angwoman is the English translation
to the novel “Aarachar” written by K. R
Meera. I read this novel last year and
was simply astound by the narration. The
author gave a ‘life’ to this novel through
the smell and sound of Calcutta and obviously by
portraying the Bengali background as well. The
story brings the first hangwoman into limelight and
describes the complex life situations of the protag-
onist. Though I have read many female oriented
novels, the way this lead character showcase her-
self is what makes it the best novel I have ever read.
The story reveals how the 22 year old Chetna, from
the scion of Grddha Mullick clan, free herself from
her predominant father and get herself out from the
manipulated web created by the man she loves the
desires and loves the most. The Grddha family has
a culture and profession of executioner as strong
lineage. But she was not willing to be a hangwoman, that too for the first time in the
history. She was tossed into frenzied media, in the thick of which she watches the loss of
her brother and other family tragedies, confused in her ability to condemn a man.
Yes, the story is based on the dark side of society and
the question on capital punishment would still linger
around our mind, but the beauty of the story lies in the
clear cut elegance showed in narration of the elements
of death. Reaching the last page, we will be shocked
but not grisly.
I would give “Hangwoman” a 4.7 rating out of 5. If you
are willing to travel through “the road not taken” grab
the book.
