Product Soft Innovation
Implantable Renal Replacement Device

• Target:
Patients with end stage renal disease (ESRD) where the kidney has completely failed.

• Narrative:
This device will function as a kidney where it filters the blood. Furthermore, it will be implanted

in place of one of the existing kidneys. The device will use porous membranes and ion pumps to separate
the blood from the filtrate. The blood and essential nutrients will be returned to the vascular system, and all
waste will be sent to the bladder via the ureter. This device is made from materials that are relatively cheaper
than what is already on the market and it achieves maximal efficiency in filtering the blood. Hence, this
device will help patients who need to replace their kidneys or patients who cannot afford the time or money
to be on a transplant waitlist.

Prior Works Collection
• Needs:

One of the grand challenges set forth by the National Academy of Engineering (NAE) is
engineering new medicines. In 2016, there were 120,688 reported cases of end-stage kidney disease,
classifying this medical condition as “common”. Therefore, it may prove to be non-feasible for those
patients to have to use a dialysis machine several times a week or receive a new kidney. This device will
thus allow patients to have a functioning kidney that is relatively more economically-friendly and achieve
better clinical outcomes.
• Resources:

o Nanofibrous electrospun scaffold
o Synthetic vessel lined with a shape memory alloy (SMA) stent.
o Microphysiological system on a chip for the filtrate
o Silicone nanopore membrane
o Funding from the National Institute of Health (NIH)

Process Soft Innovation
Derivation of the Bernoulli Equation using Conservation of Energy

• Target:
Mathematicians, physicists, and students learning the Bernoulli Equation for the first time.

• Narrative:
The Bernoulli Equation describes the motion of ideal fluids, and it is used for the analysis of fluids

such as the blood and the lymph. Typically, its derivation requires the knowledge of calculus and differential
equations, which could be somewhat tedious and to some students, daunting. Hence, this mathematical
process allows for the visualization of the Bernoulli Equation as another form for the conservation of energy
and it proves it simple algebra a few steps.

ΔE=0

E1 = E2

EO1 + KE1 + PE1 = EO2 + KE2 + PE2 (By dividing by V)
EO1 + 0.5mv12 + mgh1 = EO2 + 0.5mv22 + mgh2

P1 + 0.5ρv12 + ρgh1 = P2 + 0.5ρv22 + ρgh2

• Needs:

The Bernoulli Equation is a very important equation in fluid mechanics and being able to visualize
how it is conceptually another form of the conservation of energy is important. The concept is known, yet
it was never shown mathematically how it is derived simplistically. In addition, this will provide students
an easier approach to derive the equation using simple algebra rather than calculus and differential
equations.

Service Soft Innovation
SherMed

• Target:
Any individual who wishes to know the differential diagnosis of a certain disease. Hence,

this is helpful for patients, health providers, and medical students.
• Narrative:

SherMed is an AI computer program that allows its users to input their signs and symptoms and it
will output all the possible diagnoses along with their percentages of their likelihood. It operates via a
user interface using MATLAB as its programming language and it prompts the user to input what signs
and symptoms they have and also measure their vital signs. Then, the program will compare the signs and
symptoms and cross-reference them with each disease in the data and display the likely matches based on
the searches. From the patient’s labs and history, it will rule out the least possible diagnoses and output
the most likely diagnosis.

• Needs:

One of the grand challenges set forth by the National Academy of Engineering is reverse-
engineering the brain, i.e. artificial intelligence (AI). A useful application is for AI is to assist clinicians and
medical students in diagnosing patients more accurately and efficiently therefore minimizing diagnostic
errors. This will also allow patients to know what possible diagnoses they may have if they experience
certain symptoms.
• Resources:

o MATLAB code
o Friendly user interface
o A phone-app interface
o A chip that measures blood flow to determine vital signs
o Funding from the National Institute of Health (NIH)

Unique Experience Soft Innovation
The Man of Steel Flight Experience

• Target:
Individuals interested in experiencing flight as Superman

• Narrative:
This is a virtual reality experience that allows individuals to experience flight. Users will be

prompted to put a superman suit on and tied to pad with ropes that allows them to float in the air. The
users will then have virtual reality glasses that displays scenes and location from the Man of Steel movie.
Surrounding the user will be airflow systems that allow them to experience the “wind” of flight. Real-
time sounds systems will surround the user to allow them to be fully isolated from the real world and
engaged in the virtual world. This experience also allows users to leave Earth and experience flight in
space in real-time.

Prior Works Collection
• Needs:

Human flight has always been a direction for mankind’s history for as long as history books can
record them. This experience allows fans of superman and the movie Man of Steel to engage in this
experience and gives them the opportunity to appreciate and enjoy flight in a unique way.
• Resources:

o Aviation pad
o Maps built into the system
o Acoustic sound system
o Propellers
o Air flow systems
o Funding from Universal Studios and Warner Brothers

The Laws of Newton Poem

In the Branch of Mechanics,
How many ideas may come in link,

From the V's of Vectors,
To the angles of Thetas,
"Great Difficulty" many may think,
In the laws of Newton,
In its Oceans... A lot is to sink...
As the law of inertia comes to dawn,
A rest mink is rest mink,
And a constant v is constant v,
If net force has no tink',
To the second car of serried ink,
Vector sum on an object influencing,
Shall alone follow its accelerating,
And finally, look around you...
As you will find nothing,
But the Nature winking back at you,

As to give is to take,
And to take is to give,
Will be Newton's third of his successive,
Deducting the woven trilogy of Newton,
Can thee repeat, without any flaw?

• Target:
Students taking physics

• Narrative:
This poem gives students struggling to understand the three laws of Newton a fun and easy way to

learn them and understand how they work.

11

Prior Works Collection
• Needs:

This poem makes learning physics easy and entertaining and allows learners to appreciate physics
more and help them see that physics can be fun and interesting.
• Resources:

o The Laws of Newton
o Anapest rhythm meter
• Precedents:
o While this piece was written and innovated by myself, there are science poems that discussed the

Laws of Newton such as: https://www.sciencerhymes.com.au/published-poem
