IKEOLUWAPO OYENEYE AJAYI, FAAS [MB, BS; M.Cl.Sc; MPH; PhD; MD; FMCGP, FWACP] IkeOluwapo Oyeneye Ajayi is a Professor of Epidemiology and Family Physician. She has worked as a Family physician for over 30 years at University College Hospital, Ibadan (UCH). Her academic career began as a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Epidemiology and Medical Statistics, College of Medicine, University of Ibadan (UI), having obtained a PhD in Epidemiology. She rose to Professor grade in 2013. Prof Ajayi has served in various capacities at the UI and UCH, including her current position as the Director of the Institute for Advanced Medical Research and Training, College of Medicine, University of Ibadan, Nigeria and Chair of UI/UCH Joint Ethics Review Committee. Prof Ajayi’s area of expertise is operational/Implementation research in communicable and non-communicable diseases and led multidisciplinary teams. She has consulted national and international agencies, including FMoH, Nigeria, WHO/TDR, CDC, USAID, UNICEF, PMI, EDCTP, SuNMap, TETFUND, and MV-PATH. Areas of assignments include Malaria and Malaria vaccines in collaboration with NMEP, evaluation of immunisation coverage, outbreak response and surveillance, maternal and child health services evaluation, and development of national malaria operations research agenda (NAMORA). She contributed to developing the Nigeria Field Epidemiology and Laboratory Training Programme (NFELTP). She also serves on expert committees, including the WHO/TDR Ad hoc Working Group on the Development of a Guidance Framework on testing and deploying the Sterile Insect Technique against Mosquito-borne diseases and the NMEP Malaria Operations Research Working Group. Prof Ajayi has over 200 publications. Prof Ajayi is a proud recipient of the prestigious Nigeria Prize for Science, 2017, awarded by the Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas (Nigeria LNG) Company. The prize, which was awarded on the theme <innovations in malaria control,= was awarded in a ceremony in Lagos. CHIEF ESAN, GEORGE JOSEPH FOLAYAN MB, B.S Ph.D, FRCP. FMC Path, FWACP, FRCPath; FAS, Prof Fola Esan was born in Ikoro, Ekiti, 86 years ago. He attends the famous Christ School, Ado Ekiti, for his secondary education and University College, Ibadan (Now University of Ibadan),1956-1962, to study Medicine. He was employed as a lecturer at the same University. He became a Consultant Haematologist at the University College Hospital, Ibadan, after completing his residency postgraduate training in Medicine and Haematology. He rose through the ranks to become a Professor in 1975, becoming the first Nigerian professor of Haematology. Prof Esan served as the Foundation Secretary of the Nigerian Society for Hematology and Blood Transfusion and was elected President of the same Society, serving two nonconsecutive terms. He played a significant role in starting the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria and shaping its Faculty of Pathology. He held several important positions in the Nigeria Medical Association and made significant research contributions to Clinical, biochemical, and molecular studies on abnormal haemoglobins, especially thalassemia and sickle cell anaemia. Prof Esan served as the Director of the National Institute for Medical Research, Lagos, from 1986 to 1988 and was a Board member and Director at the Institute of Genetic Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine, Ibadan. After retiring from the University of Ibadan, he worked in various capacities in the Middle East, including as a Professor and Consultant Haematologist at King Saud University, Riyadh; Consultant Haematologist at Security Forces Hospital, Riyadh, and Qatif General Hospital, Qatif, Saudi Arabia; and Locum Consultant Haematologist at Al Ain Hospital, UAE. Upon returning to Nigeria, he co-founded the Institute of Genetic Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine in Ibadan with his friend and co-researcher, Professor Tunde Ogunmola, in 2023. He was invited to restart the suspended College of Medicine, Ekiti State University, between 2009 and 2013, remaining there as a Consultant Haematologist to help stabilize the College. He later moved to Afe Babalola University as a professor and Consultant Haematologist in 2017 and was appointed the first CMD Afe Babalola MULTISYSTEM HOSPITAL from 2019 to 2021. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of London, the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria, the West African College of Physicians, the Royal College of Pathologists, the Nigerian Academy of Science, and the Nigerian Academy of Medicine. He is also a member of the International Society of Hematology. Prof. Esan was honoured with the University Gold Medal from University College Ibadan (now University of Ibadan) in 1962 and the Langley Memorial Prize from the London School of Tropical Medicine in 1974. He has held the traditional title of Ekarun Balogun Basegun of Ibadan Land since 1997. His hobbies include playing Lawn tennis, dancing (ballroom), and reading.

ADEYINKA GLADYS FALUSI PhD, FAS, FAMeds (Trustee/ Founder) SCHAF Professor Adeyinka Falusi is a distinguished Haematology scholar specializing in Genetics and Research Ethics. With over 40 years of experience in academics, research, and administration, she has made significant contributions to medical research and ethics. Professor Falusi was Chair of the First Functional Joint University of Ibadan/University College Hospital, Ibadan Ethics Review Committee in her illustrious career. She also made history as the First Female Director of the Institute for Advanced Medical Research and Training (IAMRAT), College of Medicine, University of Ibadan (CoMUI). A trailblazer in research ethics, Professor Falusi, pioneered the introduction of the first Research Guidelines and Ethics Policy at the University of Ibadan. Her efforts aimed to revolutionize research ethics within the University and other tertiary institutions in Nigeria. Embracing a "bench to bedside" philosophy, Professor Falusi led a vibrant team of researchers focusing on translational genomics research in areas such as Sickle Cell Disease, Alpha-Thalassaemia, Breast Cancer, Malaria, and the Ethics of Research. Her findings significantly impacted the genetic architecture of Haemoglobinopathies, influencing research conduct in Nigeria and gaining high citation indices in Google Scholar and Scopus. Professor Falusi established partnerships on a global scale, securing research grants from esteemed organizations such as EDCTP, NEBRA, WHO/Ethics, PABIN, MRC, ICRO/UNESCO, Deutsche Volkswagen-Stiftung, Global Health, Global Blood Therapeutics, and Gilead Sciences, USA. Her outstanding contributions earned her numerous national and international awards, including the L'Oreal-UNESCO (FWIS) Laureate, Fellow Academy of Science (FAS), Fellow, Academy of Medicine Specialties of Nigeria (FAMedS), and the OWSD National Award of Excellence in Science. Beyond her professional endeavours, Professor Falusi is deeply committed to giving back to society. She is the Founder and Trustee of the Sickle Cell Hope Alive Foundation (SCHAF). She offers annual prizes to the Best Graduating Female Science Students at the University of Ibadan, Queens School Ibadan, and secondary schools in Efon Alaaye, Ekiti State. Professor Adeyinka Falusi brings a wealth of knowledge, experience, and passion to her work, making her a revered figure in Haematology and Research Ethics.

MAXWELL M. NWEGBU Lecturer/Consultant, Cheimical Pathologist Maxwell M. Nwegbu is a Professor of Chemical Pathology at the College of Health Sciences, University of Abuja, and a consultant Chemical Pathologist with the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital. He is the current Head of the Department of Chemical Pathology and a past Dean of the Faculty of Basic Clinical Sciences in the College. An alumnus of the College of Medicine, University of Nigeria, he undertook his specialist training at University College Hospital, Ibadan, and received the 2007 Awoonor-Renner prize for best graduating Fellow (Laboratory Medicine), West African College of Physicians. He is a Fellow of the Open Medical Institute, Austrian-American Foundation in Pathology, and Global Health Fellow of the Novartis Institute of Biomedical Research, Cambridge, Massachusetts. Dr Nwegbu is key personnel in the NIH-funded Sickle Pan-African Research Consortium Nigeria Network (SPARC-NEt) grant, the EUROPEAN EDUCATION AND CULTURE EXECUTIVE AGENCY (EACEA) Grant; Project 101082478 — Embedded-AI (ERASMUS-EDU2022-CBHE), and co-investigator on the NIH Sickle Pan Africa Research Consortium TRAINing (SPARC-TRAIN) grant, the International Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB) grant, and the International Hemoglobinopathy Research Network (INHERENT) study (Nigerian site) respectively . He is the laboratory manager at the Centre of Excellence for Sickle Cell Disease Research Training (CESRTA), University of Abuja—a significant site for the American Society of Hematology (ASH) funded Consortium on Newborn Screening in Africa (CONSA) program. He is also a sub-investigator on four ongoing clinical trials in sickle cell disease at CESRTA. He is currently the coordinator of Continuing Medical Education (CME) of the Nigerian Medical Association (North-Central zone).

Prof Babalola has recorded awards, fellowships and many firsts, including being the first female pharmacist to become a Professor and Dean at UI, the first female pharmacist to be inducted into the Academy of Sciences (FAS), and the first female Nigerian to be inducted into the African Academy of Sciences (FAAS), among other fellows. She was selected twice (2016 & 2018) as one of the 10 most influential female scientists in Nigeria. WIMBIZ also selected her as one of the five 2022 Female Academic Achievers in Nigeria. Chinedum is a recipient of the African Union Kwame Nkrumah Regional Prize for Scientific Excellence in 2020, making her an African Union Laureate. As vice Chancellor, Babalola has grown Chrisland University from a population of less than 60 to about 1,500 students, obtained full accreditation for all mature programmes, and established several programmes, including Nursing, Physiotherapy, Medical Lab science, and law. Prof. Bazuaye pioneered the first successful stem cell transplant in sub-Sahara Africa for the cure of sickle cell disease in 2011, the first automated red cell exchange in Nigeria for sickle cell disease in 2014 and the first stem cell transplant for blood cancer (multiple myeloma) in sub-Sahara Africa. He has performed over 21 stem cell transplants to cure patients with sickle cell disease, four multiple myeloma and one aplastic anaemia patient. He has coauthored books, published over 60 research articles, and won several academic and professional awards. He is a distinguished alum award recipient of the University of Benin in Nigeria, a postgraduate examiner at the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria, an external examiner to several medical schools, a reviewer for several local, National and international journals., secretary of African Blood and marrow transplant society (AFBMT), a member representing Africa in the Board of the World Blood and Marrow Transplant Society (WBMT)and Director of the European Blood and Marrow Transplant society(EBMT) for Nigeria. She obtained her nursing and midwifery education in Nigeria. She is an advanced practice registered nurse with board certification in public health nursing. She earned her doctorate in nursing practice with an emphasis in leadership and education. Dr. Odesina has been engaged in nursing and public health practice, working in different capacities for over four decades. She co-founded the Citizens for Quality Sickle Cell Care, Inc., a non-profit organization that served families in Northern Connecticut for over a decade. She is a passionate advocate who has served on many state, regional, and national committees related to genetics, sickle cell, and significant consumer issues. he coordinates medical mission trips to Nigeria and co-established Global Sickle Cell Alliance, Inc. and the sickle cell comprehensive newborn screening and follow-up programs in Oyo, Kaduna, Anambra States, and recently, in Osun State to serve the southwestern States of Oyo, Ogun, and Osun States: coordinates hemoglobinopathy educator and counsellor training programs. She has presented at numerous international conferences, authored several journal publications on sickle cell disease, and received several awards.


Prof. Rufus Akinyemi, winner of the 2023 Gold Medal Prize (Life Sciences) of the Nigerian Academy of Science (NAS), is a Professor of Geriatric Neurology and Translational Neuroscience in the Institute for Advanced Medical Research and Training (IAMRAT), College of Medicine, University of Ibadan, Nigeria. He holds a PhD from Newcastle University, UK, an MSc in Cell Biology and Genetics, a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery from the University of Ibadan, and a National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria fellowship in Internal Medicine and Neurology. He was also recently elected as a fellow of the Nigerian Academy of Science and the Academy of Medicine Specialties of Nigeria. His research focuses on vascular and degenerative brain disorders using a translational bench-bedside-community framework. He leads the IBADAN Brain Bank project, the SIREN Biobank and the African Neurobiobank for Precision Medicine ELSI Project, and he's well-published in peer-reviewed local and international journals. She has collaborated with organizations such as the World Health Organization (WHO), UNICEF, and UNFPA and has conducted training on Public Health in Emergencies for state-level officers in India. Dr Mrs Ajoke Akinola is a seasoned public health professional with over a decade of experience in medical and para-medical roles.


Abayomi Odetunde, a highly experienced Medical Laboratory Scientist (Technologist), has research experience in studies on the genetics of hypertension, Asthma, Household Air Pollution, Sickle Cell and Breast cancer. He also had the privilege of pioneering the first immunohistochemistry laboratory in Sub-Sahara Africa and Nigeria. He has broad training in laboratory sciences and molecular biology techniques; he also attended various training programs at the Department of Parasitology at the University of Heidelberg, the Department of Medicine at the University of Chicago and the Novartis Institute for Biomedical Research, Boston, Massachusetts. His research interest is in translational medicine, particularly in the Genetics of breast cancer and sickle cell disease. He is also involved in extracting high-quality genetic materials (DNA and RNA), which have been used in polymerase chain reactions and, more recently, sequencing. She is a lecturer in the Department of Molecular Biology &amp; Biotechnology, Chrisland University, Abeokuta. She also worked as a research assistant and later as a research fellow at the Genetics and Bioethics Research Unit, IAMRAT, College of Medicine, University of Ibadan. She has a PhD degree in Cellular Parasitology, MSc in Cellular Parasitology, BSc in Microbiology all from the University of Ibadan. Her postgraduate research was on malaria immunology, with the aim of providing critical information for the design of an effective malaria vaccine. She has both local and international training in Molecular Biology and Genetics. She was a postdoctoral fellow at the Department of Medicine, University of Chicago, IL, USA where she worked on sickle cell disease genetics. As a global health fellow at the Novartis Institute for Biomedical Research and Training, Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA, she was involved in the development of novel therapeutics for sickle cell disease employing techniques such as cell culture, CRISPR-Cas9 technology, Next Generation Sequencing and flow cytometry. She is into sickle cell disease genomics and drug discovery. She has a passion to see the scourge of sickle cell disease and malaria mitigated.
