To the west of the Isthmus
is the Gulf of Corinth, to
the east the Saronic Gulf.
Since 1893 the Corinth
Canal has run through the

effectively making the
Peloponnese an island.
Today, two road bridges,
two railway bridges and
two submersible bridges at
both ends of the canal
connect the mainland side
of the isthmus with the
Peloponnese side.

MON TUE WED THU FRI SAT SUN Knossos is the largest Bronze Age
12 3 4 archaeological site on Crete and is
considered Europe's oldest city.
56 7 8 9 10 11 The site was discovered in 1878 by
Minos Kalokairinos . The
12 13 14 15 16 17 18 excavations in Knossos began in
AD 1900 by the English
19 20 21 22 23 24 25 archaeologist Sir Arthur Evans and
his team, and they continued for
35 years. The palace of Knossos
was undoubtedly the ceremonial
and political centre of the Minoan
civilization and culture. It appears
as a maze of workrooms, living
spaces, and storerooms close to a
central square. An approximate
graphic view of some aspects of
Cretan life in the Bronze Age is
provided by restorations of the
palace's indoor and outdoor
murals, as it is also by the
decorative motifs of the pottery
and the insignia on the seals and
sealings. The palace was
abandoned at some unknown
time at the end of the Late Bronze
Age, c. 1380–1100 BC. In Greek
mythology, King Minos dwelt in a
palace at Knossos. He had
Daedalus construct a labyrinth in
which to retain his son, the
Minotaur.

56 7 8 9 10 11 the Olympus Range on the border
between Thessaly and Macedonia,

biodiversity.[ The highest peak Mytikas,
26 27 28 29 30 31 meaning "nose", rises to 2,918 metres It
is one of the highest peaks in Europe in
terms of topographic prominence.
In Greek mythology Olympus was the
home of the Twelve Olympian gods of
the ancient Greek world.[It is the setting
of many Greek mythical stories. The
Twelve Olympian gods lived in the
gorges, where there were also their
palaces. Pantheon (today Mytikas) was
their meeting place and theater of their
stormy discussions. The Throne of Zeus
(today Stefani) hosted solely him, the
leader of the gods. From there he
unleashed his thunderbolts, expressing
his godly wrath. The Twelve Olympians
included also Hera, Hestia, Demeter,
Poseidon, Athena, Apollo, Artemis,
Hermes, Aphrodite, Ares and
Hephaestus. Ιn Iliad Olympus is referred
as great, long, brilliant and full of trees.
In Pieria, on Olympus' northern foot, the
mythological tradition had placed the
nine Muses, patrons of the Fine Arts,
daughters of Zeus and the Titanide,
Mnemosyne: Calliope (Epic Poetry), Clio
(History), Erato (Love Poetry), Euterpe
(Music), Melpomene (Tragedy),
Polyhymnia (Hymns), Terpsichore
(Dance), Thalia (Comedy) and Urania
(Astronomy).
