KEY ARTWORKS 1. COPYTIAM CHAIR One of the important early projects for Hans Tan was his response to the brief posed by the Singapore Funiture Industries Council for SingaPlural 2012 to reinterpret a furniture item in any way that the designer saw fit. “For my reinterpretation, I did a drawing of the kopitiam chair instead of doing something to it physically. To me it was important because I found out that the chair was not original to Singapore; it was the copy of the Thonet chair No.14 designed in 19th century Europe,” discloses Tan. By creating a detailed drawing, Tan sought to democratise the idea of the chair, so the drawing could be given to any carpenter for accurate reproduction. ‘This project made it obvious to me that there is a big difference between originality and authenticity. I came to grips that the chair was still very authentically Singaporean, something that made us who we are and gave an atmosphere to our coffee shops and hawker centres.” later this year. “I see myself as a craftsman trying to łäŅùäÚő ġű őäÚĂĢĆńŖäʼn͡Ό says Hans. “In many of my series, you can see my skill getting extremely precise and detailing very intricate, which I may have not been able to do before. The resulting terracotta series, Terraformcotta, translated the abstract forms of the birds from Chen Wen Hsi’s artwork Herons into repeatable patterns applied to a vase using the resist blasting technique. 2. SPOTTED NYONYA SERIES The Spotted Nyonya collection launched by Hans Tan Studio in 2011 reinterpreted the traditional domestic wares attributed to the Peranakan Chinese of Southeast Asia by taking on a contemporary approach by applying dotted patterns to the surfaces of the wares using the resist blasting technique. The first collection, a winner of the President*s Design Award Design of the Year 2012, comprised five items: a candleholder, a container without lid, big and small containers with lids and a platter and subtly examined the story of arts and a notion of identity as it related to Singaporeans and people who live in Singapore. 3. R FOR REPAIR Originally debuting at the National Design Centre in January 2021, Hans Tan Studio-initiated R for Repair exhibition explored how creative repair could preserve meaning and breathe new life into people’s possessions. As part of the design process, Hans and his team arranged conversations between commissioned designers and owners of the donated objects to create meaningful reinterpretations of stories behind the items. “I wanted to work with a notion that when you repair something creatively and with ingenuity of materials, you can come up with something that is much better than its original state,” he explains. After the success of the first exhibition, DesignSingapore Council and Hans Tan collaborated again on the second edition at the V&A Museum in London. Launching a dynamic design exchange between the United Kingdom and Singapore, the exhibition featured a set of 10 new commissions as well as three objects from the inaugural edition of the exhibition. 1 3 2 text OLHA ROMANIUK photos ZUKETA FILM PRODUCTION photo STUDIOWONGS 49

PEOPLE STRENGTH IN SOFTNESS Marcus Wong, Business Development Director of local custom furniture and upholstery specialist Danovel, on the evolution of soft furnishing in Singapore and reasons to opt for custom-made furniture. DÁĢĩŪäě ūÁʼn ƈŅʼnő established in the 1960s by Marcus’ grandfather, Koh Kee Khim, who founded Hock Hin Furniture Company and started producing sofas for local homeowners. Back then, the store was located at Jalan Nanas (Sims Ave, presently located opposite Eunos MRT), in a rented zinc-roofed kampong house. According to Marcus, over the years the company has gone above and beyond to meet the changing needs of its customers, as a uniquely custom-made furniture manufacturer. “We are proud to say that we have been awarded the Made With Passion Singapore mark by the Singapore Tourism Board, recognising our commitment to delivering high-quality products and services. We go all out to source quality and custom materials for our ÚŖʼnőĩġäŅʼn ūĂĩ ĂÁŪä ʼnłäÚĆƈÚ requests,” he points out, “For instance, some of them have requested for Swarovski crystals, or completely organic materials, such as raw cotton or linen fabrics, and we take őĂä őĆġä ÁĢà äƅĩŅő őĩ ġääő őĂäĆŅ ʼnłäÚĆƈÚ Ģääàʼn͠Ό DO YOU SEE AN INCREASE IN THE NUMBER OF HOMEOWNERS ASKING FOR CUSTOM UPHOLSTERED FURNITURE IN SINGAPORE? Yes, we do. While there is a lot of ready-made furniture in the market, we see that customers are looking for more personalised, bespoke furniture nowadays. They come to us with their unique expectations and design requirements, which cannot Ùä ùŖěƈěěäà Ùű ŅäÁàűͿġÁàä ÁĢà mass market furniture. HOW HAS THE INDUSTRY EVOLVED OVER THE LAST TWO DECADES? Initially, we saw mostly expatriates who showed appreciation for such custommade furniture and sofa upholstery. WHAT ARE SOME OF THE MOST POPULAR HOME FABRICS RIGHT NOW, AND WHY ARE THEY TRENDING? Aquaclean fabric is one of the most popular fabrics right now. It is pet-friendly, which means it can withstand scratches, and is more durable in terms of the performance of the fabric. Those with young children or pets and want to avoid stains, it can be easily washed away with just clear water. So, it’s very easy to maintain. The fabric has antibacterial properties as well, which was timely during Covid-19. We get two or three requests for such fabrics every week. AT WHICH STAGE OF THEIR HOME-BUILDING JOURNEY SHOULD HOMEOWNERS CONSIDER DANOVEL’S SERVICES? I would suggest that they start as early as possible (i.e. at the ideation and planning stage) 1 1 50

At our showroom, it would typically take at least two hours for the customer to discuss with our interior designers and select a fabric of their choice. Armani/Casa Corso Venezia was recently outfitted for Salone del Mobile 2023 in never before seen striking red, indigo, green, and petrol green, sighted through the brand’s signature glass windows. The play of bold colours and combination of materials projected the aura of a mysterious garden. They “float.” There is weight in every design. In the brand’s latest collection, visual and material lightness is emphasised by minimal thickness and lightweight structures. A homage to artisanal craft, materials and manufacturing techniques. Armani/Casa pulled off a bold and seamless combination of two materials: the warmth of solid American Walnut and the cool transparency of Plexiglass in the Net Coffee Table. Designed a year after Cassina was founded, the LC2 Poltrona armchair by Le Corbosier, Pierre Jeanneret, and Charlotte Perriand (1928) was exhibited at the Salon d’Automne in Paris in the year 1929 and was only produced exclusively in 1965. Patricia Urquiola’s Husk armchair (2011) features a supporting shell made of Hirek®, while its interior consists of soft and enveloping cushions. “Those who look at a sofa must visually perceive a sense of both mental and physical comfort,” The designer says. The Grande Papilio armchair by Naoto Fukusawa (2009) features a backrest resembling a pair of butterfly wings, and comes with an ottoman. 63 photos SPACE FURNITURE

In 1947, Aldo Bai, Pio Reggiani, Aldo Barassi, and architect Marco Zanuso conducted experiments and researched with foam rubber and elastic tapes. Arflex was only formally introduced in 1951 at the IX Triennale in Milan. This Italian brand has not only produced several iconic pieces like the Lady armchair, but has also dealt in the creation of car seats for Fiat. ARFLEX Cini Boeri’s Pecorelle chairs (1972) are preceded by the Strips chair (1968). The result: a new “Strips” that resembled sheep with thin black legs. The Pecorelle chairs comprise an armchair and a small sofa. The architect was inspired by the works of Christo Vladimirov Javasev and Jeanne-Claude Denat de Guillebon, both masters in landscape painting. 64

photo SPACE FURNITURE The Fiorenza armchair by Franco Albini (1952) was once used to promote the potential of foam rubber, an advanced material at the time. It has been used for upholstered furniture in a 50’s Pirelli advertisement. THE DESIRE TO DESIGN EACH PIECE TO PERFECTION HAS BEEN PASSED DOWN FROM ONE GENERATION TO ANOTHER. 65

The materials used in the latest addition to the Armani Casa Exclusive Textiles by Rubelli collection include wool, hand-woven cashmere, silk, and even raw silk with raised weave. Expect gorgeous throws, rugs, and upholsteries in varied designs including jacquard with floral and geometric motifs. The colour scheme ranges from neutral to vivid colour shades, a result of dense colours with a silky and iridescent effect. NOTABLE ICONIC DESIGNS The Logo lamp (1982) was designed before Armani/ Casa was officially launched in 2000. It is the first product that Giorgio Armani designed specifically for the home. In celebration of their 35th anniversary in 2017, the brand launched a new limited edition version of the lamp. There are only fifty of the CLUB bar cabinets in Ocean Lacquer (2016) worldwide, all numbered and signed. The lacquer was inspired by The Great Wave off Kanagawa (1830-1831), an iconic a wood-block print by artist Hokusai. It takes two artisans 92 hours to complete the Ocean lacquer finishing. This design is also available in Black Straw Marquetry. SOFT FURNISHINGS Bring art to the table with the Naike chopstick set in ebony, and a puzzle, Nardo. Every small object and decorative piece at Armani/Casa narrates a story. Ăä `ŖŅÁĢĩ úěÁʼnʼn łĆäÚäʼn ùĩŅ ĩĢä͡ ŅäƉäÚő culture and artisanal skills. Each piece bears the Armani/Casa Murano logo, with the year of its make engraved under the glass. Poetic Objects Two-toned decorative lanterns like Notte feature unique indigo and red lines. 66

After scouring over 20 furniture shops and trying out more than 100 chairs, he finally settled on these HC28 Cosmo Nao dining chairs from Made and Make. OPPOSITE The display shelves outside the kitchen are Jeremy’s favourite element within the home. He loves the way the shelf lights interact with the adjacent wall and the decorative wall light adds a touch of flair. 75

Built-in shelves beside the bed provide a space for Jeremy to display his personal keepsakes and lend a personal touch to the room. Blackout curtains were a priority for him. Besides blocking out external light for a restful sleep, the curtains also add to the formality and sophistication of the space.
