Middle School Parent Bulletin

From the MS Administration

Dear Parents,
As always, we trust that you have had a good week and that you and your loved ones are safe and
healthy. In this week’s Parent Bulletin we thought it might be timely to provide a space for reflection.
We hope that the graphics and prompts shared below will prove helpful as you and your family reflect
on your personal learning journeys in regards to the global pandemic, Distance learning and our new
normal.
In her presentation to the ISM faculty, Dr. Joanna Herrera shared that we all live in a VUCA world - a
place that is filled with Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity and Ambiguity.
Reflection Prompt #1:

Take a moment to think of concrete examples from your lived experience that illustrate each of the
4 quadrants of the VUCA graphic. Your examples can be personal, professional or a mix of the two.
Write your examples on a piece of paper or a post-it note.
As you look at your VUCA examples - take a moment to acknowledge how much you have been
navigating and how much you have been going through. The fact that you are still standing is
something to celebrate!
Is there one particular quadrant that makes you feel more uneasy than others? What makes you
say that?
Share your responses with someone else in your family.

Reflection Prompt #2:
Take a look at the change curve graphic below.
Think about your experience of shifting to Distance Learning with your child/children.
Take a “reflection walk” through each of the 6 phases - and try to recall how you felt, how
you reacted and what helped you shift into the next phase.
Whereabouts on the graph would you place yourself right now?
Think of a different change you are currently navigating. What phase are you in on the
change curve? What might you need to help you move into the next phase?

Kind Regards, Source = masteringbusinessanalaysis.com

MS BEARCAT TV:

Here is this week’s edition of Bearcat TV- our student news/announcements show.
Bearcat TV airs each Monday during Advisory.

MS TUTORIAL ROTATION:

As of today, we have been conducting our Distance Learning program for 14
weeks. We have 4 weeks before the December/January vacation and 7 weeks to
the end of the semester (January 29th).
We know that teaching and learning looks, sounds and feels very different in a
Distance Learning model and we understand that some students struggle to
sustain their levels of attention, motivation and engagement.
Through our Advisory, Counseling and Wellness programs, as well as student
survey data, we have gained valuable windows into the status of our students’
well-being and overall stress levels. With assessments scheduled in the critical
weeks ahead, we are aware that some students are feeling overwhelmed and
anxious.
In an effort to be responsive, supportive and proactive, we have decided to
implement a MS Tutorial Rotation on Thursday, November 26th and Friday,
November 27th.
The Tutorial Rotation will commence on Thursday at 10:30 a.m. and it will end on
Friday at 2:30 p.m. This timeframe represents one complete cycle of our block
schedule.
During the Tutorial Rotation all teachers will be on Zoom. However, they will not
formally plan lessons and no new information will be introduced. When students
have a scheduled class, they can make one of the following choices:

Log on to Zoom and meet with the teacher to review knowledge,
understandings and skills they are struggling with. Students can ask teachers
clarifying questions, check for understanding and consolidate their thinking.
Work independently without logging on to Zoom. Here students would take
stock of where they are in their learning journey for the given subject and
privately review/practice areas in need of growth. If students have any
outstanding work for this class, they can take the time to complete it.
A bit of both! Combine the two options outlined above depending on their
comfort with the given subject area and their levels of competency and
confidence.
I’m Done! Students who have completed all their work for a given class and
feel they do not need to review any concepts or skills are encouraged to move
away from their screens and do something they enjoy - read, exercise, etc.
We hope that by offering this special Tutorial Rotation, it will serve as an emotional
and academic life line that will proactively help students recalibrate.
Over this rotation, teachers, counselors and administrators will be reaching out to
specific students who need targeted support so they can take full advantage of
this opportunity.

Athletics Office

Our ISM Athletics website is the ‘one stop site’ for all athletics information. Bookmark
this site to keep up to date with all our Athletics happenings at ISM.
Congratulations to Gr 10 student Princess M who represented ISM and participated in
the HS Rifa girls soccer juggling competition last Saturday morning. Princess placed
2nd in round 1 with 65 juggles in 30 secs and made it to the knock out Qtr finals. Her
best score in the Qtr finals was 57. Well done Princess. The Rifa League will be having
another girls pairs juggling competition in December so we will again be looking for
girls interested in soccer who can juggle a soccer ball to enter this competition.
Information about this upcoming event will be sent to all HS girls via email and via the
HS girls soccer G currents team pages as was done for the previous competition.

As you all know the COVID19 situation remains with us and Manila remains under
GCQ until Nov 30th. We remain in the same situation as we ended school in June with
our sports program suspended indefinitely. We will monitor and adapt to the 'new
normal' guidelines and safety protocols that will be introduced when sports
participation slowly resumes in the Philippines. Every effort will be made to ensure a
modified and safe program is on offer for our athletes when we are allowed and when
we return to school in a face to face setting.

Online after school sports or activities will not be offered at this time to ensure
additional screen time is not added to an already long academic zoom day for
students. At the end of students zoom days it is important to get outside if you can for
some fresh air and to find time away from your screen. Try and do this for 30-45min at
least 3 times per week as it will help you cope with the mental challenges and
extensive time with on screen learning.

If some on screen fitness workouts are what you need or are interested check out our
COVID19 Home Workouts page for links to active workouts. Coach Cassie has added
additional workout videos to her page so keep an eye out for her fitness videos.....more
are coming soon now that Coach Cassie is back in country and out of home
quarantine.

Parents and students please take some time to peruse the Athletics website. It has a
wide variety of information. If you are a new family this coming SY and you have any
questions regarding the competitive program of sports at ISM after reading the
website information please send an email to [email protected].

Stay active, stay safe and stay well Bearcats! We hope to see you all back on campus
sometime soon..

Best Regards,
Mark Pekin
Director of Athletics
