Should+ V1

a. Function : To give advice, suggestion, and recommendation. We say the right or
correct thing to do. We use this form to state obligation for the present and the future.
Example : You look pale. You should get some rest.

b. Function : To express obligation, but is not as strong as “must”
Example : You should pay attention to the teacher’s explanation

c. Function : To express situation likely in the present
Example : Andi should be at home. Meet him now !

d. Function : To predict situation in the future
Example : You have checked in the doctor. You should be fine tomorrow

e. Function : To advice someone not to do something because it is bad or wrong.
Example : You shouldn’t cheat in the exam.

Modal Should

Should+ V1

Affirmative : Subject + should + V1
Negative : Subject + should not (shouldn’t) + V1
Interrogative : Should + S + V1 ?

Should + be + Ving

Function : To express the idea that subject is not fulfilling their
obligation or is not acting sensibly.

Example : You should be studying Math now. We will have a
quiz tomorrow. (The person is not studying right now).

Modal Should

Should+ be+Ving

Affirmative : Subject+ should be + V ing
Negative : Subject + should not be (shouldn’t be) + V-ing
Interrogative : Should + S + be + V-ing ?

Should + have + V3

Function : To express an action or idea that you didn’t fulfill the
obligation in the past.

Example :
I had a test this morning. I didn’t do well on the test because I
didn’t study for it last night.
I should have studied last night.

Modal Should

Should+ have+V3

Affirmative : Subject + should have + V3
Negative : Subject + should not have ( shouldn’t have) + V-3
Interrogative : Should + have + V-3 ?
