Matthew’s upbringing was conflicted; he grew up in a good home, but he had a broken family. His parents were
divorced, but they were always supportive and pushed him to excel. Middle school was challenging because students
would often pick on him and, being a pacifist, he didn’t really defend himself. He tried hard to avoid these situations and
instead focused on himself and his education.

Matthew didn’t mind traditional high school, however, he felt it was holding him back from opportunities beyond just
his education that he wanted to explore. While attending high school, he aspired to be employed and attend college
simultaneously. Having two siblings who already graduated from Learn4Life, Matthew was familiar with the programs
and services offered, such as the College Dual Enrollment program as well as the flexibility it provided. He knew it would
help him fulfill his goals, so he decided to enroll at Learn4Life in his sophomore year of high school.

At Learn4Life, Matthew was able to get a semester ahead and complete 12 college units. The ability to plan his own
schedule and learn at his own pace allowed him the added freedom to pursue other interests. He joined the Police
Explorers program and was able to work two full-time and two part-time jobs at various times until his graduation.
The Learn4Life program suited him well since he wanted to work and earn money while in school. Matthew
believed it was important for him to pay his own way and to show his parents that he had both the ability
and the willingness to work.

Now a Learn4Life graduate, Matthew works part-time for the city and attends his local community
college. He is proud to help support his family financially and credits the staff at Learn4Life for
allowing him to do so. Matthew plans to pursue a career in law enforcement and eventually
hopes to work for the federal government with the
U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

Nexa Bold was used as inspiration for new Learn4Life logo, but the native font has a sharp, edgy feel to it.
For our logo we created a custom typeface that has a softer feel and rounded corners. We call this typeface ‘LifeType’.
LifeType Bold is compared below with Nexa Bold in the side-by-side comparison, and each corner detail is highlighted at bottom.

Based on statistics alone, it would be easy to dismiss some students as a lost cause. According to Alan, “I was on track to be
in jail… or possibly dead. There wasn’t a future for me after I turned 18.” After getting involved with a gang, Alan’s educational
progress plummeted. He was expelled from two different schools, and his parents were running out of hope that he’d turn his life
around.
“That’s when my mom heard about Learn4Life. She begged me just to try it, so I did.” Little by little, Alan’s teachers and tutors
focused on growing his confidence, and connecting with him on common ground. “My supervising teacher explained that there’s
the dangerous kind of hustling that happens on the street, and then there’s the legal kind of hustling, the sales kind that happens
in corporate boardrooms. That made a lot of sense to me. I realized I could keep the skills I learned on the street, but use them to
have a better life.”
When Alan’s teachers sensed that he was ready to make a change, they supported him as he left the gang. “I thought I could
succeed in school and stay in the gang, but my teachers helped me to see how that would affect my future.” With the negative
influence out of the way, Alan was freed up to think about what he wanted to do with the rest of his life. “Suddenly, I started to
think I can do this. I can make something of my life.”
With a little goal-setting help from his teachers, Alan found the career of his dreams: firefighting. “It’s got all
of the excitement I was craving, but now I can feel proud that I’m making the world better.” Alan graduated
from Learn4Life, received his EMT certification and is currently studying fire technology in college.
In his free time, he volunteers at a rehab center for troubled teens.
