the demand from the industry, community and other stakehold-

are not only academically competent, but it is necessary to
produce graduates whom are well rounded and holistic as well.
The outcome of the Service Learning program in FCSIT is very
encouraging from all the stakeholders involved. The Service
Learning activities contribute to the community development
including quality of life, socio-economic and personal empower-
ment towards meeting the community need. It is hoped that the
Service Learning methodology and its implementation in FCSIT
can be used by all the faculties within UNIMAS as the basis for
Service Learning implementation within the respective faculties.

PROJECT SYNOPSIS
Service Learning is a program where Faculty of Computer Science and IT (FCSIT) (UNIMAS) students
and local communities work together and engage in knowledge sharing in a win-win situation. In addition, com-
munities can solve local problems with the help of students and students to improve their social skills and analyti-
cal abilities. This Service Learning requirement is one of the elements of the High Impact Educational Practices
(HIEPS) (Malaysia Education Blueprint 2015-2025). Service Learning has been implemented in TMF4034 Tech-
nopreneurship and Product Development since September 2016, Semester 1, 2016/2017. To date (February
2019), the number of Service Learning projects involved is 86 projects comprising 55 village projects and 31
school projects and participated by a total of 706 students throughout the five semesters. The affected district/-
sub-districts areas are in Kuching, Kota Samarahan, Lundu, Sematan, Simunjan and Sibu. This Service Learning
implementation is based on the FCSIT Service Learning Methodology. In order to make this Service Learning
successful, a Service Learning Committee was established at the FCSIT comprising of Advisors, Coordinators,
Faculty Service Learning Supervisors with specified roles and responsibilities. There are 5 types of projects that
have been implemented; [1] build a database (eg Village Profile), [2] conduct IT training, [3] build promotional /
corporate videos, [4] organize IT awareness talks and [5] web development (Village Web Site or Web Portal and
Products). There were six focus groups affected; [1] Children, [2] Youth, [3] Women, [4] Disabilities, [5] Entrepre-
neurs and [6] JKKK/Members of community.
PROJECT RATIONAL
In FCSIT, there was lack of experiential learning involving real world situations embedded in the faculty
program. One of the Program Educational Objectives (PEO) of Bachelor of Computer Science Programme in
FCSIT UNIMAS is “to nurture graduates who can think critically and possess ability to solve problems for the
requirements of industry”. Service Learning which is part of experiential learning has been used by FCSIT
UNIMAS as an educational approach to balance between formal instruction and the ability to serve in the
real-world problems. According to Malaysian Education Ministry in 2015, there is a mismatch in the supply and
demand of graduates, with employers reporting that graduates lack the requisite knowledge, skills and attitudes.
SL PHILOSOPHY
Community engagement is very essential in Service Learning by providing community service according
to the community needs. In achieving this, we are driven by three main components that are 1) Student, 2) Com-
munity and 3) Institution/Faculty as shown in Figure 1.0. In addition, we are also building synergy working
groups by co-operating and collaborating with institutions, government agencies, non-profits organisations, asso-
ciations and industries. It is imperative for these components to work hand in hand to assist in community devel-
opment. Service Learning benefits equally the service provider and the recipient of the services. Therefore,
reflecting from the experience is important to ensure satisfaction and continuous improvement.

The Service Learning Methodology (FCSIT) has been developed based on the implementation of Service
Learning program, within an academic course, taking into consideration of various stakeholders and the needs of
the community. Understanding local government structure in Sarawak is crucial as the methodology was shaped
based on the Malaysian Federation system and its structure (Federal, State and Local Government). The Sarawak
State Government plays role in appointing local government representatives including resident, district officer
and headman, which responsible for divisions, districts, sub-districts and villages. The inadequacy of current
Service Learning methodology in addressing the issues in Sarawak and Malaysia context has led to propose a
novel methodology. The proposed Service-Learning (SL) methodology addresses university requirements and
community engagement issues at various groups in Sarawak. As Sarawak is part of Federation of Malaysia since
1963, thus, the community engagement in the methodology was also designed based on the current government
structure as explained above.
The methodology consists of three phases: Phase 1: Service-Learning Planning, Analysis and Design; Phase 2:
Service-Learning Delivery; and, Phase 3: Service-Learning Evaluation and Reflection.

STUDENTS INVOLVEMENT
While many courses taught in classroom focused on the aspect of the Cognitive part, Service Learning
(SL) approach is proven to be the best method for student to gain all of the skills, which are their Cognitive,
Psychomotor and Affective skills. This is because the SL project is a challenging project where they need to have
technical skills on the IT solution for communities and student reflection (Cognitive), and at the same time they
need to have good communication skills with the community (Affective), leadership as they work in a team
(Affective), and psychomotor as when designing the flow chart and business plan and when they do the coding
and IT training to the communities.
The students not only learn, but they teach communities and they have to push themselves to the limit. There are
a lots of comments from students saying that the really enjoy this approach because it gives them the firsthand
experience working the real project with communities.
Based on the course outcome (CO), this course TMF4034 Technopreneurship and Product Development, has 3
