"Sometimes we need fiction to escape

PREPARING FOR MY EXAMS

After having a whale of a time during the summer vacations, my teacher dropped a bomb when she
announced the unit tests for all subjects in the forthcoming week. I had butterflies in my stomach
thinking that after all the fun and frolic, it was now time to pull up my socks for the pending exams.
When I saw the weekly schedule covering all the subjects through assessments on spellings, subject
matter, projects, and deadlines for previous assignments, I had jitters running through my spine.
It was a herculean task to prepare for an enormous syllabus so I had to burn the midnight oil. The
games had to take a backseat and I had to stop playing with my friends. When I was feeling nervous
while preparing for my assessments, my mother’s support and kind words helped me regain my
composure. Just the night before the first exam, I was tossing and turning in my bed thinking how
difficult the assessment could be and if I were prepared enough. When I woke up in the morning my
mind went blank, but my mother asked me to soothe my frayed nerves and take the assessment with a

positive spirit.
I freshened up and took the opportunity to revise the assessment yet again before putting my books
away. The assessment started at 8.45 a.m. sharp. When the question paper was revealed to us, my heart
started pounding. As I went through the questions one by one, I realized I knew all the answers. I
breathed a sigh of relief and solving the question paper was a cakewalk. After the assessment was over,
I realized that all my hard work had paid off. My joy knew no bounds when I scored full marks in my
assessment. That evening my mother asked me to go down and play as she suggested that “all work and

no play would make me a dull girl”.
The success of this first exam gave me the instilled confidence to prepare myself for my academic field

ahead. My composure to take the remaining exams was much better and I continue to remain in a
positive mind frame. No exam is difficult if we are perseverant and diligent in our studies every day.

"Raise your words, not your voice. The rain
grows the flowers not the thunder."

The Golden Voice

A long, long time ago God was sitting in heaven and thinking about what to do next after he had created
the earth and all the birds and animals.
Suddenly an idea struck him…," how about I call all the birds to me because they have no colour on their
body and they look very plain and I will colour them beautiful!”
Even the earth was dull and drab so if I colour the birds may be the earth will also look colourful, he
thought. So, he called all the birds to heaven so that they could be painted. God readied his palette and
got ready to paint all the birds. The day came and all the birds flew up to heaven for this and all were
very excited! When one looked up to the sky, one could see all the birds flying in a big flock together
towards heaven for this big event of God! First, the eagles went followed by the pigeons, the parakeets,
the parrots, the macaws, crows, Mayans, peacocks and all the birds one could think of !!
When they reached heaven, God started painting all the birds one after the other. He painted the parrots
bright green and their beats bright red, the Eagles earthy brown, the pigeons smart grey, the parakeet's
sky blue. the Peacocks a splash of multi-colour and it was all a very colourful sight! All but one bird did
not make it to the event, The Koel!! Now the Koel was a very lazy bird, and it was sleeping and forgot it
had to go to heaven to get her colour! It rubbed its eyes and said, “I'm very late, I fell asleep!!” and
started to fly swiftly & hurriedly towards the sky. All the birds started coming down and the Koel was
the only bird that was going upwards towards heaven and not downwards towards home.
All the birds flying back started teasing and making fun of the Koel that it was very late, and they looked
at her colour and said that she has no colour at all and kept on laughing. When the Koel reached heaven,
God was shocked and surprised that the Koel was so late for the event!
The Koel said sorry and said she fell asleep and forgot that she had to come to heaven today! God said, “I
have no colour left to give you and to paint on you, I have painted all the birds and have no colours left in
my palate to paint you. I'm very sorry!”
The Koel was very sad, and its shoulders drooped down, and it turned around and was walking away
from heaven, sad and dejected. Suddenly the Koel heard God’s voice, "Wait don't go." The Koel quickly
turned around & saw God looking carefully at his palette, which had a small dot of Golden colour. The
Koel looked at the small dot and said “What's will such a mall dot of colour do to my body, it will not
change, and I will still look like the way I am…. with no colour."
God asked the Koel to forget about the colour and asked her to open her mouth wide open & with the
gold dot colour on his paintbrush, splashed the back of her throat with one swift move!
After he had painted the Koels throat he told the Koel to just sing a note, the koel looked confused but
still sang! The Koel sang the most beautiful, melodious and heavenly notes which came out of its throat!
She was shocked & surprised! It was so melodious and beautiful that all the birds that were heading back
towards earth stopped midway to look back to heaven as to how come a bird can have such a heavenly
and beautiful voice. It was none other than the Koel Itself! After the Koel came back from heaven to
earth, it sat on the tree branches in the forest and began to sing in her heavenly voice. The entire forest
would fall silent when the koel would sing, just to listen to its heavenly voice although it never got its
share of colour from God, it had the most beautiful voice amongst all the birds and this is how the Koel
got its “Golden Voice”!
Moral of the Story: It does not matter how beautiful you are from the outside, but how beautiful you are
from the inside!
