Storefronts, cafes, and classic
cottages are recurring themes
in Schulenburg’s work, and
one sees the influence of
Edward Hopper. However, in
them, Schulenburg’s solitary
figures appear reflective and contemplative
rather than lonely. In this crowded world, they
seek respite in places and time to be alone; to
commune with nature, write, or perhaps paint.

“From the start, Paul Schulenburg instinctively
understood and skillfully practiced his
commanding form of art, which led us to start
collecting his work quite early in his career. Our
serious fascination with his work continues.”

“As a novelist and poet, I am intrigued
by art that tells a story and makes me
feel as if I am one of its characters.
Like a good book, a Paul Schulenburg
painting draws me into the scene and
lets me spy, eavesdrop, and imagine
what life is like in that quietly evocative
world. I’m always happy to spend time
in the art he creates.”

Aqua Cottage by the Shore is set in
Chase’s Ocean Grove, a community of
seasonal cottages on Nantucket Sound
founded in the 1930s. For many, vacation
experiences form the most significant
memories—times when away from work
or school, one is free to be one’s true self.
A developer, planning on demolishing
the cottages and building a resort hotel
attempted to buy the property. Like the
families who had been coming to Chase’s
for generations who fought the plan
and won, Schulenburg’s work preserves
cherished history.

“Whatever he is painting—landscapes,
figures, street scenes, still lifes, or Cape Cod
fishermen—Paul Schulenburg captures a quiet,
meditative moment. Time seems to stand still.
Light and shadow, shape and color structure
his compositions, but it is always the mood that
strikes a chord.”

Coastal Views
Schulenburg’s sky and shore
scapes pull the viewer into the
great outdoors.
“Cape Cod is bustling in the
summer. Away from busy
roads and town centers, one can find a wealth
of beauty and peace communing with nature.
“I love going bayside at low tide to walk out
on the flats, stepping over water settled in tidal
pools. Rather than swinging around on their
moorings, the boats rest on the sand, gently
listing to one side.
“On the ocean side, the mesmerizing waves
continually roll in, altering the shoreline as
we watch.”

“After having lived on three continents,
I returned to retire to Cape Cod. The
sunlit marshes, the reflection of ocean
and sky, its people. Here is a serenity and
peacefulness which Paul Schulenburg’s
unique talent catches and shares with us.”
