Newcomer In English Final Year Revision ( 2024 ) By: T. A. T. With my best wishes 3 Practice makes perfection Read the passage and choose the correct answer from a, b, c or d: ) الطالب عليها يجيب) People like to make predictions, and what life will be like in the future is one area that a particularly large number of people make predictions about. As we make predictions about the future from our point of view today, it can be interesting to look back at what people in the past predicted and notice which predictions were accurate and which were not and the reasons why this is. Fifty years ago, there was a sense that people in the future would become more concerned about protecting the environment than they were at the time. However, all those years ago, when people thought of protecting the environment, they tended to see this in terms of picking up litter and recycling plastic bottles. This contrasts with attitudes to environmental protection today which focus on not traveling at all or as far by aeroplane or petrol-fuelled cars and trying to reduce the amount of clothes or plastic packaging you consume. On the subject of transport, some people living fifty years ago expected that we would be driving in the air instead of the roads now. There were indeed plans to create a flying car back then, but the idea never really took off and seemed impractical. The idea that flying cars would spell an end to traffic jams also seems somewhat unrealistic today. There were predictions that technology in general would become a more important part of our everyday lives, and these have proven to be correct. People living fifty years ago expected that items such as computers would become lighter and more compact in the future, for example, and this has happened. On the other hand, there was a belief that everyone would have a robot to do all of their housework in their home and this has proven to be incorrect. 70. According to the passage, a particularly large number of people like to make predictions about….. a. the future aspects of life. b. the difference between life now and in the future. c. the same issues people predicted in the past. d. what we won’t be able to do in the future. 71.According to the passage, in today’s attitudes, which aim at protecting the environment, focus on… a. using ships instead of planes. b. preventing the production of new cars. c. avoiding travelling by petrol-fueled means of transport. d. prohibiting cutting down more trees. 72.From the passage, we should reduce the amount of clothes or plastic packaging we consume to … a. avoid recycling b. decrease consumption c. save more money d. protect the environment 73.But the idea never really took off and seemed impractical. In this sentence, “take off” means.…. a. the opposite of “land” b. the opposite of ‘put on” c. make a great success d. cause heavy losses 74. According to the passage, driving in the air instead of on the roads ……... a. proved to be the only solution to protect the environment. b. was not a practical solution to protect the environment. c. was completely successful d. was not suggested by anyone 75. What is the main idea of the second paragraph passage? a) Fifty years ago, people’s concern about the environment was the same as today. b) The amount of clothes or plastic packaging we consume is the primary cause of pollution. c) Fifty years ago, people’s concern about keeping the environment was based on the focus on not travelling at all or as far by aeroplane or petrol-fueled cars. d) Fifty years ago, people’s concern about the environment was different from today's attitude, which focused on not travelling at all or as far by aeroplane or in petrol-fueled cars. 76. Predictions about the progress of technology ………. a. came true in most cases. b. were more than expected. c. haven’t been achieved yet. d. came true concerning having a robot at home.

Newcomer In English Final Year Revision ( 2024 ) By: T. A. T. With my best wishes 5 Practice makes perfection لكتابة موضوع إيجابي ممكن حفظ هذا الموضوع وتطويعه لموضوع االمتحان It's a worldwide fact that الموضوع is so important and can play a vital role in our life as individuals on one hand and change the shape of life all over the world as a whole on the other hand. I must thank the person who gave me the chance to write about this great subject because of its importance and seriousness. First of all, it has a lot of good effects and advantages which if well-exploited, will change our life completely to the best so we should do our best to develop it by all possible means. In my opinion, it's the golden key to a happy life full of peace, happiness and success. If it has any bad effects or disadvantages, they will be of no importance, if outweighed by its merits and benefits. Out of its great importance, I think that we can't do without it whatever the drawbacks it may cause. Above all, it helps in the progress and prosperity to any person or nation. Realizing the importance of it, the government hasn't forgotten its role and spares no effort to help spread it everywhere. As a student, I think …الموضوع ...may bring all the good to our society. In fact, it's impossible to lead a happy life without …الموضوع...as it is one of our chief sources of wealth. With the help of …الموضوع ...we can realize progress and development. I believe that if the government and the individuals put their hands together and share the responsibilities, we'll actually reap fruitful harvest now or in the near future. To sum up, الموضوع can help us live happily and peacefully and build up a new society void of defects. Finally, I must confess and say that the government and the individuals must give due care and attention toالموضوعand try hard to improve and developالموضوع as we are in need of it and without it life will be unbearable and meaningless. لكتابة موضوع سلبي ممكن حفظ هذا الموضوع وتطويعه لموضوع االمتحان No one can deny that الموضوع is so serious and dangerous. It can turn our life upside down and make it unbearable. First of all, it has a lot of bad effects and disadvantages, which we can’t count, on the individuals and the whole society, so we must do our best to put an end to it very soon. In my opinion, it has spread widely among us, so we should put our hands with the government to try to find immediate and urgent solutions before its disastrous effects and results aggravate. Important still, we must take into consideration that it’s one of the worst problems ever faced and may easily lead to other grave problems. Let's now ask ourselves how this bad phenomenon has come to take its place and imposed itself in front of us. I think it doesn't help any person or society to make any progress or advance. How about discussing the numerous and incalculable disadvantages and downsides? One of the most devastating and harmful demerits is the harms on the individuals and the society from one hand and the economy and standard of living of a country on the other hand. To sum up, الموضوع can’t help us live happily or peacefully in a society void of any defects. Finally, in my own point of view, the government and the people should work together, cooperate and put their hands together to put an end to this devastating and disastrous monster or phenomenon before its aggravation as they have the mutual responsibility and duty of doing this.

Newcomer In English Final Year Revision ( 2024 ) By: T. A. T. With my best wishes 7 Practice makes perfection The advantages and disadvantages of the internet No one can deny that the internet has become a great wonder of the modern world. Through the internet, we can communicate with all people all over the world in an easy way. We can know all what happens through the world in no time. The internet helps us in doing research in all branches of science. The internet made the world a small village. We can make the internet a good thing in our life by using it in a good way. We can shop online and do our work on the internet. On the other hand, it can be a bad thing if we use it in useless and evil things. It can waste our time and cause a lot of diseases and weakness. A lot of games on the internet teach the children violence and bad habits. Moreover, there must be parental control and follow-up to their children. To sum up, we can say that the internet has advantages and disadvantages. We should make use of it correctly to benefit from it and avoid its demerits and drawbacks to be safe and secure. We can't ignore nor deny its marvelous merits and impacts on all. The advantages and disadvantages of modern technology There's no doubt that our life today is quite different from life fifty years ago. Life in the past was very simple and easy. In the past people used animals to go from place to place. People died from many diseases which they couldn't cure. Today, thanks to modern science and technology, there're many inventions which have made man’s life easier and more comfortable. Modern means of transport help us to travel long distances in a very short time. The progress in medicine has enabled us to find a cure for most diseases. We also have pure water and electric supply. Modern technology has brought the comfort and relax to all people. However modern technology has several disadvantages. The most noticeable disadvantage is pollution. Pollution is very harmful to man's life and can cause many diseases. Man now depends too much on machines. There are a lot of people who can't find jobs because we use machines to do most of our work. Many people nowadays suffer from stress and worry. Some people may have a nervous breakdown due to technology. To sum up, modern technology is a double-edged weapon and we should be aware of its merits and demerits and avoid the demerits as soon as possible. Finally, I like using modern technology in my own life and I recommend all people to use and benefit from it.

Newcomer In English Final Year Revision ( 2024 ) By: T. A. T. With my best wishes 48 Practice makes perfection The most important questions with model answers 1-In your opinion, what are the morals of “Great Expectations”? 1-Wealth and social status don't guarantee happiness or virtue. 2-True friends are those who love you for who you are, not for what you have. 3-Kindness, generosity and sacrifice capture people's hearts. 4-Love is blind as Pip didn't see Estella's demerits and bad qualities as he loved her. 5-Revenge leads to destruction to all as that was clear with Miss Havisham. 2-Who do you think is the best character in “Great Expectations”? Why? I think Joe is the best character in the story as he is helpful, friendly, kind-hearted and forgiving. He helped Pip a lot and was kind with him. He didn't care for money and only cared for friendship with Pip. He forgave Pip and repaid his debts. 3-Who do you think is the worst character in “Great Expectations”? Why? I think Orlick is the worst character in the story as he is motivated by envy and resentment, and shows no regret for his actions. He attacked Mrs. Joe with a hammer, leaving her disabled and mute. He later kidnapped Pip and attempted to kill him. I think Compeyson is the worst character in Great Expectations. He hurt Miss Havisham by abandoning her on her wedding day, after conspiring with her halfbrother to deceive her out of her fortune. He hurt Magwitch by involving him in his crimes, betraying him to the authorities, and trying to take his money. 4-In your opinion, was Pip a young man of principles? Why do you think so? Yes, he was as when he realized that Magwitch was his benefactor, he decided not to take any more money from him as he was a criminal. Also, he was grateful to Magwitch helped him become a gentleman, Pip decided to help him escape. In addition, he was grateful to Joe and Biddy at the end. He helped his friend, Herbert. 5-Which character do you pity more: Miss Havisham or Pip? Why? I really feel pity for Pip as he was an orphan who was treated badly by his sister then humiliated and heart-broken by Estella who was Miss Havisham’s tool to take revenge on men including the innocent Pip and finally knew his benefactor was a convict. 6-If Miss Havisham had helped her brother financially, do you think that he wouldn’t have plotted with her fiancé against her? Why? I think Miss Havisham’s half-brother, Arthur was greedy by nature. So if she had helped him, he would have always plotted against her to get all her money. 7-What might have happened if Miss Havisham’s fiancé hadn’t left her? She might have had a normal life. She might have been happy and had children and generous with her wealth. She mightn't have adopted Estella nor influenced Pip’s life and dreams. She might have helped her family members. 8-Would you try to get a better education if you were Pip, just to make Estella change her attitude towards you? Why? If I were Pip, I would try to get a better education to improve my position in society not just for a woman. Education can give you the chance to be an important person. 9-The house looked unused and most of the doors were closed. Everything was dark inside. Do you think this atmosphere reflected the circumstances Miss Havisham had lived in? Why? The gloomy atmosphere of the house reflected the sad circumstances she lived in. She was heartbroken when her fiancé abandoned her on the wedding day. She turned into a bitter, resentful woman who stayed indoors, stopping the clocks and leaving everything as it was on the day she was to be married. That showed her condition and psychology.

Newcomer In English Final Year Revision ( 2024 ) By: T. A. T. With my best wishes 49 Practice makes perfection 10-What do you think Pip and Magwitch have in common? Was that a good reason to make Magwitch help Pip? I think they were both orphans who led a hard life. Both were also kind-hearted and helpful. Yes, that was a good reason to make Magwitch help Pip as Pip had helped him 11-Orlick was a cunning, tricky, sly, artful, shrewd man who did so much wicked deeds out of jealousy and malice. Illustrate. I totally hated Orlick as he was jealous of Pip and attacked Mrs Joe with a hammer, leaving her disabled and mute. He wanted to trick the villagers and told them that convicts had escaped to mislead them. He later kidnapped Pip and attempted to kill him. 12-Although Pip and Biddy were nearly sure that Orlick was the only suspect of trying to kill Mrs Joe, they couldn't say a word nor accuse him. Why do you think so? As they didn't have steady proof or evidence against him. Mrs Joe became disabled and mute and couldn't tell the truth. Orlick tricked the police and the people by leaving some leg-irons at the crime scene. 13-Prove that Estella was a victim, not an evil person. Although Estella broke Pip's heart and was so cruel and cold, all these things were out of her hand. As she was adopted from her childhood to be a tool of Miss Havisham to break men's hearts. She was trained to do so. 14-Do you think that the end of the each character was fair? I think that all characters had the fair ending. As for Miss Havisham, she died after being affected by her burns. Compeyson met his end drawn in the sea. Magwitch was dead at hospital. Estella became a widow after Drummle's death and inherited most of Miss Havisham's property and sold her country house and left for London. Pip understood life better and worked in Egypt with his friend, Herbert. Joe and Biddy got married. Orlick was arrested and imprisoned. 15-Mr Jaggers had a crucial role and influence on some of the characters. Explain. I think that Mr Jaggers was one of the most important characters in the story. He was an influential lawyer who was strong, important and criminals feared him. He was Miss Havisham's and Magwitch'slawyer who was the only one that knew Magwitch's secrets. He was the lawyer of Molly, Estella's mother who acquitted her and made Miss Havisham adopt Estella. 16-If you were Pip, would you take off your coat and try to save Miss Havisham and put out the flames although she used Estella to take revenge on you? Yes, of course I would do that. As humans, it is our duty to help others when they are in danger, no matter how badly they treated us before. Moreover, Miss Havisham regretted what she had done to Pip. 17-What do you think Miss Havisham could have done to overcome her bad experience with her fiancée? She could have looked for another man who deserved her love and forgotten that wicked person. One shouldn't have destroyed one's life for failing one time. 18-If you were Estella, would you warn Pip of Miss Havisham’s plan? Why? Of course, I would warn him to take care of her plan as he proved to be innocent and kind. 19-Do you think that Pip's education alone could change his life? Why? I don’t think so. Education alone can't change one’s life. You also need to change your behaviour and acquire different skills. You need to have qualities like self-confidence, creativity and patience. Education should be for education’s sake, not just to please someone and make them love you. 20-Why do you think Magwitch decided to help Pip? He was grateful to Pip for helping him. Also, he felt sorry for him as he knew Pip was an orphan.
