—had settled, she decided it was no longer necessary and stopped doing so. Certainly, if I had been confessed to at this pace during my first year, it would have been bothersome beyond measure. I might have given careless rejections, leading to unpleasant rumors. But now, I’m different. Though I was nervous, I’m able to respond calmly and confidently. “I’m sorry. I’m already in a relationship.”
The confessing boy raised his head, unabashedly displaying his agitation. “Wh-who is it? What kind of person is he!?” For the third time, I faced such a customary question, so I gave the customary answer, wearing my trademark, unwavering smile. “I guess, the smartest person in this school?” Mizuto Irido ◆ Monopoly “You, cut it out. Don’t arbitrarily raise the bar without the permission of the person in question.” It was night—when both Dad and Yuni-san had gone to sleep early to get ready for their work tomorrow. Yume had secretly come into my room and laid down on my bed. “The rumors have been completely blown out of proportion because you’ve been spreading strange information every time you reject a confession. Now they’re saying things like your boyfriend goes to Havard, or that he’s a member of Mensa International, or that he’s a student entrepreneur, and whatever else that’s been going around…” “Fufu. Maybe they’ll think he’s some great detective too?” “You act like it’s someone else’s problem…” I sighed and sat down beside Yume, who was currently lying down. Yume Irido, the person currently occupying the spot of “most popular” at Rakuro High School. And then there’s her boyfriend shrouded in mystery, none other than her step-sibling and ex-boyfriend from her junior high days—me. I’ll admit, it’s a sensational identity that appeals to the taste of adolescence, but I have no plans to go to Harvard, no fact of being a member of Mensa International, and no history of having started a business.
“Couldn’t you have put it differently? Out of all things, saying ‘the smartest person in the school’ makes me seem even higher than that genius of a Student Council President.” “But that’s exactly why, right? Saying something like a kind person or a cool person might lead to others misunderstanding, or even unwanted assumptions. In that sense, saying ‘the smartest person in the school’ allows us to make President Kurenai act as a breakwater, doesn’t it?” “You’ve become quite impressive. Guess there’s no need to worry about causing misunderstandings then.” “Well, yeah. It’s something you can be proud of, isn’t it? As my boyfriend...” Staring down at Yume, who was proudly explaining that, I suddenly reached out my hand. “Eh? What?” Ignoring Yume’s confusion, I gently traced the lobe of her ear with my fingernail. “...The ace of the baseball team, huh? That guy today.” “It seems so. Though people in this age are generally not as strong in sports, this generation is still quite—” Before she could finish, I covered Yume without warning. With my hands on the bed, I enveloped Yume under my shadow, peering into the surprised eyes of my lover, who blinked in astonishment. Eventually, Yume, with a mix of irritation and teasing in her smile, asked, “Is this your possessiveness?” I didn’t answer. I could only stare into Yume’s eyes, appealing in silence. Amused by my state, Yume continued to laugh softly for a while.
“Is it okay?” she said, smiling tenderly. “To have me monopolized by you?” Like a dog released from its wait command, I embraced Yume’s body and pressed my lips against hers. A kiss a bit rougher than usual, almost as if I was devouring her. With each entwining of our tongues, seductive sighs leaked out from Yume’s throat. I continued until I was satisfied, and when I finally pulled away, Yume, with a flushed face, smiled and teased, “You’ve become quite something, haven’t you? Having the most beautiful girl in the grade all to yourself.” “...Keep on getting carried away like that and I’ll leave a hickey.” “Ah, stop, stop! ...Don’t sulk. I just wanted to tease you because you’re unusually cute, you know?” Feeling tired from the position of pinning Yume down, I rolled to her side on the bed, still embracing her.
Gently bumping foreheads, we conversed in hushed tones. “It seems like you’re getting confident with all these confessions you’re receiving, but... I’ve been on that receiving end too, you know?” “Eh? Is that so? From whom?” “I don’t know. There was a note inside my desk.” “Maybe it’s a prank.” “I’m technically supposed to be going out with Isana at school. Well, it’s just a misunderstanding among everyone—but would you play a prank on someone with a girlfriend?” “Hmm... I see.” “You surprisingly don’t pry much.” “Well, it feels a bit distasteful, doesn’t it? Doing this kind of thing while cuddling...” “Like we’re giggling at someone?” “Exactly. Knowing how much courage it takes to confess...” How kind of her to say. “Take it seriously, okay? Properly.” “I understand.” “And, just kissing for today. Anything beyond that is a no.” “Eh?” “Obviously, I wouldn’t like it if I was in their shoes either. To muster the courage for a serious confession, to only have the person you confessed to indulge in such intimacy...” ...After inviting me like that... This girl! As I started to regret saying such things, Yume whispered with an even softer voice, looking a bit embarrassed. “(So before the school trip... I’ll make sure to give you plenty.)”
As she said this with intense emotion in her eyes, I looked at the face of my lover up close, who seemed to regret saying it outright like that, as a magma-like feeling overflowed in my chest. “(...Then it’s okay if it’s just a kiss for now, right?)” “Eh?—Mnm!” We would have no time for this kind of thing during the school trip. Our relationship was just a secret known only to very few close friends. So, towards that cheat day just before, I’ll charge up now. Regret my thoughtless remarks all you want. ...But before that. I have to take care of things properly with whoever left that note, without leaving any chance for misunderstanding, so as not to sow the seeds of trouble later— “I like you. Please go out with me.” “......” I was left speechless. In a voice that didn’t convey any tension or emotion, she declared clearly. A girl with a petite body, resembling that of a junior highschooler, but with a mature and glamorous figure where it counted. Ran Asuhain. She was also a Student Council member like Yume, and she was known as the girl who disliked guys the most in this school. ...Didn’t something like this happen about a year ago as well?
Chapter 1 - The First Day Of Getting Closer Yume Irido ◆ Group Of Six After riding the bus from school for over an hour, the students of Rakurou High School gathered in the open space on the first floor of Osaka Airport Station, where the monorail was located. The open space, resembling a multilevel parking lot with only columns and a ceiling but no walls, offered a view across the road to the terminal of Osaka International Airport (also known as Itami Airport). It was currently mid-May, and the weather was cloudy. For Rakurou High School, this year’s destination for the school trip was Okinawa. A luxurious three nights and four days awaits us students, mixed up with marine activities for education, group activities for exploring tourist attractions, and accommodation at a private resort hotel with a pool. Since the Student Council Secretary was involved in creating the itinerary, I knew the schedule better than anyone else. Junior high school trips were generally gloomy events for me as I had only a few friends back then. However, this year was different. My pre-determined group of six, mixed with both boys and girls, were fortunately composed of people I had fostered deep connections with throughout the past year. “Yume-chan, Yume-chan! Did you bring your own shampoo? Let’s exchange them at night!” “Sure, but... what’s with the idea?” “I want to be enveloped in Yume-chan’s scent!” The girl expressing her desires with sparkling eyes was Minami Akatsuki. Despite her petite and cute stature and her lively ponytail, she had recently been catching my attention little by little. There was also the occasional dangerous look in her eyes that she would reveal. Next to her was a boy, stifling a yawn, with brightly dyed hair.
“So sleepy... It’s too early for a meeting time...” He was the third member of our group, Kogure Kawanami. He and Minami are childhood friends, and apparently, they often share a good atmosphere between themselves when no one’s looking. However, he’s a proudly identified “romance-ROM enthusiast” [1] and had no intention of engaging in romance himself. Still, he loves hearing about the love affairs of others. Although he usually played the role of a cheerful mood-maker, the early morning meeting time had affected him, making him less lively than usual. However, there was someone even less lively, constantly nodding off with closed eyes as if she was in a rowing boat. “...Unyi...” “Oi, Isana. Don’t go back to sleep yet.” “...Fuah!?? Is it the deadline already!?” Isana was lightly shaken by Mizuto, and she anxiously looked around as if she was being chased by someone. She was the fourth member of our group, Isana Higashira. A shy otaku who possessed an unusual personality, her distinct feature was her well-developed bust that defied typical high school proportions. Originally, she was Mizuto’s female friend, but through Mizuto, she became friends with Minami and I as well. But right after we met initially, she was somewhat a so-called love rival... But through various circumstances, Mizuto is now Isana’s one and only closest friend, and he manages her activities as an illustrator. The frequency of which they talk with each other might not differ so much from that of a romantic or familial relationship. However, we’ve sorted things out through proper communication, so everything has turned out fine. The fifth member mentioned earlier is Mizuto Irido. He’s been hiding the fact that we’re dating from everyone except the previous three, but surprisingly, he fitted right into our group through being viewed as my step-sibling by everyone else. Well, actually, his close relationship with Isana, who is a female friend, has led our classmates (and our parents) to think that he’s dating
her. So, it became a predetermined route for him to join this group where Isana is in the first place. Mizuto left Isana, who had just woken up, in her place and approached me, who was on the edge of the group. “Do you think we can depart on time, group leader?” “If we don’t, it’s over. We can’t delay the plane schedule.” The teachers were taking attendance right now. Once that’s done, we’ll head to the airport and board the plane. Actually, it’s my first time flying, and I was a bit nervous. Mizuto approached me and spoke in a hushed voice. “...Are you really okay?” Although his question lacked a subject, I immediately understood the meaning behind his words. Mizuto was referring to the sixth member of our group. She was currently sitting behind Isana, dozing off and not doing anything, hugging her knees. Ran Asuhain, a member of the Rakurou High School Student Council like myself—the girl who recently confessed to my boyfriend. I had heard the story from Mizuto himself a while ago; which he deemed necessary to share. He apparently rejected her, justifying along the lines that he already had a girlfriend. But what surprised Mizuto was Asuhain-san’s response to that answer. “—Then, it’s alright with you if I just like you, right?” The boy-hating Asuhain-san had uttered such noble words... I can’t believe she would even do such a thing after spending six months in the Student Council with her. “Since when?” Receiving the report, I asked while shuddering at my boyfriend who seemed to be the plain-girl killer type. Well, Asuhain-san has a serious and diligent character, not flashy at all, but her minimal yet dynamic attraction, along with her doll-like
cute face, makes her too distinct to be called plain. However, despite her appeal, she dislikes guys so much to the point of being considered a hard-to-approach beauty, so much so that no one has come forward to confess to her. How did he end up attracting that kind of girl...? With Higashira-san too? I wonder if this guy emits some kind of pheromone that attracts certain types of girls? “I’m the one who wants to know that.” Mizuto said with a furrowed brow. “My interactions with Asuhain have been minimal since last year’s Kobe trip. I don’t recall raising any flags [2] to be confessed to.” “Really? You didn’t unconsciously do something? Like driving away persistent pick-up attempts?” “Is there someone who can unconsciously do something like that?” “The President seems to be able to.” “Don’t compare me to that person.” Asuhain-san, who generally avoided deep connections with others, admires one person wholeheartedly—our Student Council president, Suzurin Kurenai. Asuhain’s admiration for her was likely based on some encounter with her where she was inspired. “Besides, she didn’t seem to genuinely like me. There was no emotion in her words, and she didn’t seem nervous or stif . I thought it might be some kind of punishment game, but there were no spectators following her... It’s weird.” “I think she’s too big of a target for that sort of thing...” Seemingly unaware of it himself, this guy’s actually secretly popular with the girls. It’s not to elevate him as a boyfriend, but Mizuto, who acts cool and doesn’t talk much at school, excels academically. This gives him a mature aura and cool image to the high-achieving girls in our school. Furthermore, he’s dating (or appearing to date) Higashira-san, who looks like a plain girl at first glance, which only adds
to the allure. It was like he’s the living person of their dreams and fantasies... Looking back from our junior high school days when he was your average guy, he’s really come a long way. By the way, in this scenario, Higashira-san, who seems to be in a relationship with him, might receive envy, but it surprisingly didn’t seem to bother her much. I speculate that it’s thanks to the influence of Akatsuki-san, although she doesn’t directly intervene. Anyway, Asuhain-san’s confession invokes suspicion from me rather than jealousy. It’s full of discomfort, and I’ve still yet to believe it actually happened. Perhaps this is my escapist thinking in action, not wanting to believe the fact that my boyfriend had been confessed to by a girl I knew well. ...Actually, even though I have no memory of Mizuto doing anything, I have the slightest of ideas. Ever since becoming a second-year student, I feel like Asuhain-san’s been avoiding me. Of course, we talk normally during Student Council work, but based on her words and mannerisms, it somehow... feels like she’s keeping a distance. It’s not clearly expressed, but it’s like the feeling of when a dog that’s passing by suddenly moves away from you, a somewhat self-conscious, overdramatic feeling. But what if it wasn’t just my imagination? Maybe because she started to like Mizuto, she might be feeling awkward around me, his step-sister. It makes sense in a way. Or maybe she found out that Mizuto and I are dating behind our backs... Anyway, there’s no way to reason why people fall in love. A girl who hated guys until yesterday suddenly awakening to romance today is not impossible to say. And I have no right to blame her for that. If Mizuto doesn’t want to be approached by her, he could publicly announce that we’re in a relationship. Nevermind our family circumstances, if he doesn’t do that, we won’t be able to deny Asuhain-san’s feelings. The reason I invited Asuhain-san to the group was also for that. But originally, Asuhain-san was not the type to blend into the class as well as the likes of Mizuto or Higashira-san. Moreover, she
avoided even me, the only one she had a proper connection with—therefore she was completely out of place in the new class. I didn’t want to force her, but still, if I could help her blend into the class a little, I thought it would be for the better... That’s what I was thinking just before. So her confession and that matter should be considered separately. Of course, it would be awkward to be in the same group with the person who rejected her confession, but still, I thought it would be better than being mixed into a group of people she didn’t know... so I asked her to join my group. “...Well, if you’re okay with it I guess.” Amidst the voices in the plaza on the first floor of the monorail station, Mizuto continued, “She might make advances during the trip if she has any ulterior motives. I’ll report if anything happens.” “That’s not a big deal. More importantly, pay attention to ensure Asuhain-san can enjoy the school trip properly, okay?” “...You’ve become quite composed. It’s hard to believe you’re the same person who used to get mad at me for talking with other girls a little.” “As long as you don’t get any strange thoughts, that is.” “That doesn’t happen, normally.” “Really?” “I mean you’re cuter.” I was surprised for a moment at his casually dropped words, creating a brief pause. “Well...” I lightly tap Mizuto’s shoulder to conceal my embarrassment. It’s quite something to clearly say that to Asuhain-san, who is an extremely rare natural beauty.
“Please take your seats! And be quiet, please!” The teacher’s voice echoed, signifying the start of role call. After the roll call, it seemed the presentation from the travel agency was about to start. We need to return to our group. Thinking that, as we started to walk, Mizuto approached me for a moment and whispered. “(Let’s make time somewhere today.)” During the school trip, we’d spend most of the time with the class. Naturally, this means there’s almost no time for us to spend as lovers. He’s saying that he wants to find a way to make some time... for us. That Mizuto is saying this on his own! “(Yeah. Sure.)” I reply with a relaxed smile. I want to show our junior high school selves what being lovers is like. Mizuto Irido ◆ A Kind Gyaru With A Gentle Demeanor With a “bing” sound, the seatbelt sign on the ceiling disappeared, and next to me, Isana let out a deep sigh. “T-Thank goodness...” “You’re being dramatic. Besides, we’re still flying. Want to look outside?” “I-I won’t look! Are you trying to kill me!?” The plane had just safely completed its takeoff and entered its cruising altitude. It seems Isana, who’s on a plane for the first time, has been tense since she sat down until just now. With a dissatisfied expression, Isana says, “Mizuto-kun, is this your first time too? On a plane I mean... You don’t have to act tough, but you can cling to me if you want.”
“I know it’s easy for me to say, but the probability of a plane crash is lower than that of a car accident. I believe in those probabilities.” “For someone inherently in the humanities, you have a scientific way of thinking...” There was a bit of turbulence during takeoff, but once we entered cruising mode, I found it more comfortable than a bus. You can even watch movies on the monitor in front of you. Not bad at all. “I can’t calm down... I don’t even have a tablet...” “There’s no helping it since bringing smartphones and tablets is prohibited on the school trip. Using a sketchbook as a substitute is still better for you.” “Isn’t that outdated? What do you do when you want to contact someone?” “The group leaders are given mobile phones for communication. We can also use it to check maps.” “Not being able to use the internet for four days... my head will go crazy!” “You’ve been complaining non-stop. Do you dislike the idea of going on this school trip?” “It’s because...” Isana shrinks her shoulders and says, “On the second day, there’s snorkeling...!” “I told you. It’s okay even if you can’t swim. You’ll just float around with a life jacket.” “But we have to wear swimsuits...! I thought I would never have to wear one again in my life...!” “We’ve already talked about that too, right? You’re wearing a wetsuit over it so it doesn’t matter.” “But now, I have to go on a diet, don’t I!?”
In response to her indignant assertion, I let the corners of my mouth loosen. “Then it’s the perfect opportunity, isn’t it? You were getting more and more unhealthy, after all.” “Grr...” The schedule for the afternoon of the second day included a marine experience course, which involved snorkeling, and several other optional courses. One of the reasons I chose the marine experience, despite my close friend Isana’s objection, was her overwhelming lack of exercise. As planned, involving Yume and Minami, we were able to address Isana’s lack of exercise—according to what I heard from Yume, it turned out her belly was indeed a bit soft. Of course, that wasn’t the only reason. I thought that experiencing the world underwater would be enriching for her as an illustrator. It’s not every day you get to go snorkeling unless it’s a school trip, after all. “You say that, but maybe you were just looking forward to seeing me in a swimsuit~?” With a sly and somewhat lewd grin, my female friend continued, “You’re so shy Mizuto. Even though I would have shown you anytime if you asked—wait, actually hold that thought. My mom told me, ‘If someone like you wears a swimsuit on a school trip, all the boys will explode and die.’” “I apologize that I need to fulfill your need for approval, but I’m already satisfied in that area.” “Hoho. But can she compete with my H-cups?” “She’s quite sizable too.” “Oh-ho!” With an uncomfortably excited voice, Isana leaned in closer to me, lowering her voice. “(With that slender body? How big are they? How big are they? Just tell me already, please!)”
“You’re, how should I put it... You’re more like a guy than an actual guy.” Maybe it was because she’s a girl that I had let my guard down a little bit, but her way of showing interest in someone else’s girlfriend was more intense than that of a guy’s. “Ehehe... so it’s true that they get bigger when you fondle them. If that’s the case, being rejected was the right answer for me. If we were dating, the sheer size would have significantly disrupted my daily life by now.” “Be grateful for my wise decision.” “Well, it’s not too late to start now.” “I’ll refrain since it would interfere with your task of drawing illustrations.” “Oh~! The epitome of a manager not swayed by lust!” “More like the epitome of being a rational human.” I don’t want to default to being swayed by lust. As I continued my usual communication with Isana, a bright voice interrupted us from the front seat. “What’s going on? Are you guys talking about something naughty?” Peeking her face from the headrest of the front seat is a girl with flashy, curling, brightly colored hair. The type that looks to be loud. I looked up at her face and searched my mind as I tried to recall her name. “Um... Yoshino, right?” “Hey, what’s with the fuzzy memory! We’ve been classmates for a month now. It’s Yako Yoshino! ‘Ya’ from Yayoi Period and ‘ko’ from Ono no Imoko. Don’t erase it from your memory just because I look a bit like a gyaru, Mizuto-kun!”
Our class, Class 2-7, was a bit noisier compared to last year. More than half of the reason for this change was Yako Yoshino, a unique standout in this advanced school. She had dyed and styled hair, wore her uniform loosely, and of course, caught the attention of the teachers. Surprisingly, she excelled academically and, thanks to her friendly nature, became the class coordinator, managing to escape serious consequences. There were absurd rumors (according to Kawanami) that in her first year, she had a relationship with all the boys in the class, but judging by her behavior over the past month, she seemed like the friendly girl who dresses a bit boldly—someone you find in any class. It’s unusual for me to remember just one classmate so well, but that’s because she often talks to Isana. According to Isana, she proves the point that “There really are gyarus who are kind to otakus.” Well, it’s more like she’s kind to everyone. By the way, Isana had illustrated a gyaru once before, and it seems that Yoshino was her model. Though she really doesn’t add a ‘shi’ to the end of her sentences. [3] Looking up at Yoshino’s overly familiar smile, I respond.
“Calling a guy by his first name out of the blue is not something some people might appreciate. You might come off as too familiar.” “Eh~? It’s no big deal~. Calling you Irido-kun would confuse me with you and Yume-chan, plus Isana-chan has been saying ‘Mizuto-kun’ this whole time so it kinda stuck in my head... Ah, could it be...” Yoshino smirks like a cat and continues teasingly. “Is that way of addressing what you reserved only for your beloved girlfriend? Uhehehehe! You show off!” ...By the way, she is, by far, the one who teases Isana and I the most in our class. Though I’ve explained that we’re just friends, the more I deny it, the more she gets excited, so I gave up after some point. “You can do as you like... Just be careful not to get stabbed by some misunderstanding guy.” “Thanks for the warning~☆ I’m used to that kind of thing, so no worries.” “—Oi! Don’t stand up unless you need to go to the bathroom!” As the teacher’s reprimanding voice interrupted us, Yoshino, who was peeking over our seats, replied with a, “Yeaaah, sorryyy!” and pulled her face back behind the headrest. Thinking about being entangled with her for a whole year, I can’t help but feel for Isana. Although, from her perspective, it might be some sort of salvation. Looking next to me, Isana’s head has gently leaned onto my shoulder. “...Zzz...zzz...” Come to think of it, waking up early must have pushed her to her limits, but she was so noisy up until a moment ago that I forgot about that. And once we arrive in Okinawa, there won’t be any time for us to sleep until night, so I’ll let her sleep as much as possible now. “......”
I felt a gaze stabbing me from somewhere—specifically, from the direction where Minami-san’s voice is coming from—in other words, from where Yume is. I decided to not notice it for now, though. Yume Irido ◆ Arrival At Okinawa “It’s hot...” Exiting the arrival lobby of Naha Airport, I was immediately enveloped in the heat. While Kyoto still had many cool days ahead, Okinawa was already experiencing full summer mode. The temperature exceeded 25 degrees, almost approaching 30 degrees—and although I had imagined a dry heat, it was surprisingly humid. The schedule for the first day of the school trip required us to stay in our uniforms until we arrived at the hotel in the evening. And of course, since we didn’t have a seasonal uniform change yet as it was still relatively cold in Kyoto, everyone was in their long-sleeved uniforms. The students from Rakurou, who were usually accustomed to the hellishly hot Kyoto summer, let out groans as they rolled up their shirt sleeves as they passed through the automatic doors. “Ugh~ It’s so hooot~! Good thing I brought a mini fan~!” While facing the wind from her small fan, Akatsuki-san asked, “Yume-chan, are you okay? Wanna borrow my fan?” “I brought a hat, so I’m fine. I wish I had an umbrella, but... it would just be too bulky.” “An umbrella! That would look so cute with you!” From behind the sparkling-eyed Akatsuki-san, a weary-looking Higashira-san and Mizuto emerged. “The heat is unbearable right after waking up...” “You should have at least gotten ready beforehand... Anyway, drink some water.” Mizuto attentively took care of her. Earlier, he had lent his shoulder to the sleeping Higashira-san, and it would be unreasonable to claim they aren’t dating after seeing that. Well, it’s been a year since
we’ve met Higashira-san—and I’ve already gotten used to it, but I do have the right to demand compensation as his genuine lover. The issue is when will we get some time alone together... “Group leaders, gather!” The teacher commanded, and so, as our group leader, I headed there quickly. They started distributing what turned out to be foldable mobile phones with lots of buttons, resembling a calculator. “Wow, seriously! Is this a flip phone? I think it’s my first time seeing a real one!” Yoshino-san exclaimed beside me. In our class, class 2-7, there are five groups, each with its group leader, and she is one of them. With a hand adorned with what seemed like a slightly expensive wristwatch, she fiddled with the mobile phone, asking, “Sensei! Can you use Instagram on this?” “You can’t. That’s why we’re giving you guys flip phones. It can call, take pictures, and has a digital map, so use them effectively. It’s also a rental, so don’t break it.” “Ugh. What’s the point of having a phone that can’t see Instagram or TikTok? Hey, Yume-chan?” Suddenly addressed, I was a bit surprised but gracefully responded with a sympathetic smile. “Yeah. I wouldn’t use my phone that much if it wasn’t for those apps either.” “Right~!? But I guess it’s fine as long as the camera works!” Turning on a dime, Yoshino-san cheerfully returned to her group. Yoshino-san was the type with a different kind of brightness than Akatsuki-san and always surprises me with her all-encompassing approach. If it were my junior high school days, she would have been the type I could never approach, but whether it’s because I’ve grown or if
Yoshino-san’s amazing, we were able to talk normally despite being in different groups. Returning to my group’s place, Akatsuki-san immediately noticed the flip phone in my hand. “Uwaah! It’s a flip phone! I’ve never seen one before! Let me hold it for a bit, let me!” “Sure, just don’t break it.” Joined by Kawanami-kun, Akatsuki-san played with the flip phone curiously. Is she unexpectedly fond of gadgets? Mizuto continued to take care of Higashira-san as usual, meaning the only other member left—Asuhain-san—was a little away, simply gazing at the blue sky of Okinawa. Asuhain-san and I were even seated close to each other on the airplane, but in the end, we didn’t exchange a single word. I wanted to ask about her confession to Mizuto... I wanted to bring it up somehow, but I couldn’t even grasp a starter for such a conversation. It’s unimaginable that this girl is in love. The girl who had erected an invisible wall around her so thick that even with prior notice, I couldn’t have guessed it. However... I wouldn’t accomplish anything by just hesitating. The school trip has already begun. Even if I would come off as a bit forceful, I decided to start a conversation. With that determination, I took a step toward Asuhain-san. “Asuhain-san, are you okay? Did you bring a hat or something?” Asuhain-san glanced at my face briefly and immediately averted her eyes, saying, “I applied sunscreen. Don’t worry.” “...I see.” End of conversation. I’ve thought about this before, but I don’t seem to have what it takes to be a detective.
Mizuto Irido ◆ Imitation After lunch, we moved to the Peace Memorial Park by bus. It’s a place with a museum dedicated to the Battle of Okinawa, during the Pacific War, and monuments engraved with the names of fallen soldiers. The reason Okinawa was chosen as the destination for the school trip seemed embodied in this facility. Walking on the pure white cobblestone path between the dozens of square-shaped memorial stones arranged in a radial pattern, even I, who generally disliked being overly sentimental, couldn’t help but feel the solemn atmosphere. After touring the museum and participating in ceremonies as young people responsible for our country’s future, we had some time to kill before the bus departed. While my classmates went to see a playground for children near the parking lot, I, avoiding the sunlight and noise, got on the bus ahead of time and opened the paperback book I had brought along with me. At times like these, people who rely on entertainment on their smartphones are at a disadvantage. While schools might prohibit the use of smartphones, they rarely forbid reading books on school trips. ...Or perhaps, I thought it might be a chance to spend the time I promised with Yume this morning, but she had already left somewhere with Akatsuki-san and others early on. In moments like these, I couldn’t help but think that my junior high days, when I could act freely as a shadowy background character, were more convenient. As I was engrossed in the text of the paperback, another person boarded the bus where only I was present. I didn’t give it much attention, focusing on the characters in the book. However, when that person chose the seat next to mine, I couldn’t help but divert my gaze. It was Ran Asuhain. In the midst of all the empty seats, this girl deliberately chose to sit next to me, sitting with her hands on her lap, facing the headrest of
the front seat, without saying a word, displaying her well-arranged features. It seemed like she wanted to say something, but at the same time, she exuded an atmosphere as if she wanted to stay silent. While ignoring her might have been an option, I felt that if I didn’t correctly grasp her intentions, it might leave potential problems in Yume’s relationships to come. I reluctantly closed the book, placing my finger between the pages of where I stopped, and spoke to Asuhain without looking at her face. “What’s your intention?” “Is it not allowed to sit next to someone you like?” It was like she had prepared those lines in advance. Suppressing a sigh, I asked, “Do you have no intention of giving up?” “I already answered that, didn’t I?” “So, is this your attempt to flirt with me?” “That seems to be the case.” “...Well, fine. Suit yourself.” Thinking it might be interesting to see where this would go, I opened the pages of the paperback again. For a while, only the sound of the flipping of pages echoed. “......” “......” There was no sign of Asuhain trying to start a conversation. Glancing sideways, she seemed to have her eyes wander around as her body tensed with nervousness. Just by looking at that, anyone could guess what the situation was. “...If you don’t know how to approach this situation, why not just say so?” “......”
Asuhain looked awkward and blushed slightly. Counting from the confession, this might be her most charming reaction. “Hey, Asuhain.” Staring straight at her profile, I spoke. “I’ll be clear. I haven’t taken your confession seriously at all. I suspect you have some other hidden intention. If you tell me the real reason straightforwardly, I can focus on the school trip too.” I thought I was a bit more probing, but both she and I seemed to be inexperienced in such matters. In that case, there was nothing left but to ask her this straightforwardly. After a pause of about five seconds, Asuhain answered. “The real reason...? I like you, and I want to date you. That’s all.” “That’s far-fetched. When did you start liking me, and for what reason?” “Well...” This time, Asuhain remained silent for about ten seconds. “You were the most... suitable. The other guys all seemed like they had stupid heads... I couldn’t imagine having a decent conversation with any of them. In that regard, you have the top grades among the guys, and you don’t seem like the type to act impulsively.” “...So, if you were to have a boyfriend, there were no other choices besides me?” “Yes... that’s right.” “That sounds strange. It’s almost as if you have some urgent reason to get a boyfriend.” Asuhain tightened her lips. “Did your parents decide on an arranged marriage? If you want to pretend to be in a relationship to avoid that, I’m willing to help, you know?”
“There’s no such story. My family is just an ordinary one.” Answering my joke with utmost seriousness, Asuhain stared back at me strongly. “Am I really that undesirable? Please tell me what I’m lacking.” “I already told you. I have someone I’m already dating.” “Is it Higashira-san? If that’s the case, I think I can fulfill your needs in that regard too.” Asuhain said, while placing her hands as if covering her ample bosom. I furrowed my brow and stared back at her large eyes. “There are three things you need to know.” “...What are they?” “First, Isana is just a regular female friend. Second, don’t talk about the merits of my friend as if the only thing she has going for her is her chest.” “...I feel like you often say that about her yourself.” “I’m the only one allowed to say it.” Moving onto my third point, I continued, “According to Yume, you hate being seen that way the most, don’t you? And that you became averse to men due to being teased by boys when you were young—” Yume heard that she became averse to men because she was teased by boys when she was young. She probably dislikes her own figure. Yet, saying that her only value lies in that and trying to attract men was beyond her usual behavior. As soon as I pointed it out, Asuhain lost her spirit and muttered with a downturned gaze. “Yeah... that’s right. Exactly.”
“I don’t know much about you, but this doesn’t seem like your usual behavior. I’m asking you to tell me the reason—I don’t intend to make things difficult for you.” “...Being my usual self, huh...” In a faint, hoarse voice, Asuhain muttered, “I haven’t understood that for a long time...” A heartfelt pleading, yet a lost one. Since her confession, it was the first time I felt like I heard her true words. “...Can I ask you something?” Before waiting for an answer, Asuhain leaned against my shoulder. Using my shoulder as a pillow—yes, like how Isana had slept on the plane. But I immediately realized that she was imitating her. “It seems... when you get close to the opposite sex, your heart starts pounding, huh?” Remaining in that position, Asuhain spoke. Feeling the weight of her head on my shoulder, I replied with a, “Most of the time.” “Are you feeling excited right now?” It seemed to be an important question for her. So, I decided to answer honestly. “No, I’m not. I already have someone who makes me feel that way.” I had also gotten used to my distance with Isana. At this point, such things wouldn’t unsettle me. Above all, I wasn’t so pure as to become interested in someone who was clearly not interested with me in the first place. “I see...”
Somewhat disappointed, but also seemingly relieved, Asuhain murmured. She was hiding something. It was evident, but probably, it was buried too deep in her heart for someone like me to reach. “—Gotcha!” At that moment, a loud voice approached the bus, and Asuhain’s head bounced off my shoulder as she moved away. Soon after, Yako Yoshino and her two friends boarded the bus. Seeing Asuhain sitting next to me, the three froze for a moment, then, led by Yoshino, they approached us. “Hmm? It’s Ran-chan!” While her tone was cheerful, it also had a somewhat chilly vibe. “Wait... was that ever Ran-chan’s seat?” The gazes of the three pierced Asuhain. After looking up at Yoshino’s face for a while, Asuhain, catching her gaze, said, “Right, sorry.” With that, she stood up gracefully. Asuhain then moved to a window seat away from me, and Yoshino and her friends, chattering away, shifted to the seats at the back. ...There shouldn’t have been any specific seating arrangements on the bus, but it seemed something was happening behind my back—of that, I was certain. Yume Irido ◆ Loosening Up With The Absence Of The Opposite Sex Our first day’s accommodation was at what seemed to be a luxurious hotel resort. In advance, the teacher distributed card keys to each group, and we entered through the group entrance on the basement floor. The spacious lobby seemed to connect to a vast banquet hall, reminiscent of a wedding venue. This was probably the venue for dinner.
The time was late afternoon, around 5 pm. Before dinner, we had to take our luggage to our rooms and change from our uniforms to casual clothes. This was a rule set by the hotel, and it seemed that walking around the premises in uniforms was not allowed. So, we all took the elevator to the upper floors. The rooms for the girls of Class 2-7 were on the seventh floor. With four people per room, and since there were exactly four girls in the group, we naturally became roommates. That is, me, Akatsuki-san, Higashira-san, and Asuhain-san. Inserting the card key into the card switch next to the entrance, the room lit up. It was a room with two large beds placed facing each other. At the back, there was a window that offered a panoramic view of Naha City. “Phew... it was so hot today...” Higashira-san placed her bag near the bed and collapsed onto it, facing upward. As I inserted the card key, the air conditioner started working, and she was positioned to receive the breeze all over her body. Following with an excited tone, Akatsuki-san said, “The bed is huge! Hey, hey, which one do you guys want? I call dibs next to Yume-chan!” “Hmm... I feel endangered by that idea, so no.” “Rude! Then, next to Higashira-san!” “Ah... I sense impure motives, so no.” “What do you two think of me!?” Laughing, I placed my luggage next to the bed where Higashira-san was lying down. Naturally, Akatsuki-san would end up next to Asuhain-san, but well, Akatsuki-san wouldn’t go as far as to make a move on Asuhain-san. Even though she groped her chest when they first met... Sitting on the bed, I took a breath. Higashira-san, who had been basking in the air conditioner’s breeze all over her body, rolled over and turned her body towards me. Then, without changing her expression, she spoke.
“Thinking that Yume-san will sleep right next to me... feels kind of erotic, doesn’t it?” “...Maybe I should sleep next to Asuhain-san after all.” “I apologize for the sexual harassment! I don’t want to lose my chastity to Minami-san, so please stay here!” “Uoi! Want me to make you lose it now!?” With a remarkable leap, Akatsuki-san dove onto Higashira-san’s body and buried her face in those ample breasts. Higashira-san screamed in a somewhat unclear manner, “Nugyaa! It’s getting bigger~!” “It’s fine to play around, but could you both change first?” To the delighted Akatsuki-san and the struggling Higashira-san, I continued, “You must have sweated, right? If you stay like that, the sheets will get dirty.” “Oh right, I want to change too.” Saying that, Akatsuki-san didn’t move away from Higashira-san and grinned as she looked at the subdued girl. “Higashira-san, shall I undress you?” “Eh...?” While Higashira-san was in a state of confusion, there was an audible pop, and a single button popped off. The upper part of Higashira-san’s chest, hidden by the uniform, was exposed. “Wait... s-stop! Stop, please! This is kind of... lewd!” “Shall I undress you~? Want me to undress you~? What kind of bra are you wearing~?” “This is too arousing! It’s getting too arousing! The (self-censorship) in my heart!”
Words that didn’t seem at all fitting for a maiden spilled out, and I felt my face heat up a little. So this is what happens as soon as the boys’ were gone! “Follow suit then! Your body is too dahm erotic!” “At least, at least be gentle...!” “Hey, both of you! I get that you’re excited, but refrain from saying indecent things! Asuhain-san is here too, you know!?” Higashira-san and Akatsuki-san looked at me in unison and then began whispering to each other in hushed voices. “(Speaking frankly, she’s the most familiar with that sort of experience right, right?)” “(That’s right. Even though she’s constantly stuffing her face with it, it’s enviable...)” “Hey! I can hear you!” I grabbed a pillow and threw it at them, and the two screamed with delight. I glanced at Asuhain-san, but it seemed like she hadn’t heard that. She remained indifferent, taking off her uniform shirt and wiping her cleavage with a handkerchief. “Uwa... I get that...” Watching her, Higashira-san, who had raised her upper body, explained, “It accumulates sweat there... And if you leave it, it gets itchy.” Asuhain-san reacted and looked towards Higashira-san. “...That’s right. Summer is troublesome.” “And when you switch to summer clothes, your bra becomes see-through.” “But if you wear an undershirt, it gets too hot...” “That’s true! It just makes you sweat even more!”
Hearing their conversation, Akatsuki-san was shaking. “B-Busty... Busty girls are... understanding each other! What’s with that sweat accumulation!? I’ve never experienced that! You too, right, Yume-chan!?” “...Sorry, Akatsuki-san. I might understand a bit...” “Mugyaa! There are only big boobs in this room! ...Is this heaven?” Akatsuki-san doesn’t seem to have a complex about the size of her chest; she just likes big breasts... Anyway, Asuhain-san was talking normally to the others. I wonder if I’m the only one being avoided, or does Higashira-san have some sympathy from her? I took my change of clothes from my luggage and placed them on the bed. Taking off my uniform shirt, as Higashira-san suggested, changing into thin summer clothes revealed my underwear quite easily. But regarding that aspect, I was careful. I had selected all my underwear based on the criteria of being less see-through. Four days’ worth of underwear, all sorted out with that in mind. To avoid teasing from other girls, I chose simple designs for my underwear... Well, there were some that weren’t simple, but, in that regard... you know, yeah. “Whoa! Hey, come here!” When I changed into a sand beige blouse and a white long skirt, Akatsuki-san, still in her underwear, beckoned me by the window. Passing by Higashira-san, who was changing, I approached Akatsuki-san. “Akatsuki-san... you shouldn’t stand by the window dressed like that.” “In a place this high, no one can see us! Look at this instead, down below!” Standing next to Akatsuki-san, I peered down below the window. From here, about four floors down, a sparkling blue pool was visible. Next to it, there seemed to be a barbecue terrace.
“It’s a pool! Isn’t this like a resort!?” “But we can’t use it. Didn’t they explain that?” “Eh? How stingy. We brought swimsuits, you know.” “Only those who chose the marine experience course did.” Only students in the marine experience course, including us, needed swimsuits, and other students shouldn’t have brought them. “What a waste. Think about how beautiful it would be at night. A pool with a view of the night scenery, you know?” “Well, if it were a date location, I would have wanted to go...” Since this was a school trip, the opportunity to approach such a stylish pool was— “—Oh, right.” “Yume-chan?” “Sorry, it’s nothing.” Since this was a school trip, there would be no chance to approach such a stylish pool. In other words— Is it possible to meet Mizuto there without being seen by anyone? Mizuto Irido ◆ What I Didn’t Know Until Now My roommates turned out to be Kawanami and two other classmates I hadn’t talked much with. Kawanami had apparently recruited these two from other groups. When I asked about why he chose them, he answered, “Well, they’re both taken. It’s more convenient to have them in the same room as they can be flexible about various things, right?” It felt intuitively uncomfortable, but considering the clear convenience for me, I wasn’t in a position to object.
Dinner was scheduled for 7 p.m, a banquet-style meal in the dining hall. Tables were set up for each group with various dishes like grilled meat, steamed fish, and cooked rice. We would take and share the food from these tables. The biggest eater was, unsurprisingly, Kawanami, and surprisingly, Minami-san was also eating almost as much. It was a mystery where all that energy disappeared in her small body. When Yume lightly teased her about it, she retorted, “I’d like to know where all that energy of yours is going!” After dinner, there was nothing to do except take a bath until lights out at 10 p.m. Since it was a trip and not a regular dormitory with a communal bath, there was no need to worry too much about waiting to shower. However, it felt like a waste to retire to my room early, so while searching for a place to meet Yume secretly, I decided to wander around the hotel. Just then, I heard a girl’s voice in the elevator hall on the basement floor. Listening from a distance, I noticed a familiar figure, Asuhain, surrounded by three other girls. On closer inspection, one of those girls was Yoshino. Dressed in what looked like a short camisole and almost underwear-like pants, her fashion boldly exposed her stomach and thighs. The other two were often seen with her—friends or entourage, depending on how you looked at it. The conversation seemed one-sided towards Yoshino’s group, and the sharpness in their voices reached my ears. “Read the room~ Everyone is watching, you know?” “Yeah, yeah. Stop cutting in, for real. Did you maybe think you'd be a better match? That’s rude, thinking like that.” It didn’t seem like a calm discussion. Yoshino’s group displayed an attitude as if a superior was lecturing a subordinate, and Asuhain just listened silently. It was an irritating scene, but I didn’t have the sense of justice to intervene. Besides, I couldn’t grasp what they were talking about.
Fortunately, before I could step in, Yoshino calmed the other two. “Easy there, both of you~. Ran-chan just let her feelings run a bit wild, that’s all~” “Eh~? But how can you forgive her? Thinking about Higashira-san and all~” Higashira? Could they be talking about us? “Well, it’s not good to just cut in suddenly, so you can be careful from now on, right? Ran-chan?” Yoshino put her hand on Asuhain’s shoulder, smiling, and whispered something in her ear. “—” “…!” Maybe the two girls behind Yoshino couldn’t see what happened, but from my side view, I clearly saw Yoshino whispering something to Asuhain. And at the same time, Asuhain raised her eyebrows slightly, expressing surprise on her face. Yoshino stepped away, smiling, and turned to her two friends. “Let’s go up. Wanna go to the convenience store?” She pressed the button on the elevator and, shortly after, the doors opened. The three of them entered, disappearing from view. Asuhain, left behind, also boarded another elevator, vanishing. From the conversation, it seemed that Yoshino and the other two girls had noticed Asuhain cutting in between Isana and I, who were assumed to be dating, and were actively countering that. It was a collective exercise of the right to self-defense among girls. Despite the somewhat insidious image of surrounding someone three against one, it was similar to what Kawanami and Minami had been doing, quietly thwarting those who tried to bother me and Yume.
Why did Asuhain confess to me to the extent of taking such risks? And what did Yoshino whisper in her ear...? What was said that surprised Asuhain? Until last year, I didn’t have the luxury of thinking about anything other than Yume and Isana. Although I have settled for now and gained the ability to look at other things, it seems that our school’s environment is more complicated than I thought. “—Ah, there you are.” Turning to the voice, Yume approached me from the banquet hall at a brisk pace. Her current attire, different from the uniform, looked deliberately modest, with a sand-colored blouse and a skirt that reached her ankles, making her appear refined compared to Yoshino. “Really. Do you have to disappear somewhere whenever you get a chance?” she complained. “I was just bored. I thought I’d use my time effectively.” I had been warned by teachers not to stay in the banquet hall too much. “Seriously. I have to make sure to catch and keep you as promised.” “Promised—” At that moment, Yume leaned in close to me and whispered in a somewhat cheerful voice. “(9 p.m, third-floor pool.)” Upon hearing it, it immediately clicked. Although the pool was off-limits for us on the school trip, it wasn’t explicitly forbidden to enter. An hour before lights out, most students would be in their rooms preparing for sleep, so there would be little chance of being seen by others. “(...Got it. 9 p.m)” Yume smiled, nodded, and then moved away, waving her hand as she returned to the banquet hall.
She had become quite clever, that earnest Ayai. I headed for my room, honestly happy that I had more to look forward to. Yume Irido ◆ Surprisingly Obvious Ulterior Motives When the four of us returned to our room for the time being, I started the conversation with a question. “What about the bath? In what order?” Higashira-san, sitting on the bed, tilted her head. “Are you going in already? There’s still quite some time until lights out, right?” “Well...” Akatsuki-san took out her own schedule sheet from her bag and checked. “Lights out at 10 p.m, so there’s still over two hours, right?” “Yeah, but if we think about all four of us going in one by one, it’ll take some time, won’t it?” It’ll be exactly two hours before all four of us finished showering if each person took thirty minutes. We would finish just in time for lights out. Akatsuki-san clicked her tongue in a somewhat ostentatious manner. “I was thinking of all of us going in together if we didn’t have much time left...” “Indeed, the bath here is quite spacious, but that possibility is not allowed when someone here has clear ulterior motives.” Perhaps because it’s a room designed for four people, the toilet and the bathroom were properly separated. And not only the bathtub but the shower area was also well-defined.
Then, Higashira-san raised her hand with a swift motion. “Yes, Sensei! Are you saying it’s okay if we have no ulterior motive!?” “You asking that question just shows you clearly have an ulterior motive.” “Yeah...” ...And in Higashira-san’s case, I’m not certain if even I might have some ulterior motives. No matter how many times I think about it, those breasts are amazing... “I’m fine with going later.” It was Asuhain-san who said that. “I don’t take long showers, and drying my hair is quick.” Certainly, Asuhain-san has the shortest hair among us. The most troublesome thing with showering last just before lights out is not having time to dry the hair, so it makes sense to leave Asuhain-san for last. “Well then, is it okay if I go first?” Following that flow, I made a proposal. “You see, it takes time to wash and dry my hair. So if I shower after 9 p.m, we might not make it before lights out...” Yes, this is the reason why I started this conversation as soon as I got back. In order to reach the pool at the promised time of 9 p.m with Mizuto, I need to take a bath right away. However, it’s embarrassing to explain that reason openly, so I tried a situation where I could naturally bring up the topic. As planned, no one would doubt me... And as I was smirking in my mind, Akatsuki-san and Higashira-san looked at me with nonchalant eyes. “That’s okay, but~...”
“Is something going on? Something giving you the reason to hurry up and shower first~?” Why are they so sharp!? Akatsuki-san sighed as if to say, “Oh well,” and said, “Well, that’s fine. No matter what plans we have after 9 p.m. So, while Yume-chan is in the bath, I might go see some friends from other classes. What about you two? “I think I’ll wander around a bit. It’s a beautiful hotel... there seems to be a location that could be useful for my illustrations.” “As for me,” said Asuhain-san, “I’ll probably stay in the room. I brought my study materials.” “Uhe~, studying even on a school trip~” To Asuhain-san, who silently took out reference books, I smiled and said, “As expected of the top student in our grade.” “...Thanks,” Asuhain-san replied, still not giving a proper response to my words. Mizuto Irido ◆ The Face You Show When It’s Just The Two Of Us Exiting the changing room and entering the pool area, there stretched a panoramic night view exclusively for me. Not a soul could be found aside from myself. According to the notice posted at the entrance, swimming was prohibited until 9 p.m, and it seemed the nearby barbecue terrace had already concluded its last order. Therefore, at 9 p.m, it appeared that no one else but me was at this poolside. On the way to the pool, I saw traces of someone who had recently passed by, as evidenced by two streaks of water on the wooden deck. Avoiding them, I advanced and took shelter under an umbrella near the pool. Under the umbrella were white deckchairs. Sitting on one, I gazed at the pool that seemed to blend into the night view.
The pool was designed to connect to the outer edge of the building. The boundary between the pool and the sky was seemingly invisible at first glance, creating an illusion of integration of the pool’s water surface and the visible landscape. It reminded me of Marina Bay Sands in Singapore. I saw it somewhere, but I felt that even that incredible hotel with a huge ship-like deck on top had a pool like this. The pool was illuminated, shining as if bringing out the night view reflected on the water surface. It was indeed a pleasant atmosphere. And as long as I stayed under the umbrella, I wouldn’t be spotted from the upper floors of the towering hotel behind me. It’s forbidden to play in the pool, but not forbidden to watch nearby, huh... “I’ve become more cunning...” “Who’s that?” A voice sounded, and Yume peeked over my shoulder from behind. I was slightly surprised, leaning my body back. “What... you’re already here?” “I’m the type who sticks to the schedule. You, on the other hand, are unexpectedly early. Maybe you were looking forward to it?” To Yume, who smiled mischievously, I confidently replied, “Of course. I couldn’t wait.” Upon hearing this, Yume pursed her lips, looking unimpressed. “It sounds kinda fake when you say it...” “Unbelievable. Speaking like that to your boyfriend who is sincerely trying to convey his affection.” “Don’t change your character like that now.” When she asked me to scoot over a bit, I shifted slightly on the deckchair, and Yume promptly settled down right next to me.
The both of us sat down next to each other on the footside of the deckchair—basically the short side of a rectangle if you think of it that way—so the space was tight, and our shoulders ended up pressed closely together. Feeling a bit cramped, I shifted my shoulder behind Yume and placed my hands behind her, almost embracing her waist. This was probably an appropriate distance for a man and a woman having a secret meeting at night. Yume, as if leaning against me, gazed at the pool blending into the night view. “It’s beautiful...” In the sky, there was a clear starry night, on the ground below us, a sparkling night view of the city—and the pool reflected both on its water surface. Her large eyes were absorbed into the jewel-like scene. I silently observed her for a while, but eventually, those eyes turned to me suspiciously. “...Are you thinking of saying something silly?” She had a doubtful look. So I decided to meet her expectations. “You’re more beautiful.” “See! I knew you’d say that!” “But it’s true.” As I said this, I chuckled, suppressing my laughter. It was a fact that came to mind, but even I thought it sounded too unbelievable. When our laughter subsided, I looked again at the shining world and said, as if talking to myself. “Honestly, I never thought a day would come when I could enjoy a school trip so well.”
“So you’re enjoying it? I only get the impression that you’ll just disappear somewhere alone to read a book...” With a half-squint gaze, Yume said, so this time, I decided to respond seriously. “It’s because you’re here. Even if we don’t get many chances to talk, just knowing you’re right there makes me feel happy.” Yume blushed instantly and looked at me with a puzzled expression. “W-What’s that so suddenly...? Since when did you become so cheesy?” “I reflected on it. Based on my junior high school experience. No matter how genuine one’s affection for another is, it won’t last if you don’t make an effort to convey it... So now I’ve always felt that my words were lacking.” Really... That was the story that defined the entire past year. A relationship that could communicate without words was certainly comfortable in its own way. But such a thing couldn’t last forever. If I want to continue my relationship with her, I must not neglect expressing my feelings through words. When we decided to get back together and had a deep conversation... that’s when I realized this. So, I stopped trying to act cool and be overly sophisticated with my words. Yes, if there was a time when I was cheesy, it was more like last year “...It’s funny, isn’t it? Around this time last year, I thought I’d never engage in romance again. I believed anyone who did was foolish.” “Right?” Yume smiled nostalgically. “Even though I used to look down on people who were obsessed with romance... I’ve become one of them again.”
